add some iron shod(or something to cap it) on one or both ends and the concussive force goes up (assuming you have the strength to use it) speed and agility goes down so not as effective with the sword( unless you have the explosive strength to counter that). Make it pointy or attach something cutty or stabby to it and now you have a spear or pole-arm of some sort, Much better for battle lines in melee formations (not so much for strolling around the street or hills).
We do quite a lot of sparring with the quarterstaff, and its lots of fun.
