  • The Baroque violin has, in truth, not really changed that much. I mean, sure: there's the shoulder rest and the chin rest, the elongated fingerboard, the absence of gut strings. But compare that to the modern piano and the harpsichord. Right? It's barely comparable! Somehow, though, these little things speak volume.
My friend let me try her instrument the other day- this gorgeous Roggeri that had been redone in it's original Baroque styling. The sound was just incredible- but I could NOT get over the little nubbin of a chinrest she had on it. It was the most uncomfortable thing I'd ever played, despite it's sound- and gave me a newfound respect for these instruments and the people who play them. It's so limiting in our modern terms, and yet some of the greatest music ever was written for these set ups. What I would give to go back in time, and hear these instruments in their infancy!
Anyway, if you're interested in the violin, you should watch this video. I learned more than I thought I would about my instrument from speaking with Evan Few, violinist of the Filament Baroque Ensemble. I'm sure you will too!
