Great video, I actually had no idea you got one working! Nice!!!! I remember for sure all the trouble you had with those damn things. Nasty suckers, sitting on the Hard Off shelf so cheap... we all know why, now! If I remember correctly, the PSX was the first system to use that XMB interface that was eventually used in the PSP and PS3.
Nice work! I remember those old videos of you having major issues with them and always commenting at Hard Off about them. Those videos taught me a lot about ps2 laser issues.
Wow man! Fantastic stuff. The PSX repair Journey is complete! I remember the one you bought that wouldn't work and then the other one you bought that was all hacked up inside and basically more of a psx shell than a console. This is really cool to see that you got two of them working after all these years. I bet you are psyched! Always cool to see vids from you that harken back to the ol' days man =) Great stuff as always Luke.
Cool, 1st time I heard about these was in the last issue of Retro Gamer, you can see the start of the PS3's and PSP's user interface in it & by the looks of it the slot load drive as well. I know some people have issues with Sony, but it is easy to not remember about the number of specific technologies their team invented/got working during this period. Great that you finally managed to restore them and thanks for the demo.
I remember when these beasts first appeared on Lik-Sang.com and cost an arm and leg. From design point of view the PSX is like a pre-alpha version of PS3. Very nice looking machine.
I will be receiving my PSX in the mail in 2 weeks from now. Excited. Also I seen in the past before that a PSX console did have a DJ mixer software. It was not s disc, it was software already in the system itself.
(RetroGamerAustralia under this alias now, just to confuse you :P) Another great video man. PSXs are really cool. Don't need to worry about your videos being boring man. Awesome stuff as always.
It's a D-Terminal ouput port. D-Terminal it's a japan-only standard for output digital video. PSX support D1 and D2 standard that provide a superb 480p digital image quality :)
that is correct, luke actually didn't mention it but there is a D-terminal on it which is basically Component ( it was just to the right of the S-video jack)
I remember wanting one of these back then. A one in all box that would replace the VHS and my Dreamcast. Maybe it's all for the better. I think we closed down analog broadcasts in 07 here in Sweden. And I had cable anyway, so I needed a separate box for that.
I was recently gifted a well-cared-for PSX, but it won't read discs. Everything else seems to work great. Is this something that is likely to be fixed by simply cleaning the lens, or am I looking at a major teardown? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Great video, as always.
It is possible to change the optical reader, but it's kind of difficult ad far as i know. Only some fat ps2 models have the same optical drive, you'd need to grab one of those. I have a PSX coming my way too, but it's fully working.
Oh, absolutely. I'm a big console collector, and i think this machine is amazing. The only drawback is how easily it can have problems, which is why i won't make it my main PS2 machine. I will still play on it, though.
Maximo is a great game but a pain in the ass too. They even made it difficult to save. Congrats on getting those beasts to work Luke, now sell them quick before they stop working. lol
very nice man i remember your old video on these i believe you didn't have those working in your older video. If i am not mistaken isn't the psx the first console with the xmb layout even before the psp?
Hi Luke, great channel. I just picked up 4 PSXs 3 5100 and 1 5700, All the 5100's boot but don't play discs, my silver 5100 plays CDs and DVDs, will ntsc-us games show up on the XMB? I have no ntsc-j games to test it with. I really want to get buohazard outbreak so I can play on the fan server. Also, the 5700 has a blown 5A 125V fuse that is not soldered onto the psu(a great improvement from the 5100 DESR), if I replace it will the console power on? When I plug it in, I do not get red light and can't turn it on.
Yes, it will indeed start up the XMB first, but when you go to boot a game, it should start Free McBoot because it switches to PS2 mode and as soon as it starts to boot the game (execute the elf) you need to take out the disc (I think this should work). I am not sure how IOP will work, but it should be exactly the same.
You should probably point out that D-Terminal connector the next time you have one on camera. It puts out component video, but since it's basically only used in Japan most people will have never seen one.
Great to see some gameplay on these machines man, I know how much effort you made trying to get one of these consoles to work. Didn't you have four broken PSXs a while back?
ok, thanks for the quick reply. That is true, ebay really does have a lot of scam out there, so thanks for the advice. I'll check with the owner first and decide after.
