This gentleman explains very clearly one of the facets of this camera. This camera is one that offers so many features that unless one has some familiarity with photographic principles, the learning curve can be quite steep. Even with some familiarity with things like ISO, shutter speed, f-stops and exposure values, the learning curve can still be daunting. However, this being said, the camera is an excellent one, and this presentation is very good. In my humble opinion, the best thing to do is to read as much of the manual as one can, and to see as many videos about this camera as possible until one acquires the necessary familiarity with the way it works. There is also the problem of being able to recall all the many features the camera offers. Again, this camera is excellent for what it can do. It can give the photographer more or less control over the photograph one wants to make. Many thanks to this gentleman for sharing his knowledge and expertise in such a clear and concise manner.
I am feeling overwhelmed. Just bought this camera. Collecting it tomorrow. I might return it unopened. It seems too complicated for me. It seems to be a great one but too many functions for me.
I had a Nikon DSLR and i switch to this camera because it's light and compact, perfect for my hiking trips. But boy was i lost! So different from a Nikon. Thank you so much! Your video help me a lot
This was the best review I’ve seen on the RX model three. You did skip over several settings because you do not use them. I would like a follow up where you went into more detail about the items you skipped. Overall a great and helpful tool. Thanks
7 dislikes? Seriously? Some people are just grumpy and mean. I just purchased a Sony RX100M3 and I really enjoyed your clear and concise walk through the menu. I'm typically an avid reader, so I had checked the manual first. The manual is terribly inadequate. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge with us! God Bless.
I just got the Sony RX100M4, and although it is a different version o the camera, I found this setup run through very helpful in learning the Sony way of thinking.. Thanks
Really helpful guide thanks- One note I think the eyepiece sensor does automatically turn off the monitor screen when you put your eye to it or even set your finger up to it to save power.
Hi David Keets. That's correct, but I don't walk around with the camera to my face all the time :) Would be nice to be covert and save batteries without having the camera to my face and always switching power to the back LCD.
***** True that- I decided to go with it none-the-less. I'll be mostly using it for Vlogging and Reviews so I think it will be great. Now to learn how to edit hahaha
Thank you! I'm have been considering selling my 8-month old Canon Rebel T3i and just using the Sony exclusively--this video all but seals the deal. The Canon is just too bulky for a walk-around camera, and, more importantly, too complicated for my meager ability. I'm just a girl who loves taking pictures of family and scenery but who doesn't want to sacrifice superb image quality that is typical with a "point and shoot". I have had this Sony for about 3 hours and am so impressed by the user friendliness! Your video has some great suggestions that I certainly couldn't have pulled from the Sony online help guide. Love the idea of being able to use memory recall! Vacationing in California and Canada later this year and can't wait to use this little (and I do mean little!) gem!
Thanks so much for this quick video filled with tidbits. I just bought this camera and I've been a Canon girl from day one, so it's been an uphill learning experience but this is putting me on the right path. Warm regards & God Bless!
Thanks for a great overview! So many things I would have had to try to dig up, and/or would never have thought to look up. Seriously, with so many terrible "tutorials" and "tips" vids out there, this is straight to the point and very helpful. Thank you!
Hi Dave. Turn the monitor off This is possible. Go to settings. 2nd menu page 3 Goto FINDER/MONITOR chose viewfinder instead of the default auto. This will make the monitor off when the view finder is up regardless of whether or not your eye is up to the view finder.
This is a really excellent tutorial! Just got this camera and I've been looking through tutorials and yours is the best I've found! Thank you! You're a good teacher. Subscribed. :)
Thank you, Dave, for all the tips! I don't have a RX100 (but now thinking to have one!) but Sony a5100 - I still find this tutorial very useful. The Sony's menu interface, it seems, have a terrible reputation by many camera reviewers; however, few seriously get into the menu system and explains it to novices like myself.
Glad to be of help +Hideki Gomi ! Yes: deep but so customizable. Still loving my RX100M3 and continue to recommend it :) If you do take the plunge, please use my links in the comments or blog. Thanks and happy shooting!
This vid has taught me so much. Thankyou!👍👌. Love my Miii. Mainly do astrophotography, timelapse and moving objects in focus with blurred background. I put them up on my RUclips channel. Many many thanks from the UK
very helpful, thanks I got mine yesterday. I had money for m4 though but, 50mbps xvac s is more than sharp and colorful, even on my beamer, 2 to 3 meters projection.
I was dismayed by the JPEG image quality compared to my RX100M2, then found out that the smudgey images were thanks to the Long Exposure NR setting. Set that to 'off' and things improved immediately. Just sharing for the benefit of anybody else experiencing that.
