  • Body Armor for Home Defense Makes Sense Especially in SHTF
Most people's homes are not bulletproof yet they plan on protecting their castle at all costs. This is why body armor is more practical than you think.
I wanted to demonstrate why having body armor for a home defense scenario is important. Especially in a SHTF type scenario where there is no more rule of law. The majority of homes in the USA are not made out of materials that are effective at stopping bullets. In this video, I shoot some of those materials with a 115 gr 9mm FMJ target load to show that your house is concealment, not cover.

I know body armor can only do so much. But it does actually stop bullets. Have you thought of sand bags or other ways to fortify your home?

I own lvl 4. Reality is a 22lr in the gut you’re dead in SHTF…
My thoughts on sand bags.. Great in theory. But a lot of bags and a crap load of sand, will your floor hold the weight? Depending where you live people may wonder why you have a crap ton of sand in your backyard. When SHTF happens and people are paying attention an eyebrow or 1,000 might go up when you are seen filling sandbags from your sand pile and lugging them in your house.
About the only time I’m going to try to play gray man is if my area is really hot. My group will be headed to one of our other locations. Chances are people are going to go through homes and take whatever they find and leave. We do plan to make it look like our primary location has already been raided and anything worth taking has already been taken.

Know how to do drywall? AR500 plate ripe your studs and counter sink the AR500 put the drywall back up. Pick strategic spots, corners, the like. Place cameras away from entry looking at your home, put decorations up on outside of home and know the corresponding location inside your home, and mark with decorations. You see ppl in a stack out your home on camera and know where to put rounds to hit the hips, avoid the studs, and you are behind AR500 buried in the interior walls. Really mess up an entry when the breacher is just about to hit the door and #2 in the stack goes down with #1 coming thru alone taking one to the pelvic area.

@@user-jv4ic8rh4d Just a quick search the best price I found on a 4’x8’ sheet was $4,500.. To actually fortify a home you would have to line the entire house and have sheets ready to cover the windows with slots to return fire from.
Even if you put sheets along side windows to take cover behind you still only have concealment because of the apposing side off the home. Even if you have a family/team member at that side you are still vulnerable from that side, especially depending where your windows are if the home is surrounded..
Desperate people with nothing are far more likely to team up to take other people’s stuff than a person that’s prepared is going to team up with someone that didn’t.. That’s simple logic. Unless i physically couldn’t physically leave or had health problems the only way I would legit bug in with no backup locations is line all exterior walls with 4’x8’ sheets and have some pre cut to cover windows and line doors..

I don't think it's practical for most people to armor their home. At least not the entire thing. It is enormously expensive to do so using purpose built materials and with improvised things like sandbags and steel panels, you get into structural issues to accommodate the weight.
Of course one natural area of protection is a basement, and it may be possible to fortify a safe room of some type upstairs.
In general I think it's a very bad idea to have "SHTF" strategies which involve getting into lots of gunfights. I tell people with those sorts of plans to not bother stocking more than a week or two worth of food because they'll be coyote and buzzard food themselves soon enough.

The South Africans have used a mobile barrier made from a plastic barrel filled with sand/sandbags. The barrel will set on top of a 4 wheeled furniture mover. This will allow you to roll the barrier around the interior of your house depending on the location of the threat.

    • @debluetailfly

A guy who tried gunsmithing for a while told me he had a barrel filled with sand to fire test shots into. Once a guy who didn't speak good English brought in a bolt action rifle for repair. He wasn't able to explain what was wrong. The gunsmith held the gun up at an angle, and put a cartridge in and closed the bolt. When he did the gun fired, went through a wall, and smashed a few cans of paint on high shelving in a storage area of the paint store next door. He found out what was wrong with that gun, and I suspect every time he loaded an unfamiliar gun, he kept the muzzle pointed down into that barrel of sand.

Stack hundreds of sand bags. They are cheap right now & in stock everywhere. In shtf I will hv them on the outside of my house and the inside. I will create fighting position in & outside of the house. Body armor is a must for everyone including your children. At some point I will by some for my 2 dogs.

    • @lanejohnson7656
      @lanejohnson7656 3 месяца назад +10

Correction. Thousands of sandbags. And sand bagging the outside of your home is going to draw a lot of attention. Your better off marking the exterior of your home look like it’s already been raided and went through.
People seem to love to think people are going to magically form a community and work together in a nation wide SHTF scenario, say power grid down. In my opinion the vast majority of people starting to work together is going to be mostly of the unprepared and desperate to take from others. People are likely going to form packs like dogs and hunt together..

I keep all the big feed bags from my animals to fill with sand and you stack it on the inside of your home not the outside. You don’t want them knowing what you have and when they figure out it’s too late.
9mm won’t go through cinder block nor will 556. It can break it but only mostly when block is loose. If it’s mortared it’s actually harder to break through. Trust me 100 rounds isn’t going to open a magic door. The test you he’s doing is not correct. You also have poured cell that makes the block solid in areas.

    • @daviddrago9360
      @daviddrago9360 3 месяца назад +1

Sorry MP, 9 won’t go through block that easy, loose block yes, you can break by tapping it. but not a mortared block wall. In the construction industry 30+ years. Try shooting a magic door with 100 rounds. Not going to go like you think it will. Yes they will eventually go through but the block won’t crumble, you’ll just punch holes after a while. Already tried with 556 and 9mm 308 works faster lol
Sandbags in your home will help protect you but you can also fill the cells in your block walls with sand and you will drastically slow things down. Double row stack sandbags will be your main choice for small arms fire

Guess where they are standing and shoot in a tight of a group as you can in that area and they will be picking lead out of their azz in under 10 rounds. Your mileage may very. I will argue old brick is more durable than new brick.

