Merry Christmas ya filthy animal.
I once had a cocktail with components that were infused with tomato, iberico ham, and herbs. It wasn't labeled as a pizza cocktail but it was fucking amazing, and like an upscale pizza-based cocktail. I can't recall the ingredients but they involved a dry vermouth and a bourbon.
Would you still call it a Pizza if you swapped the vodka for tequila, triple sec, and lime, or would you then call it a Pizza Margarita? ;P
In the ingredients...what is "black petter"?
@@AhNee "black pepper", or peppercorn. It was just a minor typo. He mentions that you can't exclude the salt and pepper from the cocktail in the video, as well, so context confirms that.
How To Drink:
50% cocktail/mixology work pioneering legit good drinks
50% Greg's masochism, and self-torture through mixtures most would describe as 'unfit for human consumption'
And we love him for it.
I feel like it's more 30/70
How does his expert wisdom factor in?
@@lephishe6271
50% large words he couldn't spell, used occasionally.
50% "I know this is going to be bad, but you asked for it" = the masochism part. lol
You should invite Macaulay Culkin to the show and have him try the Pizza Cocktail.
He loves to do cameos.
If he can do Red Letter Media, he can show up here.
Oh yeah, he Totally just vibes with whomever wants to hang, a really chill dude haha. Would be so fun. He would probably also love the cursed cocktails type stuff, would add them to his prank list (yup, he is definitely a prankster)
Or to use his full name, Macaulay Macaulay Culkin Culkin.
Maybe he will even perform one of his pizza covers
Surprised you didnt try a touch of wheated burbon to get a bit of bread flavor in the pizza
Splash of beer for the yeast.
My husband suggested something similar, like using a yeasty alcohol as the base instead of vodka. Personally, I don't think it's necessary because he was more going for the essence of the pizza, which he seems to have captured.
Not to mention the fact that there are so many types of crust (sourdough, cornmeal, almost nutty flatbreads, etc.) that it would probably be more divisive given that different people prefer different types of crust.
I was thinking something similar. A friend and I mix roughly equal parts screwball, raspberry liqueur, and miller high life to make a PB&J sandwich shot. The yeast and cereal flavors of the beer are really what make it work.
Just a heads up, the red bar at the bottom of the thumbnail on smart tv looks exactly the same as the progress bar that appears on videos that you already watched. This made it seem like I already watched the video even though I hadn't!!! Wouldn't want for some viewers to miss it :p
Also looks this way on the computer! I've clicked the video because it said 14 minutes ago, or else I wouldn't have because of the bar.
I thought it was a RUclips bug, from the auto preview.
I need a How to Drink book with his custom drinks like these
Yes, this seems like a natural evolution. We love Greg's drinks, he should be proud of them!
Seconded!
I need HTD and Drinking History mixology books...
easy! the recipes are in the description and you can copy them to notes or screenshot them then print when you can.
“Nothing is ever finished until it’s finished”
This quote inspired me to complete a piece of art I’ve been contemplating for a bit
I wonder if you could rim a glass with the parmesan packet from a pizza place. Maybe even sprinkle in a little from the red pepper flake packet.
i was thinking the same thing, or even nutritional yeast, as it has a very parmasean-from-the-green-can flavor but isn't quite as salty
@@jghiloni Yeast tastes to me more like a garlic, so while it'd still fit the profile, I'd worry about it being overwhelming.
@@KyleRayner12 both? both. yes, i think both.
@KyleRayner12 interesting! I always add dried garlic to my nooch haha and some black pepper. I don't think it tastes like parmesan it's just a toasty umami flavour but it can fill the same niche as parmesan like on a ceasar salad.
@@Rose-jz6sx That makes sense, but it'd still be interesting to add something more reminiscent of cheese itself, like the aforementioned paremesan rim. Cashews are used for vegan cheese, so I'm wondering if there'd be a way to get that flavoring in there.
A classic napolitan pizza has fresh mozzarella which isn't that cheesy in flavour but mostly creamy, so maybe floating a little bit of (shaken) cream on top might be a good addition to represent fresh mozzarella
My method of saving fresh basil is to put it in a blender with vodka and store the result in the freezer. I add to cooking whenever needed and the alcohol boils off.