Actually there is also a D-Terminal output. So it can output an amazing digital quality 480p picture :) The problem it's that D-Terminal it's a japan-only standard...
I have a question about it, if yu are playing any game directly on it, is possible to record on the HDD the gaming??, or the record only occurs when you input a T:V signal??
Wow.I've heard about those beasts but i never seen on working. Thanks for sharing this experience with your viewers Luke. Now i want to ask you something.I'm looking for a Fuji SX-1 (Dreamcast with tv toghether). Are they esay to find in Japan and if so how much do they cost?
Incredible expensive back in the day. I bet they still fetch a fair price - still working. Or better said - working again :P I like the looks of these. So Sony really buggered up on the disc drive department on the PS2 and PSX machines. Wow the menu system is very similar to the PSP and PS3 - was this the first Sony System to feature this type of GUI?
Actually, scrap that, the only two way that I can think of possible is to do these things: get a japanese swap magic disc and use that to load homebrews (uLE) and with that to launch Open PS2 loader OR to physically swap discs from the original game to the exploited one (though with these units, it is highly not recommended).
Any way you could copy the videos digitally off the HDD like for recorded TV shows? I'm looking for a flash based device like that where you hook a PS2 or VCR to it and record gameplay or old VHS tapes to an SD card of USB drive then I can save them to a PC.
I don't own a PSX, sadly. Sorry, I really would've tested that a long time before if I had one. According to PSX-Scene, you can do it just fine as it's based on SCPH-10000 BIOS with slim hardware. All you have to do is install the FCMB from an NTSC-J console to the memory card or install the multiversion one.
is really is a beautiful looking machine, but it also really was constructed badly =/ are these two the new ones? or did you managed to repair those old machines you blew up in the past :D
Saw one of these for $150, thought about buying it until I realized it didn't read disks. Then found one for $200. Didn't read disks. Found one for $250 and another $110 for shipping. Didn't read disks. Found one for $300 with $50 shipping. Didn't read disks. Finally found one for $450 that DID read disks, but I'm too broke for that.
I have a PSX 7000 and when I turn it on the logo screen comes on, but won't go to the xbm screen, the blue ball doesn't even appear in the upper right-hand corner. The screen just stays black. Can u help? Thanks.
Wow I've never heard of this before. It looks awesome! There is one on ebay for about US $350, it's the DESR-5700 version. It's located in South Korea so the shipping is quite high. But I'm wondering if it is a good deal or not considering the shipping fee included?
Fixed a ton of arcade boards for a friend in exchange for a fully working 7100 minus the remote. I updated the dash to English and MB Free McBoot for hard drive loading games. Still trying to figure out how to get it to play mp3 and view jpeg of all freckin thing.
I just snagged one of these 100% working off ebay, (PS1, and both Blue and Silver PS2 disks play great). It arrived today and it survived the trip to Canada without issue. It's a pretty cool rig. There was no remote control and the door is missing off the front but other than that it's perfect. If you have a spare door and remote you want to sell I'd be happy to take them off your hands @lukemorse1
..i'm very lucky then..my psx desr-7700 reads ps1 black disc,ps2 blue disc and ps2 dvd games..i just need to mess with the settings so that i don't need to press Home button everytime I turn the machine On
I don't think so unless you softmod it. Sony having a habit of releasing Japan-only that only have Japanese language menu while its competitors have multi language menus. Weird considering they're the most global player of all the Japanese founded companies.
I remember those old videos when you first picked these up. Never thought we'd see them running again. Great job repairing them!

Well done Luke. I remember watching those old videos. Its amazing you fixed them. You are awesome buddy.
Damn, that is one beautiful piece of hardware. Sony's industrial design really is first class. Microsoft should take note.
Yes, PSX is the first time Sony used the XMB. :)
Quite cool!
Really Awsome that your skills have made it possible to get these up and running! Great video
Very cool you got them both working after all the trouble they've given you, congrats.
