About the film:
Whales sink boats, shellfish poison a coastal town. In this adaptation of Schätzing’s novel, nature seems to be taking its revenge. A research team becomes the last hope - not only fighting this threat, but also corrupt corporations and politicians.

This is why NASA went to space and not the oceans they clearly didn't like what they found.
NASA doesn't deal with ocean it deals with atmosphere and space

What a wasted opportunity...
As a connoisseur of the book, I was thrilled when I heard there would be a film adaptation, I have always imagined how epic and overwhelming it would look. Figured that with a budget like that, something decent HAD to come out of it. Well, I watched the last episodes a couple of hours ago and holy Mary mother of God, was that a disappointment.
Where on earth is the tension? Where is the global danger? Why is it not pointed out that the American military as well as other global actors (national governments, the UN etc) called for multiple crisis meetings because the world is sinking into horror and panic?
There are so many wasted opportunities, so much time wasted on dull, superficial, and sometimes extreme BORING dialogue. Although the actors are more than capable, they are forced to stare apathetically into the distance for minutes at a time, to reveal backstories that have no relevance to the plot, to enter into cheesy and short-lived romances that don't touch you emotionally in the slightest.
In addition, of course, many characters have been drastically changed (more diverse, higher female quota, etc.), which in itself could have been great if their essence had not been lost. I would have been happy to see Samantha Crowe smoking like a steam engine, the narcissistic Greywolf, or the actual villain Judith Li and her gang of criminals pursuing their egomaniacal goals (which for some reason have been erased). What remains are empty shells that disappoint, severely.
Caught myself falling asleep in between and skipping forwards, only to keep on watching to see how it ends. It leaves nothing but a bitter aftertaste and sadness that such a unique opportunity was wasted. The ZDF should, if they use German tax money to such a massive extent, but please be able to conjure up something that inspires. A disgrace.
Thank you for your honest opinion and review. I am as well a very big fan of the book, I think it's a masterpiece.

I completely disagree.I was able to unofficially see the first 3 episodes and honestly, as someone who doesn't usually like French series, it's great!! I think the fact that there are so many countries and actors of diverse nationalities involved really helps.Enormément" translates to "A lot/very much" in English.
"It had been a long time since I found a show with decent French people to watch :) Now, we'll see if the story will continue to be interesting and not become cliché and predictable. I hope so!"
@Pterodáctilo pterodáctilo Well I can imagine that the series might appeal to people who have not read the book yet. But once you have, you expect so much more because the bar has been set so high..

haha, ich weiß nicht, ob es Bestseller gibt, aber mit dem Literaturnobelpreis prämierte Romane.
Vielleicht sollte mal jemand einen Film darüber drehen, wie reihenweise Schauspieler mit dunkler Hautfarben und Schlitzaugen für eine politische Agenda einer angeblichen "Vielfalt" missbraucht werden.

I'm disappointed Johanson doesn't dress like in the book. Bow-tie and mismatched on purpose. I don;t think he's gonna even be portrayed the same.

My advice, after watching the trailer , just watch the last 25 minutes of chapter 8, that’s what I did. And I didn’t regret it. Nothing spectacular at the end.

And BTW, yes the novel is good, but some of us dont need or even like, to have the movies/shows just like the books. I LOOOVE plenty of Movies & Shows that are not like the books, even more so! If that stuff does bother you (as apparently its enough to be political to Ursula), just do a little research first to see if its for you or not. Tho, I do hope I have helped instead of hindered. I didn’t read the book, but I enjoyed the show honestly don’t care if it wasn’t like the book. I think it’s a interesting concept on what’s really down deep in the ocean.

The Swarm (2021) Netflix. French scientist tries to breed locusts for food to combat world food shortages.
Swarm (2023) Prime. Teen music drama.
This doesn't seem to be available yet outside Europe and Japan.

@@alebe7224 they are literally on Episode 3 of season 1, you assume it's bad without even seeing everything. Can't review it as a whole when you have only scratched the surface.

@@babyboy00015 its like watching people watching .... and walking.... and looking astonoshed. So much potential and they tell it in sloooooooooooooooooooooow motion. Even an Ent is talking faster.
Oh, and they dont even get the citys right, showing a hotel instead of the world famous GEOMAR in Kiel.
You will be disappointed because they have butchered the book, the plot and the characters.

Just finished watching the show and...it is not bad meaning the idea/plot is different & absorbing but it certainly needs improvement, especially the writing and the acting. Focus on the SCI-FI part and stop providing so much background info. In short, start showing instead of telling because it is not landing. As for the acting, most of them need to show more emotion and forget about landing on their mark when delivering lines. With peace and love, Charlie, Cécile, and the Captain cannot be the only ones carrying the show on their backs. For instance, Leon plays a main role in the beginning and he is the one that gives us nothing. Hope this gets to someone on the team because I want season #2.