How much vodka? Just enough to wet it?
I buy a bottle (750 mL) of the cheapest vodka, use a whole pack of basil, blend, and put the whole thing in the freezer.
@@jonwesick2844 How much is a whole pack of basil? Mine is sold as little potted plants.
@@adde9506 It depends where you get it and for how much. Maybe $5 to $7.
For the pizza cocktail, you could garnish with a couple fresh mozzarella balls. Would add cheese in a good way.
God yes
Garnish with a cheese stick? XD
You know its gonna be good when the Episode starts with "*Pizza Syrup*"
At 1:42 Greg says that "syrups are not rocket surgery" and I now need to know what rocket surgery is and how one performs it.
Rocket surgery, is what the machinist and engineer does with the phyicist when the general wants to know what the random other nation is doing with thier rockets.
Or what Elon Musk is NOT having done so he keeps blowing up rockets.
But it is exceptionally fun to do.
Elon is just playing KSP at this point.@@AnonymousAnarchist2
You may have been able to add a fresh-cheese note to the pizza cocktail by substituting a portion of the table sugar in the 2-to-1 simple syrup with lactose sugar. This won't curdle as it's not protein and is about 1/3 as sweet as table sugar, but not significantly hygroscopic.
Better than my idea, which was to rim the glass with fresh Parmesan.
See, now, I'm glad I'm not the only one in a "mad science" mood this week. You've definitely got the harder death ray to build though, I'm just making apple pie liqueur for a cocktail night. Looking forward to an eventual "this is for Greg" episode dicking around with Applejack and Angostura.
“I should have a drink in my hand more when I do this show… This is a good idea.”
Amen brother.
first thought on this is that using syrup to deliver the herb flavors and then pairing with tomato would give you close to a san marzano pizza sauce type flavor
I just wanted to say: I'm not even a big drinker (current bottles in my home: Amaretto Di Amore Raspberry, Chambord, Grand Marnier, and a bottle of brandy whose label I can't remember - and only the GM is "mine," so to speak), but I've been binging this channel for the last 2 months. It has been both informative and wildly entertaining. I've been taking notes on what I'd want to stock when I finally am able to curate my own "home bar," so to speak.
Thank you, so much, for this channel. Stay safe, and Happy Holidays!
These seem so cool. If I were to do a twist on the ice cream sundae, I'd use peanut orgeat instead of simple and put a cherry at the bottom.
Greg: I should start every episode with a drink in my hand! This is a great idea!
Narrator Ron Howard: It wasn't a great idea.
There's a cocktail bar in the Lower East Side of Manhattan called Double Chicken Please that has been popping up on a bunch of "best of" lists lately and in their back room, they make a "Cold Pizza" cocktail that uses parmigiano reggiano. Haven't had it, but there are plenty of videos of them making it because the garnish is a little edible pizza decal on the foam. They have a lot of interesting cocktails, with their back room cocktail menu inspired by a bunch of different dishes. I've only been once and it was very good!
For the pizza cocktail, I'd maybe try rimming the glass with parmesan, and getting it to stick by first rolling the rim in olive oil, as opposed to citrus juice. And then maybe a light sprinkle of red pepper flake and/or dry oregano over top, so you really get the NYC slice shop experience.
I appreciate the return of two videos a week. I can't imagine how much work it is to plan, create, edit, respond, and whatever else goes into making this show happen, but I think I can speak for many when I say thank you Greg! I hope your able to take some time for yourself and your family during the holidays I always get excited to see each week's videos. I miss the midnight local (I work the overnight shift so I would listen on either TY or iheart ). You're a talented and creative person, and I hope we can all see the good in people this holiday season. I hope everyone can take a little time these next few weeks and relax, talk to someone you havent heard from in awhile, tell people how much they mean to you, and enjoy every moment you can. Cheers to you all!
Someone else has probably already said this, but just in case: have you tried using nutritional yeast to add a cheese element to cocktails?
Oh, and if/when Midnight Local comes back, I would love to hear your thoughts on Godzilla Minus One.