    Personal armor:
Welding blankets fiberglass resin, use 2 blankets. Then do another coating of resin on the front and puzzle piece ceramic on the front. Wrap it then coat with Rino liner.
    It will work.
You can size this up as large as you want. (Ballistic panel, shield etc)
Sandbags for home defense. You can also do a fiberglass concrete and pour into moulds.

I’ve been working through this scenario as im a single father of two daughters and stuck in the city for now. I moved as far to the edge of the city as I could based on kids school and family court requirements. Worked extensively on window and door hardening but it only protects against forced entry and most handgun rounds. Making the house stop rifle, even large caliber handgun, is too expensive and won’t look stock. That’s out of the question for me. I was thinking steel plates in a hall closet with safe door. Doable but still expensive.

  • @debluetailfly

Some older wooden houses are resistant to handgun calibers. I know a house that a guy who went kooky shot at with 3 different calibers. One was 9mm, another 45 Colt, and some smaller caliber. Only one bullet made it through a wall. The security door had to be replaced, but a solid core door was unharmed. The house had wooden clapboards which had been covered with vinyl siding. Real plaster on inside walls. Another old house had some kind of old siding like a super thick asphalt shingle; no bullets penetrated completely, probably was 9mm, but not for certain. Still not a good situation to be in. Those walls are not good cover. Most any rifle bullet would easily penetrate. Bruce "buckshot" Hemming got permission to shoot up an old abandoned house in the woods. As best I remember, rifle bullets penetrated several walls with some exiting the other side of the house. For those who don't know, buckshot made a lot of videos, most about trapping. There was some good survival info also. They were not a professionally edited product, and the video quality is not that great, but there is much to learn if you are willing to overlook those flaws. If you get a chance to see them - DO SO!!!

Hi: I read an inexpensive way to make a house “bullet resistant” is to add another 2x4 stud to the existing exterior wall every 16 inches. Make sure there are 2 x 4 footings between each vertical stud. A T 111 sheets to the studs as a secondary skin. Fill the void between the suds and second skin with grade 8 crushed rock.
As a bullet goes through the first layer of T 111, the bullet hits the rock and stops before the second original siding. What ever hole is made, gravity of the gravel fills the void made by the bullet.
May be expensive, but I have seen it done on initial builds.

The Swedish military has come up with bulletproof mobile walls . They have a system where they can make a wall of various widths by using a sliding track . They fill the middle with porcelain or ceramic balls of a diameter larger than the bullets they are probably going to encounter so when the bullet hits and shatters a porcelain ball another just rolls down in its place but is large enough to not come out of the bullet hole in the wall . I dont have access to thousands of porcelain balls but small round river rock can be purchased from landscape supply places and you could cut a small section out of the drywall at the top of your walls and fill them with the rocks , but there would still be the wall studs to worry about . Maybe add a cover of a couple layers of porcelain tile ?

Most homes cannot be defended from inside the structure. Having the tools to build fortifications in strong areas is critical. Most people dont have enough people to really secure their home 360 degrees 24/7 plus do all the work needed to sustain life but thats a separate issue.
Body armor might help keep you in a fight a bit longer but without high levels of care the wounded are just as dead. Armor is not a magic talisman.

I tested a 308 on an old brick shed. Literally played hell on that shed and that was old bricks that I will argue are more durable than newer ones. Put it this way. Say someone is popping in and out of a window in a brick home if you concentrate 8 shots in an area you think the are standing behind the wall they are picking lead out of their azz before you shoot 10 rounds..

If you already have a book shelf you can convert it to be a little bit of true cover.

Has anyone considered how to protect from fire? This is a problem I see no solution to. Even if bullet roof house that’s impossible to breech. They can set it on fire and force everyone out. Solution anyone?

I don't know that there is a really good way to protect a standard residential building against determined heavy assault of any kind. Homes are not built like Maginot Line fortifications or the Cheyenne Mountain Complex. It's very expensive to build like that, and not the kind of structure that anyone wants to live in. Normal people want windows.
With that said, brick construction is certainly more fire resistant, and having a steel roof put on could provide a degree of protection. I'm told they can even result in some premium breaks on insurance in areas prone to fire. Fire suppression systems might also help.
At the end of the day though if you're penned up in your house and there are a sizable number of people outside determined to get in, time is not on your side. They can bring in heavier weapons or equipment. No matter how bulletproof your walls are, a good size excavator will peel that house open like a beer can. Or it can be rammed with a truck. Or failing all else they can just starve you out. Everything a house needs to survive is vulnerable to outside: Electricity, water, sewer etc. Now you can have workarounds and supplies stored, but that only goes so far.
Defending against a seige is generally a losing proposition unless you have help on the way before too long.

No it doesn't. 80% of your body is not covered and it's not hard to aim for pelvis or cranium.

Yes most are not bullet proof. If your house is plank/plaster and lathe its semi bullet proof up to 308. Dont ask how i know.

Hmmm.....in the "old Army" that guarded the Fulda Gap in '80s Germany what you referenced would be called a "DIP" (die in place).
If you're stationary or "fixed" your next stop is the Pearly Gates.