Dear Dave Cheung, thank you very much for posting this very helpful video. I have just purchased a second hand 'as new' RX100 Mk III and implemented all your settings. Resulting in some pretty wonderful pictures, thank you! What I am struggling with is how to implement the Memory Recall settings i.e. how to fix them as 1, 2 and 3. No doubt time eludes you but, if by miracle you find time, please can you do a short video on achieving precisely that task. Thank you in advance, kind regards, Han.
Have you noticed a slight inaccuracy in metered manual mode. When exposure is set at M.M0 (correct exposure) it can take 2/3rds of a stop (either direction) before it registers either a + or - 0.3 shift (depending which side of + or - run-up to 0). There should only be a 1/3rd stop shift.
+Toll Bar In-Cam Metering is a dark art and I don't trust it much. For critical work, RAW is best, but for personal snaps, I'm ok with Medium JPEGS and chimping the screen after a shot to be sure I've got the exposure I want.
Dave, thank you for your post..but, we have a dedicated button to change the exposure compensation...right..?..so we do not need to program that function on the control ring..right..?
Hi Dave, Very good video of explaining the set up on the Sony RXM3..I have just purchased one and am setting it up.. I do 90% video and underwater..So I will be trying to set the camera up accordingly.... Do you have any suggestions on this? Also how do you add an item mode to your function menu for example steady shot video?
silenthunterpty I'm not familiar with the underwater casing and how it affects the controls of the RX100M3 so can't give meaningful feedback. For the Function Menu: check under the Cog > 4 > "Function Menu Set."
Tip regarding saving battery life: If you set the viewfinder setting to viewfinder (instead of auto), the display will be completely turned off when the viewfinder is up (but otherwise active). You won't be needing the pseudo-deactivate button as suggested in the video.
Very good review Dave. It really helps. The thing I am really missing comparing to RX100M2 is to turn of the GUI of the Control Ring. I hope Sony will fix this in the firmware.
Thanks +Alkesh Mistry ! Have longer write-up and sample images (Straight out of camera and edited) plus raw video footage in the link in the comment. Cheers!
Thanks for an informative and entertaining set of three videos on the RX100 Mk iii. I wonder if you can help me. I noticed you use the front ring for exposure compensation and I'm eager to find out whether exposure compensation works in movie mode. I've searched everywhere and even called Sony today but nobody seemed to know what I was talking about! Looking at the Instruction pdf, I'm pretty sure it does - but maybe you can tell me
Thanks for the kind words Andy Nickless . Yes: the exposure compensation front ring works fine in movie mode. It does, however, limit you to 2 stops under/over.
***** Thanks Dave. Would you believe when I called Sony the guy went to ask his "superior" and when he came back, reported that the camera has no exposure compensation facility in Movie Mode! Despite this, I was so sure it did have, I ordered the RX100 Mk iii and it arrived yesterday. I have to say, I'm stunned by the quality of images you can get from this tiny camera. Thanks again for your help.
So yeah I bought it and thanks followed along to set it up- great. Sorry to be such a newb but I'm having trouble setting up the MR presets- little helps please?
Thank you, I wanted to ask you please let me know how to unlock the rocket dial ring we used for ISO on right and left for Focus and downside for exposure and upper side for screen function when I trying to use for shutter speed to move clock or anti clock it is locked. please help me out. regards
6:25 Hi Dave! I'm new to cameras and I was just wondering how to easily get my AVCHD video onto a Mac? I can't find the link you mentioned and I accidentally recorded a few videos on that format! Thanks!
Great info! Just what I was looking for! You mentioned a software for converting avchd, I browsed your blog, but I couldn't find it. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks!
Thanks miiikkkeeee ! Oops ... Forgot about that one!! The video rewrapper I use and love is Called ClipWrap and available on the iTunes store here: itunes.apple.com/ca/app/clipwrap/id553085183?mt=12 Much faster than a converter and can convert when needed too.
5:15 It's not weird, don't talk this feature down. You can also specify a specific ISO for Mult Noise Reduction when going right in this menu and it will take 4 images and process them together to get a stunning result with less noise. This is a killer feature in low light photography when you need to pick a higher ISO. Actually I use Mult NR anytime when I don't need continuous shutter (many images), because the result is so much better than using regular ISO (unless I am in dynamic conditions where I benefit from better exposure range through Auto HDR Exposure Differences). I never have to modify my preferred drive mode, unless I need the timer, since those features requires single shutter mode and it will jump back to my preferred continuous shutter when I disable any of those again. Mult NR is just not so nice for battery life or when you want to take a lot of pictures in a short time, but it's certainly an upgrade to the image quality.