The creativity on this channel is intoxicating and in the best of ways. 👍🍻
I know I love it!
I made some pizza-themed popcorn, and it's pretty good!
It hits that pizza craving for me idk, maybe 80% as good as the real thing?
The only improvement would be to find a way to include tomato somehow.
Maybe a sundried tomato, but I didn't have any on hand.
2 parts each: dried oregano, salt
1 part each: dried thyme, dried basil, fennel seeds, black pepper, msg
grind fine in a mortar & pestle
mix with olive oil in a big bowl with a lid to make a thin sauce
shake the popcorn in the sauce thoroughly (I go by the ten second rule like a cocktail shaker)
You need to check out Smosh Pit’s most recent “Eat It Or Yeet It: Happy Hour” episode. Tommy (their pseudo-residential mixologist) makes a Pad Thai cocktail that sounds really interesting and tasty!
The amount of episodes that you have been able to pump out recently is AMAZING, thx for the amazing entertainment!
An easy short cut to the pizza cocktail...Pizza Pie'Chuga from 451 Spirits in Columbus,OH. It is a white whiskey infused with sun-dried tomato, garlic, basil , pepperoni and whole slices of pizza before being re-distilled. And somehow it does taste like a pepperoni pizza.
There's actually a pizza cocktail called "cold pizza" from a new york city bar called "Double chicken please." It's a tequila "flip" with basil, tomato, parmigiano regiano, honey, and burnt toast. I' haven't tried it but i heard it's good!
In before the title change.
The good ol Title+Thumbnail refresh, sucks that content creators gotta make these tweaks to get a wider reach thanks to RUclips's algorithm but Greg puts so much effort into his craft that I can't fault him when he's gotta play the game a little bit.
Real fans remember when it was called "Easily the worst idea I've ever had"
And there we go 😂
In before I realized the title had been changed
@@inktoxicantyeah that crap kinda bugs me ha
The work on perfecting a cheesy cocktail could also work for the Mac and cheese he was planning on having the night of the break in. But like the cheese pizza that was already eaten the first night with the family I don't think he ever got around to eating it.
I still love that you have the botlle of nectar from the Hades episode on thr shelf. Such a nice piece.
I made a “pizza negeoni” with Moletto tomato gin, muddled basil and oregano garnish. There should be more pizza cocktails! I’ll give yours a shot! It sounds good for sure.
Maybe some holiday drinks? I love going through your catalog looking for new things to make for the holidays like your mulled wine recipe.
You could have done a bloody Mary for the pizza one man. If anything with the words cocktail, and pizza are put together my assumption would be a bloody Marie. Serve it hot like an alcoholic borscht too. Vodka topped with Marinara sauce with pizza toppings like a soup. Then grate cheese on top, blow torch it for an effect if you want. It would be fairly tame compared to a lot of blood Marie recipes out there.
I love episodes like this
both of these are now on my must try list, really looking forward for some pizza.
“This should have a light pink color” *comes out bright yellow*
Reminds me of the caprese cocktail one of the bars near me made for their summer menu - their main ingredient was an olive oil washed vodka, and the presentation was more martini than old fashioned
Using a mozzarella cheese stick as a “stir” worked well for us! Fun recipe!
Tip on the syrup... simmer your herbs (or whatever you're making a syrup of,) in your water first. Strain, _then_ add the sugar. It's just less messy that way, and you also won't gum up your strainer/cheesecloth with sugar.
The first time I made basil syrup, I strained the basil out after adding the sugar. I lost most of the syrup while straining it because it all stuck to the basil, lol. That's when I learned the lesson you're expressing, here.
Really enjoyed this episode
I know odds are you will not see this but I tried it and LOVED it. Thank you.
Love that we’re seeing how to make the syrup! Any chance to recreate the Acadia hot butter bourbon batter? Been trying to recreate it for a year and it comes out weird. Don’t know if it’s something with the straining process or not
I owned a bar in Vietnam and our Bartender created an incredible Pho shot. I think you should try and make it happen.
I love creative drinks like these
Love this episode.
