I was yelling at the tablet “the sample”!!! Oh well. I’m glad it’s not the worst case scenario. Love watching how your girls are doing with their milk production. Great content!
Thank you for making this video. I have been milk testing my small herd for two years and still learned from you on this video. Since the pandemic there are so many new people in goats videos like these are much needed. Thank you for taking you time to share and teach us.
There’s a bit of humidity but that comes with monsoon season that we’re entering. Luckily most the herd is use to the high summer temperatures but it always takes a toll on milk production.
What treats do you give to your goats when they leave the milking room? I am excited to try milk testing next year and this video helped me understand more about it and makes it seem a little bit less complicated then I thought. Love watching your videos ❤️
The girls get a Purina horse treat “Nicker Makers” is what the bag calls them. Yess! Can’t wait for you to start this milk testing journey, you’ll love the data/feedback you get on your does.
If you have some does that freshens in March and the rest in May you start milk test in March right? Also do your May does also need 8 total tests or it is 8 total for the farm?
Each individual doe needs 8 tests & be 240 days in milk while on test. If I have does kid in March they go on milk test 2 weeks after, so theoretically the March does in milk will be ahead of the May does. However I would never breed for May kids in my area because it’s too hot for them.
What a great video. I am planning to do my first milk testing this year. A couple of questions: does the lab send you the containers with the preservative? Is the ladle 1/2 ounce size?
As far as I’m aware all labs do send the vials with a preservative in it. I use WA DHIA and have been for 3 years now. Yes the label is a half ounce 👍🏼
No when they’re bred they’re still in milk, I dry my does off two months before their due to kid. This gives their bodies a break and allows them to fully prepare for another 305 days in milk.
@@deserthardtdairygoats I’ve been drying off my ewes (mostly because I don’t want to milk when it’s 115-121 outside) but depending on when lambs are born, it only gives me 2-3 months to milk.

Luckily that was a first for me, missing a evening sample. I’m glad you enjoyed watching the girls hard at work😉
I like to watch how different people have different ways they milk test but the same goals are accomplished.
Everybody definitely has different ways of tackling their milk testing days. Forever trying to improve my routine.
What an interesting process! Sorry your temperatures are so high, hope you don't have humidity. I'm always learning something new about goats.

New subscriber here! Going to milk test for the first time this upcoming year so I’m trying to learn as much as I can!
You’re gonna do great! It’s so easy once you get the swing of it all, and it’s such a rewarding feeling to have all that data on file.

Thank you for sharing! 2025 will be our year of Milk testing and hopefully linear appraisal. We had a bad spring or we would be aiming for 2024
Goodluck!! I know when the time is right you will do amazing.
Could you do a video on how to sign up with a lab and drms? We are going to start milk testing in 2024
❤ seems a little complicated, you explained it well
It can 100% seem confusing at first, but it’s really simple I promise.