I have a Mac and switched over to the XAVC S file format for videos on my camera, and none of my videos show up on iPhoto or FCPX.. you recommended XAVC S for mac users in this video, but did you mean to recommended AVCHD? I even tried downloading a plug-in for my videos to show up but no luck. Very frustrating.
Dave, I can't get the Exposure Compensation to work on the Control Ring in the 2 Auto Modes & any of the Scene Modes. It will only work in the "A", "P", "S" & "M"' modes. What am I doing wrong?
+Foo Richard Too big a question that doesn't have a one-answer-fits-all. But start by exploring how to read a histogram so you can tell where your shadows, midtones and highlights reside.
Is there a way to turn on the camera without the lens extending/opening? You refer to "shoot mode" as if you have the camera on but choose when you want the lens to open. Also in my Record setting menu for video my choices are 50i 24m, 50i 17m, 50p 28m, 25p 24m and 25p 17m. In your video yours are 60p. Why would this be? I did a firmware upgrade check and it seemed my version 1.10 is up to date. Thanks for the tutorial. Really helpful.
Re: on without lens extension. Yes: if camera is off, press the play button until camera LCD turns on (lens will not extend). Re: video frame rates. It's country specific. I'm in Canada so wherever in the world you are, or wherever you purchased your camera from, has different "standard" frame rates. Hope this helps and happy shooting!
***** That is great. Thanks. I could not find it anywhere although I am sure it is in the manual. Re frame rates - I am in the UK so guess it is 50 here. Thanks again
Oh I found it! Someone posted about this but I haven't tried it yet. "You have to be recording in the XAVC S codec (under file format at the bottom of the first menu) to get the higher frame rates. You need to have an SDXC card to record in that format, otherwise you can only record in AVCHD which will not record in the higher frame rates. Also, if you are in PAL mode, your high frame rate will be 100fps, if you are in NTSC it will be 120fps. The only downside is that when I turn the camera on, I get an annoying message reminding me I'm in NTSC mode. I guess the camera knows I'm in a PAL region based on the date/time zone settings. You also can't switch NTSC/PAL modes without formatting your memory card."
Thanks Dave, Well maybe there is one thing you can help me out with..I was using the camera for the first time this week end..and shot many videos in XAVC format. Now that I try to extract them on my PC It will not show the video. Only in MP4 that I did not set. also I did not set dual video either. I rechecked my camera menu and it is set for Program Auto and at XAVC format. Is there a converter or firmware for this? Thanks for our help.
silenthunterpty Check your SD card: you need to use SDXC cards (I have recommendations for compatible cards here: notsoancientchinesesecrets.com/sony-rx100m3-review-best-point-shoot-camera/ ) to record XAVC format.
+RMSFAM09 itunes.apple.com/ca/app/clipwrap/id553085183?mt=12 ... at the end of this video at the top of the screen he pops up a link to the blog ... the app however is $50 ... looking for a free solution myself
Is there a possible way to hide the bottom icons? Using this as a webcam the icons kind of get in the way with wanting to not display them for the viewers.
Hi Dave, I have just purchased this camera, mainly to use at large arena concerts. What would be the best settings to use? Or maybe just Auto mode? Thanks.
Hi Dave! Can you please help me to get the right settings to film in the dark, mostly fireworks!? I was told this camera would be great for that but all I film turns out to be crap compared to other videos with fireworks. Doesnt matter if they use phones, GoPros or other cameras, it´s always a lot better quality than I get. Sorry for my bad english.
Hi there! I’m extremely curious about the part where you mentioned you are able to convert the AVCHD files into something that will work better on Mac? I wasn’t able to find that on your website so I was just curious if you could point me in the right direction for that information? Thanks!
Your video on Recommended Settings and Tips was a great help in navigating the RX100M3 menus and settings. I set most settings as you suggest, and that has helped me get comfortable with the camera pretty quickly. However, I'm confused regarding your recommended video settings. You say that the XAVC S plays well with Mac, but that raises some issues: 1) I currently have a Sony HD TV (not 4K)- so my understanding is that I currently have no way show all the resolution that XAVC S offers. 2) If I were to acquire a 4K TV, would I need Final Cut Pro or some other professional level Mac program to edit XAVC S files? 3) Before buying the RX100M3, I would load AVCHD videos from my SD card into Aperture, iPhoto or iMovie and then edit them in iMovie for display on my HD TV via AppleTV (2nd Gen.). Am I correct in thinking that to continue working that way I should be recording video in AVCHD on the RX100M3? 4) If I use AVCHD, what's the best Record Setting that's also usable by iMovie? 5) Any thoughts on if or when Mac iLife software will be able to handle XAVC S? Is it continent on wide acceptance of 4K TV? Finally, you mention a piece of software for translating AVCHD to something more compatible with iMovie, etc. I wasn't able to find what that software was.
