Sam Mitchell does deserve the bulk of thr credit. It is not a co-incidence that he was WC midfield coach in 2018. He has put us in a position to be strong on field for the next 5+ years.
Looking at the Wizard now, I can hardly imagine what a damaging force this bloke could be in a few years time. Everything he is struggling with now are things most young players struggle with and which can be improved, but his creativity and footy intelligence is on another level.
Would love to see you go more in depth on the build of the list, with mitchell moving nash into the midfield, getting the best out of scrimshaw,/frost, and even pulling Dylan moore off the brink of delisting. Sam really did an amazing job with this list!
I'm a brisbane lions supporter and I've seen this rise coming, even though we've been thereabouts a top 4 side these last 4 or 5 years for some reason the hawks always have our number and we can't seem to figure out how to beat them. I reckon it won't happen this or next year for the hawks but I reckon in 3 years time the hawks will be right up there as flag favourites, could be even sooner though with how well their young boys are improving.
Good work. Very impressed with how Sam Mitchell has handled himself as a coach and in the Pressers. Articulate, to the point and as honest as a coach can/wants to be to the press pack. Had a plan, outlined it from the start. As you pointed out, heavily criticized. And now getting praise from those same pundits as the young Hawks, (most of the time) play good attacking footy in mostly competitive games. First timer, be watching more of your vids.
He did finally admit his pre-season prediction the Hawks would finish with the wooden spoon was a bit off the mark, lol. I can't stand his pompous self-importance. I often think it's only ex-players who understand the game well enough to comment.
Awesome video mate! Go you mighty hawks, I always knew Sam Mitchell would be good for our club and it was sad to see Clarko go but what Sam Mitchell did buy getting rid of Tom Mitchell and Jagare O’mera was very good I like it right from the begging and for people like the utter peanut head of Dameint Barret to go out and claim tanking is ridiculous and hasn’t aged well at all. I remember Kane Cornes used to hate us too, now he calls Sam Mitchell a genius! I just think whatever happens this year we is fine with me finals or not because I know when it’s our time we will make finals properly and win the GF. It’s the Hawthorn way so I will stay loyal till then and go hawks!
IMO you could see it coming with the Hawks the last couple years - there’s something to be said about having a young core of players of similar age developing together ie Day, Moore, Scrim, CMac, CMac2, Weddle, Ward, CJ, Lewis etc
Thankyou from a hawks supporter. Heaney was stiff to get a week. Glad you mentioned tanking, which it wasnt . Funny coming from barrett whose side is north
Great video, the club lost its way for a bit there trading early draft picks for experienced talent and the players recruited couldn’t fill the holes left by departing superstars. We tried to be something we’re not, young talent has to always be priority, we’re on the right track now and are in a position to top up the list with experience soon, but I just hope we don’t give away our early draft picks.
At some point, you also need some more experienced player, and I am not (necessarily) talking about the Gunstons of this world, but just players who have already developed and have a few seasons of AFL footy in their legs, in the age category 25-28. Hawks have been (sometimes just slightly) outclassed by other teams the last two seasons (imo) due to a lack of experience. But I agree, Hawthorn’s succes was always due to an amazing eye for young talent.
They were scary because they played "Thug ball". Hodge, Jordan Lewis & Brian Lake used their fists to subdue opponents and the umpires allowed it. They fell off the rails because they started getting old.
Hawthorn has not won a final since 2015, they look almost certain to go 9 straight years without winning a final. Sure they are doing better than expected in 2024, but they have clearly gone into a huge decline since the end of 2015. 9 years without winning a final in a salary capped comp is terrible.
When you have been at the top for a long time and esp won premierships the drop off can be swift (see Tigers). Hawks lost both finals in 2016 and 2018 under Clarko with an aging list, so have only missed finals action for the last 5 seasons - hardly soul destroying. With a younger list forming under a new coach and finals on the horizon I'd say the transition is going to plan. This is a club that has won a flag every decade from the 60s.
@@StanCash-xj6ie Hawthorn delisted their way out of another Premiership. 2018 was the best example of this in 2018 they finished 4th after sacking Hodge, Mitchell, Lewis, Gibson, Rioli and Hill who won the Dockers best and fairest beating Fyfe and Neale. Name me another side who could lose 6 elite players of that class and still finish 4th. If 9 years with out a finals win is not a fall from grace I don't know what is
@@Linda-tv6fn Not true - Gibson & Rioli retired, Hill requested a trade home, Mitchell played 1 year at WC in 2016 and retired in 2017. @@StanCash-xj6ie The Hawks were putting games into kids in 2017 and 2018. WHERE are those kids now? Gibson was forced into retirement. Gibson did not get a retirement game because direct quote it was better to put games into kids. @@Linda-tv6fn Clarko was still aiming for another flag via a mix of experience brought in b/w 2016-2018 (Wingard, T Mitchell, O'Meara, Vickery, Henderson, T Scully, J Patton, Frost) whilst drafting kids in Hardwick in 2015, C Nash, M Lewis, H Morrison in 2016, Impey, CJ, Worps, D Moore in 2017 and Scrimshaw in 2018, Will Day 2019. Hawthorn's last finals victory was in 2015 their last finals appearance was in 2018. They are again unlikely to make the finals in 2024. Clearly, they have made a lot of errors in this time. Hawthorns last finals win was in 2015 almost a decade ago. I am surprised that the Hawks are being praised. Why is nobody talking about this incredible fall from grace?
They lost a qualifying final after the siren in 16, and were poor in 18. We've won a flag every 5 years since 1961 on average. You measure by finals wins, we measure in premierships, and we all see us very nicely on track
@@NickPYates The 2016 Hawthorn team had a much better list than the Western Bulldogs. Thanks for the work on this video. Coming from an overseas Hawks fan. It was a great summation
This reminds me of Clarko's culling he did to some good hawks players when he arrived. But it payed off eh?!
If we beat Collingwood next match, stamp confirmed. Meek pick up can not be understated. 2023 list changes amazing. Watson & Dear check & check.

He’s also incredibly tough for his size too, he’s not scared to get amongst it with the big blokes & his 2nd…3rd efforts are elite
Great recap of the journey so far, thank you

@Posy13 who would have thought Kane corne eating humble pie . Yet David King doesn't have anything against hawthorn but still doesn't rate us
Hawthorn not us
The percentage might cost Hawthorn this year, next year, the sky is the limit, they could already be flag favourites.