(RetroGamerAustralia under this alias now, just to confuse you :P) Another great video man. PSXs are really cool. Don't need to worry about your videos being boring man. Awesome stuff as always.
You completely ignored the best video input on the console...the JP 1 connection, which outputs RGB
Nice! I was just about the ask why a beefed up PS2 was missing a better form of video output.
Man I must get my hands on a PSX one day they are awesome if the work that is hehe. Nice video as always Luke.
I hope these continue to work for a long time, Luke. I always fear optical drive consoles.
That awesome moment when you're looking for some gameplay video from MAXIMO and first what you find is from Luke :)
It's a D-Terminal ouput port. D-Terminal it's a japan-only standard for output digital video. PSX support D1 and D2 standard that provide a superb 480p digital image quality :)
Same here, this didn't show up in my subscription feed.... glad I checked or I would have missed this one.
that is correct, luke actually didn't mention it but there is a D-terminal on it which is basically Component ( it was just to the right of the S-video jack)
I remember wanting one of these back then. A one in all box that would replace the VHS and my Dreamcast. Maybe it's all for the better. I think we closed down analog broadcasts in 07 here in Sweden. And I had cable anyway, so I needed a separate box for that.
Yes. PSX was the first time that Sony used the Cross Media Bar. It was a success :)
Wow haven't seen one of these in a long time man I remember that one you fixed with the burn under the glass on top! haha nice vid as always
Nice video man! Long time since you last talked about those beasts :D
According to the Wikipedia, these models are compatible with PSP games.
Great to see those old PSX's up and running. It can get a bit annoying when people keep calling the original Playstation as PSX.
I was recently gifted a well-cared-for PSX, but it won't read discs. Everything else seems to work great. Is this something that is likely to be fixed by simply cleaning the lens, or am I looking at a major teardown? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Great video, as always.

+Technique San do you think you'll like it?
Oh, absolutely. I'm a big console collector, and i think this machine is amazing. The only drawback is how easily it can have problems, which is why i won't make it my main PS2 machine. I will still play on it, though.
Now you see, if they weren't glass canons and digital wasn't the standard, then these could still be desireale! They look quite capable!
you are a legend mate!
Thanks - great look @ the rarely seen PSX console.
Maximo is a great 3D GnG /Daimakaimura spin-off :-)
ps3 before ps3
Maximo is a great game but a pain in the ass too. They even made it difficult to save. Congrats on getting those beasts to work Luke, now sell them quick before they stop working. lol

one of the best looking console
beautiful looking machine

I think I'd want one even broken, they just look damn cool.
ok, thanks for the quick reply. That is true, ebay really does have a lot of scam out there, so thanks for the advice. I'll check with the owner first and decide after.
Great video again lukeysan. Thanks
Actually there is also a D-Terminal output. So it can output an amazing digital quality 480p picture :)
The problem it's that D-Terminal it's a japan-only standard...
It may have awful problems, but it is a damn sexy machine.
I have a question about it, if yu are playing any game directly on it, is possible to record on the HDD the gaming??, or the record only occurs when you input a T:V signal??

Man I so want to get one some day. Man this is the most sexy thing Sony ever made.
Actually, scrap that, the only two way that I can think of possible is to do these things: get a japanese swap magic disc and use that to load homebrews (uLE) and with that to launch Open PS2 loader OR to physically swap discs from the original game to the exploited one (though with these units, it is highly not recommended).
Thanks for answering, much appreciated :)

Weren't these machines also notorious for overheating?
Yes. That's why the PSOne and ps2 sold more than psx platforms which were rare.
Be neat to have this an the Panasonic GameCube in my collection working or not :)
is really is a beautiful looking machine, but it also really was constructed badly =/
are these two the new ones? or did you managed to repair those old machines you blew up in the past :D
LOL pretty much the XBOX one. Microsoft should've learned from this.
my thoughts exactly haha.
Saw one of these for $150, thought about buying it until I realized it didn't read disks. Then found one for $200. Didn't read disks. Found one for $250 and another $110 for shipping. Didn't read disks. Found one for $300 with $50 shipping. Didn't read disks.