Thanks Ken Schroll for the kind words. Will answer what I know. 1-2) XAVC S Codec and your TV. The codec is NOT 4K; it's still only 1920x1080. The XAVC just allows more MB/second, which requires less compression of the signal than the other codecs. 3-5) ACHD and iMovie. I'm not an iMovie user or developer so can't answer these in a meaningful way. Re: Software. I added the link to ClipWrap on the blog here: notsoancientchinesesecrets.com/sony-rx100m3-review-best-point-shoot-camera/ Hope this helps and happy shooting :)
***** Your response on the XAVC S Codec surprised me, so I did a Google search and found many references to the fact that XAVC S is in fact 4K. Here's an excerpt from a 2013 Sony press release: “XAVC S” profile- Resolution: 4K (3840 x 2160), HD, and Proxy Compression: MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 Wrapping format: MP4 Audio: Linear PCM and AAC Looking further, I found that Apple's App store has an app called iXAVC ($34.99), which can convert XAVC S to Apple Intermediate Codec MOV format, which can then be handled directly by iMovie. The highest resolution iMovie output will be 1920x1080. I'm not sure if the iMovie output will reflect the 60P50M quality of the XAVC S format. I used the trial version of ClipWrap on several different AVCHD files from the RX100M3, and it worked flawlessly. Thanks for that recommendation!
Ken Schroll Glad you found ClipWrap useful. Re: XAVC S. Pretty sure RX100M3 can't do 4K (or they'd be selling a looooot more of them). And checked the wiki on it and it says it can support "up to" 4K resolution. Check the specs and you'll likely find RX100M3 has the higher bitrate but lower HD spec. Cheers!
***** Dave- you are correct, as usual! The Sony web site says the RX100M3 can do "50Mbps Full HD (1920x1080) 60p high quality video". This is apparently is one of the "versions" of XAVC S, which supports up to 3840X2160 HD.
Hey, could you post an update on how you are liking the experience with the M3? I have a 600D, had a 6D (sold it) because it was to cumbersome to carry. I'm not a pro, just an advanced amateur and I'm searching for a pocketable/small non-interchangable camera to take photos on outings/trips. AFAIK the RX100M3 is the only choice right now and I'm trying to research it as much as possible. Thanks!
Hi Marcin Bauer. Still loving it and even had it strapped on taking the kiddos to school today. It's no DSLR replacement, but the fast focus, great files even in low-light and small body make it my favourite take-anywhere cam. I sometimes wish there were a longer zoom range, but really, that would be asking a lot, and I like their decision to include a 1.8 vs longer zoom. Hope this helps and please use my links if you decide to make a purchase :)
Dave: I am trying to download the Time-Lapse fromn the Sonyentairtainment website, but somehow my region(Israel) is not included in the download. Do you know of any other Time-lapse program that can be downloaded for the RX100M3 ? I am also using Canon P&S cameras and use the Time-lapse via the CHDK SW. I'll Appriciate your asitance.
Absolutely super video ... great information packed in at a "near-perfect" pace. Kudos to you. How would you rate the RX100m3 v/s the Panasonic LX-100? I'm about to make a purchase & am on the fence between these two.
Thanks for the kind words Prakash Wadhwani ! I have no experience with the LX-100 so cannot give you a meaningful comparison. However, I've just returned from travels in Europe and the RX100M3 performed beyond expectation in every way (with the sole exception of battery life!). I'm planning on adding images from our trip (JPEG B+W FTW!) to our full write up soon. You'll be able to find it here: notsoancientchinesesecrets.com/sony-rx100m3-review-best-point-shoot-camera/ Merry Christmas and happy shooting :)
David Great review, lots of camera not so much talking heads, must be an actual secret given the huge number of talking head camera guys. I also just picked up the DX100M3, a week before the M4 announcement. Just one question, on the MR setting I can see the 3 different memory settings. On my camera they are all the same. I can't seem to get into the settings on each page and change the settings. I have the 1.2 firmware. Any hints or better yet, another video on how to change the settings and maybe some choices like black and white, etc.? Cheers
Thanks Richard Demaray . Re: Memory Recall locations. Goto Menu > Camera > Memory to SET your Memory Recall settings. To recall them, goto Menu > Camera > Memory recall. Hope this helps.
Hi, great video! I have just a short question: at 7:16, when you talk about record settings, the options says 60i, but on my camera it says 50i. Does that have to do with the memory card I use? What card do you use on your camera? Thanks /Jan
Thanks for watching Jan Karlsson! Re: 50i vs 60i. Likely just the country from which you purchased. I'm in North America and 60i is standard here. Europe and elsewhere is commonly 50i. Hope this helps.
