It’s a double edge sword, it’s symmetrical other than the cant on the pommel, all one has to do is rotate it and it can be held in either left or right hand

A sword was usually the weapon of chieftains and elite warriors. Recognizable figures among their clans. Even large-scale battles outside of warband skirmishes, they might have not needed shields to identify themselves, along with their swords and armor making them stand out. You could also wear a hauberk over a linen shirt and a tunic with embroidery signifying your faction over the hauberk, not too dissimilar to knights in surcoats. Going without shields also gives you a lot more freedom of movement. And the more freedom and room a sword has, the more dangerous they are.

I love how your technique is basically the "irish bat'leh" technique, which I appreciate. The beauty being where every defensive posture is also potentially an offensive strike, and visa-versa. Of course this is true of most effective stick-type weapons. Much easier walking around with a shillelagh than a Bat'leh in public though haha, and way more useful when not employed defensively, as a 6'4" irishman with bad knees.

4:56 my understanding is that complex hilted swords are after the hey day of the buckler because the fully enclosed swords (like your Cromwell back sword) essentially did much of the hand protection your buckler did for you.

At 7:17 you could use the feral end on the way back up to shield and elbow strike using the knob, then open the are for a second fast strike with the center of the stick.

Kind of a shame it requires a buckle for readjustment. Maybe an adapted version of the slip strap that backpacks use for adjusting their arm holds could work towards streamlining adjustments in battle. Could use a small metal lever tool to assist with pulling the strap through the lock if need be, as well. The only downside would be having to source a leather strap long enough for it to work, and having to source the strap's lock as well, but I feel it may be worth testing.