J.P. Wiser's apparently has a vanilla whisky now, which would probably work well in place of the vanilla vodka if you can get it (it's Canadian). It's sweet af, so you could completely omit the simple as well. (It's got a bit of an amaretto vibe to it, although it tastes less like alcohol than Disoronno does. Somehow.) My ID came in a week early and I got to go _into_ a liquor store for the first time since the old one expired in 2020 lol
I’d recommend adding the vine if it comes with the tomatoes when shaking. Adds a surprising amount of that green house tomato smell
I remember having this one sweet vermouth that had a strong herbacious flavor like he's describing, though its more rosemary than oregano. I'm wondering if I can make a savory cocktail with it.
The pizza cocktail should definitely be called a Little Nero. I'm interested to know if a (very light) addition of fennel would suggest a sausage pizza flavor.
Double Chicken Please in NYC has a pizza cocktail called day old pizza. It's an amazing cocktail and it sounds very similar to this but with a sour dough note as well. It was one of my favorites on the menu.
Double Chicken Please has a cold pizza cocktail and it's amazing! You gotta try it if you're ever in NYC.
This was almost timed perfectly for Doritos Liqueur to play the cheese role!
Hey Greg, idk if anyone has already said this but this video may not get as many clicks because of the red bar at the bottom of the video in the home alone logo. I almost missed it because usually a full red bar means ive already watched it! Love your experiments, they're awesome and i love seeing them.
In Athens I went t9 a bar that did a Greek Salad Gimlet. It was amazing. Love a savoury cocktail
I know you said you don't want cheese in that pizza cocktail but I might try that cocktail with a parmesan rim.
I admire your madness & showmanship. 👍🏽
I once had a pizza-inspired ice cream sundae at Eataly! It had goat cheese ice cream, basil gelato, and tomato gelato all drizzled with olive oil! Surprisingly good!
You never cease to amaze.
As someone who worked at a pizza shop, you might be surprised to know that it was typical to ad a portion of sugar to our sauce to knock off the tinny edge to canned tomato - Also! you should think about garnishing it with Bay Leaf.
Definitely going to make the pizza cocktail, that looks amazing. Nutritional yeast could be an interesting addition, very cheesy flavor-wise.
I think a little bit of coffee liqueur in the cholate float would do well to compliment the flavor of the chocolate and serve to make more of a visual contrast in the ice cream drink. but def a good starting point!
I was, legit, thinking about you earlier today. Mainly because my late uncle, when he was alive, would make his own eggnog ( thinking back a few years back to when you made eggnog)that I had to comment.
that low little "...one more sip. shit thats good", that was such a genuine almost romantic relationship with that creation, thats when you know its REAL good
About a year ago, a local cocktail bar in my area had a fantastic drink that might be similar to what you're trying to achieve with the pizza cocktail. I can't remember all the ingredients off the top of my head but I know they used a tomato shrub and feta-washed tequila. I then believe they used basil they used basil and maybe some citrus. All I can remember is that it was fantastic and savory.
Starting with an Old Fashioned is totally on brand.
Sounds intriguing. All the spices in the pizza cocktail remind me of of a cocktail I used to enjoy which was comprised of Glenlivet 12yr, Lehua Honey, and Housemade Chili Pepper Water, served in a glass with a smoked salt rim. I dunno if they had any unlisted ingredients.
Would love to see you try to make a butter beer - I was thinking butterscotch schnapps, spiced rum, cream soda with a whip of cream, vanilla, and amoretto and a caramel drizzle
Get the pre-grated parmesion and rim the glass for the pizza cocktail.
Could have garnished the pizza cocktail with a wheel of babybel or a slice of mild mozza as well as the basil
You should do some whiskey tastings and stuff I’d love to see what you think of some more top shelf whisk(e)ys
I wonder if you could rim the glass w/ something like parmesan to get some cheesy flavor w/o adding it directly to the drink.
Whatever is in boba tea cheese foam is excellent and may work for a topper for a cocktail to add “cheese” flavor without overpowering
I just got my hands on some vanilla bean paste and had the idea of making a bourbon vanilla simple syrup (a Christmas cocktail or for my coffee) but I've done a couple batches and can't nail it down. Any tips or recipes
Looks cool! I wonder what it would be like if you used fat washed vodka using mozzarella. I don’t think it would be super cheesy given how neutral the mozzarella is.