Thanks +Jan Karlsson! Re: 50i vs 60i Don't worry: it's just a regional difference. In north america we have 60i and in Europe and other areas the standard is 50i. Cheers and happy shooting!
Terrific video but need - Help (anyone). Why is the Auto Flash setting grayed out and not available regardless which shooting mode I choose on my RX100M III? How does one make the Auto Flash available and in doing so, does this mean that under low light situations, would the built-in flash "automatically" pop up? Cannot understand why the "Auto Flash" (as well as the "Flash Off" options are always grayed out and not available. Any help wold be appreciated.
So I got this camera as of recently and recorded a video in XAVC S format, but when I connect it to my mac pro via usb it will try and import it as mp4. Even if I just go to finder and look at the file it says MP4. Why is that? Is it because I'm not connecting the SD card directly? This makes no sense to me.
where do i go exactly for iMovie to read my avchd videos? can't find the "blog" you refer to ... same question as RMSFAM09 below ... would love to have this answered!
Hi there, Very good videos on this great little camera, thanks. I'm just wondering... having the exposure compensation on the control ring is interesting, but isn't the EC merely another way of adjusting the ISO or am I missing something?
+Paul Corcoran Not always just ISO. The camera can manipulate any one of 3 options (depending on shoot mode): ISO, Shutter or Aperture. For example, in shutter-priority mode, it will change either the Aperture OR ISO to accommodate your exposure compensation needs.
Is this camera still relevant in 2024? Sorry for asking dumb question. This is the only camera i have and i want to use it in Japan. Thanks for sharing this tips and tricks.
im curious are you using Auto or M when set for these changes? and how do you change aperture in manual if you change the ring function? this is a great video btw thank you for it.
Alejandro Garcia When the ring function is changes, you toggle between shutter and aperture by pressing down on the 4-way rocker. THanks for the kind words and happy shooting :)
Hi there, I thought I need some piece of advice here. I own sony rx100iii and tried to understand how AF works and how to control AF. I realize they have two kind of AF, first is a few green box [ ] and second is green frame line - - -, Can we control this? And I also have difficulties doing selfies with monopod, before taking photos, I have to click the shutter, and it will start lock on focus, and when I raise up the monopod, of course it would focus on something else, how do I overcome this. Lastly, what is the tips to take group selfies (we-fie), as the camera will focus on me, and my friend surround get slightly de-autofocus (not sharp). Thanks in advance- Sam
Hi Sam Raymi ! Re: AF squares. The small AF squares show up when using the OPTICAL zoom range. Strangely, even when Settings > Zoom Setting is set to "Optical Zoom Only" the camera allows you to zoom past optical range to 1.4x digital zoom :( Once the lens zooms past 70mm you will be unable to set the focus point. Baaaad Sony. Re: Selfie-focus. I've found this too: strangely Sony requires the focus-lock to be achieved at time of shutter press and not after the timer is up. Strike 2 for Sony! Re: Group Focus Tip. This one I can help with :) Selecting a smaller Aperture (i.e. Larger Aperture number, like f8) will keep more of your friends in focus! Hope this helps!
hi, from your video, u cna set it to 60i 24M(fx), may i noe what memory card u r using? i am using the sandisk extreme pro 64gb.U3, C10 SDXC 4K ultra HD, but my record setting can only go up to 50i. pls advise
Having now configured my camera to his liking; I want to know how to revert to default settings with everything automated because I am not going to remember any of this.
I found the factory reset. Thank you. The camera takes good enough photos in its default configuration. Customization is for people who know what they are doing or are willing to learn.
hi ***** , thanks for the great review. I was wondering if you have plans to put the RX100M3 VS Fuji X100S (T). I am in the market for a new camera. And man am I confused. Do I get the sony or save up more for the fuji. I know they are two different beasts. I usually find my shots in the 24-35 mm range. it would be awesome if u could help out. Thanks once again, and keep up the great work.
+David Co Robles III Can't be sure since I don't know the exact settings of your camera and shooting situation, but likely because the camera meter thinks there is not enough light?
+Teresa Chueh the first thing he teaches you to change is the control ring to control exposure compensation. You can change it back to change iso if you like
Yes, but I did exactly what the video said about the control exposure using the ring but like when i go to take a picture and i move the ring it doesn't do anything :(
Hello, Please i need to buy a camera that can give me great and high quality photos for my work like finishing, decorating and some materials, also to use it for my personal traveling, my budget about 800 usd , so what camera i should to buy and what lens , thank you
Hi Ibrahim Nabil. Really there's no "right" answer, but your budget will limit your choices for sure. Many cameras are capable of producing amazing results, but you must know how to get the most from them. Also, depending on your finishing/decorating work you want to capture, selection of lenses will matter: the less distortion the better. A good place to start would be checking out theWirecutter's excellent articles of cameras here :thewirecutter.com/?s=camera Hope this helps!