Finally found one for $450 that DID read disks, but I'm too broke for that.
lmao
it's so true. shame they break so easily.
It's no wonder people have had problems with these rare platforms. It never really became a hit.
Phexism do you think you can watch television channels in the United States as long as the PSX DVR's language is set to English US?
I just got one for $40 and everything works on it maybe I'm just got lucky.
I have a PSX and it works with PSX games and CD based PS2 games. DVD based ones, no. I still have it in my closet, but it's not really in use anymore.
Damn Luke I remember when you got your first one which was very yellowed and the weeks of ripping it apart. What was that now, 5 years ago?
I have a PSX 7000 and when I turn it on the logo screen comes on, but won't go to the xbm screen, the blue ball doesn't even appear in the upper right-hand corner. The screen just stays black. Can u help? Thanks.
+Arnold101Knight ok thanks 👍🏾
Gamester81 did a review a few years ago.
Was this the first instance of the XMB (cross media bar)? It's like a PS3-beta
Do you power it off by the power button, or is there a power off option in on screen menue?
How the hell do you manage to store all of this, Luke? crazy but awesome.
Wow I've never heard of this before. It looks awesome! There is one on ebay for about US $350, it's the DESR-5700 version. It's located in South Korea so the shipping is quite high. But I'm wondering if it is a good deal or not considering the shipping fee included?
I'd say that's fair, go ahead, buy it :)
Maximo also exist as a blue disc? Interesting. I have Maximo on DVD. Maybe because is a PAL.
Hi Luke can you go thru some of the settings on screen I havent been able to find an english translation nice vid
I remember seeing these in PlayStation Magazine (PSM) here in the U.S.
I have a DESR 7500 model and it doesn't play games? Do you know how to get it to work?
You sound like Tony Hawk.
The precursor to the Playstation 3?
you are a really likeable & awesome :)
if u were having problems reading the discs update the system software that's all I had to do
Sorta curious but could this by anychance play any games from any region like USA & Europe?
no
midas touch how about with freeMCboot?
Hello, i have a question, how much does a working SFC, PCE, Saturn cost in shops like hard off?
That's sad! It is like all first versions of Playstation. So far "everyone" got issues. =(
Is that beer I see Luke? :D
haha that's funny, one of my PS2's fell off a shelf & would only play PS1 & PS2 blue disks
the curse of the wired controller
I can not understand if they are so expensive why is the failure rate so high?
I wonder if you can install FMCB on it.
Hm, could you run games of an SD card? Interesting.
Fixed a ton of arcade boards for a friend in exchange for a fully working 7100 minus the remote. I updated the dash to English and MB Free McBoot for hard drive loading games. Still trying to figure out how to get it to play mp3 and view jpeg of all freckin thing.
Is the HDD PATA or SATA?
god damn~~how much are they selling for in the paradise of videogames?
I just snagged one of these 100% working off ebay, (PS1, and both Blue and Silver PS2 disks play great). It arrived today and it survived the trip to Canada without issue. It's a pretty cool rig. ..i'm very lucky then..my psx desr-7700 reads ps1 black disc,ps2 blue disc and ps2 dvd games..i just need to mess with the settings so that i don't need to press Home button everytime I turn the machine On
I always wonder where odd parts come from when I order them from Japan. Probably Luke haha
why PSX writting upside down?
play all japan game ps1 ps2
Yes. Play all of that from that region.
the 5700 and 7700 also plays PSP
is there an option on the psx to change menu language to english?
Interesting video, could you please tell me if you can change the system language to english? Thanks.
I meant CX-1.Oops.
Doin it before the xbone
They can but you need to know how to use the command line.
Can you set the language to English?
I don't think so unless you softmod it.
Sony having a habit of releasing Japan-only that only have Japanese language menu while its competitors have multi language menus.
Weird considering they're the most global player of all the Japanese founded companies.
Learn Japanese?
Why do people call PS1 emulators "psx emulator"? It always bugs me.
Its a sexi beast . It looks likes a overweight wii .
You can see ideas on it usead on the psp and ps3 .
Different lazorz