A dash of whiskey in the wiped cream adds that touch of caramel you mentioned at the end of the ice cream Sunday
I recently had a cocktail that was similar and they used mozzarella whey which worked surprisingly well.
i love! i wonder if the pizza one would be even more pizza-y if you used a tomato water with the syrup, or how well that would work
Maybe try a creme fresh float on the pizza cocktail
Use some Smoked or wood bitters to get a pizza oven smell and taste on it. (maybe coat the glass with it vs incorporating it.
Don't put cheese in it but i think a garnish of a few small mozzarella pearls, an olive, and maybe a pepperoni cube. A little flavor enhancer to snack on.
A 1/2 oz of a bread grain forward whisky or even like a hearty beer might add A LOT.
Add some basil into the shaker
Bring back Midnight Local! Yall got me hooked and now nothing for months! Keep up all the great work, love all the content.
Vanilla vodka is fine as a starting place, but lately my local liquor store has had alcoholic whipped cream and I think I would top your sundae drink with some of that.
In some beers they will add sweetness and some creamy mouth feel they use lactose since it is a non-fermentable sugar. I wonder how it would taste if you make your syrup with that instead.
Greg needs to buy the Doritos liquor
The.
What?!
This EXISTS !?!?
@@bobbygarza6263 I spat out my tea. Thanks for the laugh
I don't understand why this exists, but it does,
When did this start existing?
I feel like a pinch of MSG as well as the salt could give a savory cheesiness to the drink to make it more pizza-y
Maybe you could oil wash the vodka in cheese oil for the pizza cocktail. I used a similar method to make a Cacio E Pepe dirty martini with parm stock and parm oil and it was delicious!
I would love to see a full episode about force-carbonated drinks with the drinkmate! I've seen you do a few on the show and would love a compiled list (so I can try them all with my new drinkmate 😆😆)
Oh yeah. It’s all coming together
I wonder if using that dried parmesan they use at pizza joins would be good to add cheese flavor
st. george makes a basil eau de vie that’s divine if you wanna throw that in
The tomato and basil cocktail reminds me of the Caprese Martini I first heard about as a running gag/story point in the weird ass Neo Yokio anime from a few years back. Looks like a few people have had a crack at bringing it into the real world since. I'm not sure doing a show on a barely remembered anime series would do wonders for your SEO, but turning a basil, tomato, mozzarella and vingarette salad into a martini might be a little bit of fun if you want to keep messing with savoury cocktails.
I feel like if I were Kevin and my family forgot me two years in a row during the family vacation, I would lord that over their heads for life. They got mad at him for racking up 1000 dollars in room service, my clap-back would be "you forgot me and left me to fend for myself, not once, but TWICE". Also, I feel like if they can afford to book not-only a like dozen-person trip to Miami (this the 90's, after some quick googling, about 500 dollars seems like the higher average price for a round-trip plane ticket) during the holiday season, as well as an international trip to Paris during the holiday season, not to mention that they were able to like immediately book last-minute flights with no worry, as well as probably cancel even more expensive reservations. I'm not saying a 1000 dollar room service bill for one child isn't a lot, especially by early 90's standards, and the fact that this is probably one of the most expensive hotels in New York City, but compared to TWO round-trip flights for about a dozen people (back to what I said earlier with estimated costs, and I do mean a very rough estimate, it's at the very least 12000 dollars), just under 1000 dollars is a dent by comparison.
The ice cream sundae as a Pousse Cafe!
So I came here for ideas because I’m having a 90s theme children’s pizza party then you suggested that at the end so I kinda have to make them both…
Suggestion for the pizza drink: a parmesan foam topper? Or maybe a fresh mozzarella ball dipped in balsamic on a cocktail stick.
If you're going for a pepperoni pizza, a mini skewer of black olives and uncured pepperoni cubes.
This reminds me of the caprese martini from Neo Yokio (the Jaden Smith Anime)
Dry ingredients will always make a better syrup imo. Use the fresh as garnish to lift it
Oooh, rimming the ice cream cocktail glass with frosting and crushed cookies could be really good