This is exactly what youtube should be about. Some pro explaining in a semi simple way how to do .-) Hats of for you sir
Thank you Jon! 🙏
A very clear and informative post, Dave. Many thanks. I do believe this will be my next camera.
Thanks
Finally a video that show some practical feature of this camera, thanks for sharing!
Very welcome Massimiliano Ferrari and thanks for watching!! (Cool name btw :))
7 dislikes?
God Bless.
Thanks Michael Preyer and God bless you back!! :)
Now I will give 58 :) Have a nice day bitches
I just got the Sony RX100M4, and although it is a different version o the camera, I found this setup run through very helpful in learning the Sony way of thinking.. Thanks
Glad to hear it +Heath Hurwitz ! It's a wonderful cam series and glad you found this video relevant :) Happy shooting!
Thanks for this video. Original settings really bugging me until I saw this and learnt how to change the presets.
+Hannah Netting glad to hear it! Thanks for watching and happy shooting :)

True that- I decided to go with it none-the-less.
Vacationing in California and Canada later this year and can't wait to use this little (and I do mean little!) gem!
jnktews you're very welcome :) happy travels and shooting!!
Thanks so much for this quick video filled with tidbits. I just bought this camera and I've been a Canon girl from day one, so it's been an uphill learning experience but this is putting me on the right path.
Warm regards & God Bless!
Thanks for the kind words ***** and God Bless you too!!
Just picked up a used RX100 mk3, your video helped a lot, thanks!
Congrats on the RX100m3! Awesome little camera . Happy snapping!
Thanks for a great overview! So many things I would have had to try to dig up, and/or would never have thought to look up. Seriously, with so many terrible "tutorials" and "tips" vids out there, this is straight to the point and very helpful. Thank you!
where do I find the blog post you mention at 6:29? could you share a link?
In the description of this video :)
Liked it. Some nice setting suggestions. I enjoy the information you impart in your videos, keep them coming. I will subscribe.
Hi Dave. Turn the monitor off
This is possible.
Go to settings. 2nd menu page 3
Goto FINDER/MONITOR
chose viewfinder instead of the default auto.
This will make the monitor off when the view finder is up regardless of whether or not your eye is up to the view finder.
This is a really excellent tutorial! Just got this camera and I've been looking through tutorials and yours is the best I've found! Thank you! You're a good teacher. Subscribed. :)
thanks for watching and the kind words violadude ! Happy shooting and thanks for subscribing :)
Hi there! thanks for this walk through, I just got an M3 and this has been extremely helpful!
Glad to hear it +Stephen Hogan (施賀鈞) ! Happy shooting and hope you enjoy this great little camera :)
very helpful, thanks
I got mine yesterday.
Thanks for the tip !!
NR setting ? Where to find it?
Dear Dave Cheung, thank you very much for posting this very helpful video. I have just purchased a second hand 'as new' RX100 Mk III and implemented all your settings. Resulting in some pretty wonderful pictures, thank you! What I am struggling with is how to implement the Memory Recall settings i.e. how to fix them as 1, 2 and 3. No doubt time eludes you but, if by miracle you find time, please can you do a short video on achieving precisely that task. Thank you in advance, kind regards, Han.
Thanks for taking the time to write and for the kind words. Happy shooting!
Thanks for this. I will try some of this on m4 that I have got regarding the light trail settings as been trying other ways and not getting far!
Dave, thank you for your post..but, we have a dedicated button to change the exposure compensation...right..?..so we do not need to program that function on the control ring..right..?
perfect breakdown..all the important things i needed to hear.. great video..
Glad to be of help kevo Bouboushian :) Still loving this little cam!
pretty awesome review, thank you! will plan to buy on black friday!
Tip regarding saving battery life:
If you set the viewfinder setting to viewfinder (instead of auto), the display will be completely turned off when the viewfinder is up (but otherwise active). You won't be needing the pseudo-deactivate button as suggested in the video.
Danial Namousi True, but I switch between the LCD and viewfinder too frequently to make this menu item a viable solution.
Fair enough! Either way, thanks for a very helpful video and a great channel.
Very good review Dave. It really helps. The thing I am really missing comparing to RX100M2 is to turn of the GUI of the Control Ring. I hope Sony will fix this in the firmware.
Agreed: it's such an awesome camera already but some minor changes can make it even a better beast. Please let your local camera store/Sony rep know!
