    Let me come to the technical stuff about electrical connections, as per service manual KTM key lock switch has 3 wires coming out of it Brown(for CDI/BCU/ECU), White(from Battery to other electicals), Black(Ground).
    When key is ON position. White connected to all electrical and Brown is connected to White further connected to CDI together, hence a closed circuit and Black is open circuit.
    When the key is OFF position Brown wire grounded now touching the Black (not the White when it was ON) hence CDI won't receive any power and White wire is also cut off from the other electricals hence it wont draw any power. Hence battery is also cut off.
    Now coming to the kill switch, it is in parallel circuit with your ignition key, so if you use kill switch to cut off the engine, only the Brown and White wire is disconnected killing the power to CDI and now Brown will be now connected to Black. But the White is still connected to other electricals.
    Hence bike won't start even the key is in ON (even though Brown and White are connected in ignition, but since Brown is grounded to Black in kill switch).
    So long story short conclusion is kill is doing exactly same to the bike what key does in OFF to the engine, only that battery is not cut off from the kill switch, this job will be down by key.
    If you are into DIY like me, you can also connect the White wire from ignition to kill switch replicating the key OFF with kill switch.
    Thanks

    Big thing small!!
    Ignition switch cutsoff power supply to all the electrical systems hence no battery discharge.
    Kill switch cutsoff power supply to only to the ignition system and starter system so your bike won't start. But it indeed keeps power on in all other electrical system so there is unwanted battery current discharge and your battery goes low! Vikas sir has always been teaching all us technical aspects of bikes!! Great job sir!!

    According to me kill switch is to be used in case of heavy tragic stop and go condition to save the ignition switch from wear and tear. Ignition switch has carbon particle which tends to wear out in continuous use and thereafter you have to change the entire set including the key itself, what actually happened in my Thunderbird and I have to carry an extra key.

  • @Mechanicgrapher
    @Mechanicgrapher 6 лет назад +45

    1:52 vikas, you were partially wrong with the working of CDI unit. Battery won't send 12v power to the CDI unit.
    The magneto coil unit sends power to the CDI unit.
    So that is reason, that you can ride carburetor motorcycles even without battery.
    Battery has nothing to do with the CDI unit.
    And the rest of things you have said are completely correct.
    Better to study about CDI unit.
    Anyway thanks for the informative video . . .
    Have a good day . . .

    • @Balumaheswar
      @Balumaheswar 6 лет назад +1

      Actually the rr unit have no connection to cdi . rr unit controls amount of current flow to various electrical parts like headlight nd all. cdi gets its power from source coil nd signal pulse from pulsar coil on the coil stator plate . correct me if i'm wrong.

    • @Mechanicgrapher
      @Mechanicgrapher 6 лет назад +1

      Yes. You were absolutely correct. Now let me tell you a quick explanation about the electrical system.
      When you crank the engine, magneto coil tends to rotate. So it generates AC power. It is then divided into two branches. One goes to the RR (RECTIFIER/REGULATOR) unit, which takes care of all the electrical systems such as lights, fuel pump, horns etc and another goes to the CDI unit. So as per you said, CDI gets its source from magneto coil and signal pulse from the pulsar coil on the coil stator plate. So, In a CDI system, a charging circuit charges a high voltage capacitor, and at the instant of ignition the system stops charging the capacitor, allowing the capacitor to discharge its output to the ignition coil before reaching the spark plug.

    Vikas what you said is correct by and large. I agree that if u switch off the kill switch only and forget to take the key out, it will drain ur battery. Thats the only reason why Triumph manual asks users to use kill switch in emergency only. Also in carburetted bikes, if by accident u have turned the kill switch off n u r trying to start the bike with ignition on, the fuel pump will still b alive and will flood the carburettor ! Eventually when u turn on the kill switch, its gonna b hard to start coz its flooded already. But its nothing big. Other than this u can use the kill switch or the ignition switch or the side stand for all i care to turn off ur bike coz wiring diagrams and terminals for all three loops are basically identical.

    • @f.f.s.d.o.a.7294
      @f.f.s.d.o.a.7294 4 года назад

      Use clutch still, since it is possible to have a false neutral: bike still in gear while indicating neutral.
      As an aside, it also helps a little bit starting during cold weather when the fluids are viscous. (Especially important here is starting in neutral, however)

    • @f.f.s.d.o.a.7294
      @f.f.s.d.o.a.7294 4 года назад

      One more point relating to fluid viscosity and starting cold in-gear. Due to viscosity, the bike may still move forward from starter power, even with clutch pulled. This is mitigated by always holding front brake while starting, as well as starting in neutral.

    But i have a question that, in rc 390 even radiator fans keep working if bike is rode for more distance and tempreture is high and that too consume your battery
    If you just turn off your engine and turn on the kill switch.
    So do we have to turn off the ignition also or kill switch is ok for
    instance

    Sir, If the throttle cable snaps, We can engage the clutch, bring the bike to rest and then we can turn of the ignition, right?! So I presume that is not the use of Kill switch! And it doesn't matter, leaving the ignition ON for an hour or two. The battery won't get discharged unless it has weak electrodes. But if we turned off the ignition, the ECU has to energize the embedded CDI unit every time we turn ON, that is why we wait for few minutes to pressurize the fuel rail/solenoid and also to energize the coil after we turned ON the ignition. Even if It is a Transistorized ignition system, the process will be same.

      Dipayan Hazra just ask them to show the old replaced parts. You will find if they are cheating you or not

    @7:00 u start talking to your friend while ignition switch is still on. What really happens is the next time u look at your bike its already gone. Bad habit u want ur bike to be stolen? Then try that. 🤣

    But won't turning the bike on and off too many times eat up the battery?

    • @TakumisBizarreRacingAdventure
      @TakumisBizarreRacingAdventure 6 лет назад

      Well turning the bike on off will also turn the engine on off...so maybe the running engine will recharge the battery...so I think that's okay!

    Can we use a kill switch if signal is for 30 sec because my bike Manual says. Kill switch used at leas for 2min

    • @SwayamPrakashDash
      @SwayamPrakashDash 6 лет назад

      Nani Nani you absolutely can.. Think of like this.. In a car to crank the engine or in care of even pressing the one touch ignition button.. It has 2 stops.. 1 called acc and the other on and then the cranking.. Basically kill switch is the acc mode in a bike.. You'll get idle drain as it's supplying power to the electricals and electronics.. When the kill switch is off you're in On position and ready to crank.. Kill switch on is acc mode in a car and kill switch off with key in on postion means ready to crank.. Additionally in a ecu controlled bike like KTM, dominar etc.. So even with the bike in on and kill switch off the ecu is monitoring all the vitals and components like fuel pump etc are primed and ready but won't work unless the brain tell them to

    • @SwayamPrakashDash
      @SwayamPrakashDash 6 лет назад

      Manual says that because they want you to kill the engine in care you're stopping for 2 mins or more.. 30 secs is a short stop.. If you start/Stop too many times you end up burning more fuel
