It’s a double edge sword, it’s symmetrical other than the cant on the pommel, all one has to do is rotate it and it can be held in either left or right hand

A sword was usually the weapon of chieftains and elite warriors. Recognizable figures among their clans. Even large-scale battles outside of warband skirmishes, they might have not needed shields to identify themselves, along with their swords and armor making them stand out. You could also wear a hauberk over a linen shirt and a tunic with embroidery signifying your faction over the hauberk, not too dissimilar to knights in surcoats.
Going without shields also gives you a lot more freedom of movement. And the more freedom and room a sword has, the more dangerous they are.