***** I started a thread on DPreview regarding this and some other findings I have. www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3700658
Dave,
Great video. Love the exposure compensation on the ring, great idea.
Mike
This is a great help and excellent video on the settings for this cool camera. You did a great job with it!
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment itakeyourphoto! Makes the effort worthwhile :)
great job bro! any more instructional vids on the camera please?
Thanks +Alkesh Mistry ! Have longer write-up and sample images (Straight out of camera and edited) plus raw video footage in the link in the comment. Cheers!
Thanks for all the tips. Is there a way to turn off the shutter noise on this camera?
Great video! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and tips!
Thanks for watching and the kind words. Happy shooting Tobias Jacobsson :)
Andy Nickless Congrats on the new camera! Yes: amazing quality in a tiny package :) Happy shooting!
Man this is a super-cool-well-done video. Thank you ;)
Matteo Lepore Thanks for taking the time to write and the kind words!
Best explanation yet, keep at it!!!!!!!!
Afif Thanks for watching and the kind words! Happy shooting :)
Do you need an sd card to store pictures on the camera
Hi Dave ,Thank you very much! God bless you!
God bless you back!!
So yeah I bought it and thanks followed along to set it up- great. Sorry to be such a newb but I'm having trouble setting up the MR presets- little helps please?
Hi David Keets. What do you mean by "MR presets"?
This is awesome. Thanks for sharing.
BTW, why dont you shoot in raw?
Thank you, I wanted to ask you please let me know how to unlock the rocket dial ring we used for ISO on right and left for Focus and downside for exposure and upper side for screen function when I trying to use for shutter speed to move clock or anti clock it is locked. please help me out. regards
Thank you so much for this informative video. I learned a lot. Any recommended settings for taking video on a cruise ship due to all the motion?
Cruise ships will be much less shaky than the boat we were on :) You should be fine.
Thanks for this helpful video how do I remove the date imprint from my shots ?
6:25 Hi Dave! I'm new to cameras and I was just wondering how to easily get my AVCHD video onto a Mac? I can't find the link you mentioned and I accidentally recorded a few videos on that format! Thanks!
Thanks for making this! Really informative. Much appreciated.
Thanks, Dave! Very clear and helpful.
Very welcome and thanks for watching :)
Mult NR is just not so nice for battery life or when you want to take a lot of pictures in a short time, but it's certainly an upgrade to the image quality.
thx so much for this interesting video man! Great job! Best regards, matteo
I have the Sony RX100 V this was helpful!
Jenn and Brandon Rogers Check the link and there's a software I use to convert AVCHD to MOV which I use.
Many thanks for a superb tutorial..
Dave, I can't get the Exposure Compensation to work on the Control Ring in the 2 Auto Modes & any of the Scene Modes. It will only work in the "A", "P", "S" & "M"' modes. What am I doing wrong?
Hi Dave I have exposure problem , some time if I use aperture mode or manual? How to determine whether the exposure is right. Thank you
+Foo Richard Too big a question that doesn't have a one-answer-fits-all.
Only up to 50 too here in Malaysia! Sigh. I want that 120fps!
Thanks for our help.
silenthunterpty Check your SD card: you need to use SDXC cards (I have recommendations for compatible cards here: notsoancientchinesesecrets.com/sony-rx100m3-review-best-point-shoot-camera/ ) to record XAVC format.
where do i go exactly for iMovie to read my avchd videos? can't find the "blog" you refer to
+RMSFAM09 itunes.apple.com/ca/app/clipwrap/id553085183?mt=12 ... at the end of this video at the top of the screen he pops up a link to the blog ... the app however is $50 ... looking for a free solution myself
Thank you for making this video - huge help!
Is there a possible way to hide the bottom icons? Using this as a webcam the icons kind of get in the way with wanting to not display them for the viewers.
Thank you I never thought about that ☺
Great tutorial on the too-complicated Sony menu system.
You know if you look in the viewfinder the lcd turns off. It has a proximity reader, so you can just save battery by putting your finger over the evf.
You say that the XAVC S plays well with Mac, but that raises some issues:
1) I currently have a Sony HD TV (not 4K)- so my understanding is that I currently have no way show all the resolution that XAVC S offers.
I added the link to ClipWrap on the blog here: notsoancientchinesesecrets.com/sony-rx100m3-review-best-point-shoot-camera/
Hope this helps and happy shooting :)
***** Your response on the XAVC S Codec surprised me, so I did a Google search and found many references to the fact that XAVC S is in fact 4K. Here's an excerpt from a 2013 Sony press release:
“XAVC S” profile-
Resolution: 4K (3840 x 2160), HD, and Proxy
Compression: MPEG-4 AVC/H.264
Wrapping format: MP4
Audio: Linear PCM and AAC
Looking further, I found that Apple's App store has an app called iXAVC ($34.99), which can convert XAVC S to Apple Intermediate Codec MOV format, which can then be handled directly by iMovie.
David Behr I don't have any experience doing time-lapse with the RX100M3 so cannot help.
David
Great review, lots of camera not so much talking heads, must be
an actual secret given the huge number of talking head camera
guys. I also just picked up the DX100M3, a week before the M4
announcement. Just one question, on the MR setting I can
see the 3 different memory settings. On my camera they are
all the same. I can't seem to get into the settings on each page
and change the settings. I have the 1.2 firmware. Any hints
or better yet, another video on how to change the settings
and maybe some choices like black and white, etc.?
Cheers
Thanks Richard Demaray . Re: Memory Recall locations. Goto Menu > Camera > Memory to SET your Memory Recall settings. To recall them, goto Menu > Camera > Memory recall. Hope this helps.
Thank's Dave! A good tutorial
very nice videos - thanks -
jon hermannsson Thanks for watching!
Does it has step zoom function like S95? 28mm 35mm 50mm and so forth
+Doug Klock found it! Expensive though ... are there any free solutions?
itunes.apple.com/ca/app/clipwrap/id553085183?mt=12
+Doug Klock There might be other options, but this one is super simple and fast.
thanks a lot for the effort on this great video!
does it use the same battery type as the previous versions?
Yup: same battery.
Hi there,
Very good videos on this great little camera, thanks.
What should my top dial be set at while I make these changes?
Excellent video.
Keep going!
Thanks moysatos ! Much appreciate and thanks for watching!
Is this camera still relevant in 2024? Sorry for asking dumb question. This is the only camera i have and i want to use it in Japan. Thanks for sharing this tips and tricks.
Can you recommend me the settings if i want to take long-shutter pics when I'm using a tripod? (e.g. taking pics of northern lights)
hey I was wondering if a 128gb sdxc card will work on this camera?
im curious are you using Auto or M when set for these changes? and how do you change aperture in manual if you change the ring function? this is a great video btw thank you for it.
Alejandro Garcia When the ring function is changes, you toggle between shutter and aperture by pressing down on the 4-way rocker. THanks for the kind words and happy shooting :)
***** thanks it takes alot of the thought process off by making these adjustments. They are very helpful.
Hi there, I thought I need some piece of advice here. I own sony rx100iii and tried to understand how AF works and how to control AF. I realize they have two kind of AF, first is a few green box [ ] and second is green frame line - - -,
Can we control this?
***** Thanks dave for quick and honest reply, I wish you can figure it out. I love your vids, keep it up buddy!
hi, from your video, u cna set it to 60i 24M(fx), may i noe what memory card u r using? i am using the sandisk extreme pro 64gb.U3, C10 SDXC 4K ultra HD, but my record setting can only go up to 50i. pls advise
may be country dependant option
Having now configured my camera to his liking; I want to know how to revert to default settings with everything automated because I am not going to remember any of this.
Pretty sure there's a factory reset somewhere. #googleisyourfriend
I found the factory reset. Thank you. The camera takes good enough photos in its default configuration. Customization is for people who know what they are doing or are willing to learn.
Is the auto focus significantly better than S95?
hi ***** , thanks for the great review.
Hi dave just want to ask why is it the f1.8 and the +/- keeps on blinking on my rx100 iv what is the meaning of that?
+David Co Robles III Can't be sure since I don't know the exact settings of your camera and shooting situation, but likely because the camera meter thinks there is not enough light?
+Dave Cheung thank you dave...
+Dave Cheung just want to ask what is the different of raw and jpeg and the extra fine?thank you
You saved my life, thank you ~
LOL! +Teresa Chueh Glad to be of help :)
+Dave Cheung Hey i tried your setting ( almost all ) but my front camera part for the ISO isn't working :( ... why?
+Teresa Chueh the first thing he teaches you to change is the control ring to control exposure compensation. You can change it back to change iso if you like
Yes, but I did exactly what the video said about the control exposure using the ring but like when i go to take a picture and i move the ring it doesn't do anything :(
Hi, is there a way to turn of the sound of the shutter?
Jack Daw Yup!
Great, but how?
O.k. I figured it out, thanks anyway.
love the site by the way!
Thank you +Doug Klock ! It's a labour of love and your encouragement means more than you know :) Cheers!
Can anyone tell what is "4k still image PB"? And why is it not turning on?
Hello,
Please i need to buy a camera that can give me great and high quality photos for my work like finishing, decorating and some materials, also to use it for my personal traveling, my budget about 800 usd , so what camera i should to buy and what lens , thank you
Hi Ibrahim Nabil.
