That refurbed axe is producing the classic Silver-TONE... as vintage as the Sears, Roebuck and Company catalog she was ordered from! Well done Dane. Most folks would have given up because of the tuner issue. You gave the love she needed with those vintage Klusons and hands-on work. Hats off to you and your buddy who put some swing into that 'ol Silvertone!
I don’t know why anyone would judge you ? Zimms ROCKS ! You’re living the dream!
nice to see guitars brought back to life
This is exactly like my 1st guitar. Silvertone 1448 with the amp in the case. My mom bought it for me used for $50 around 1969. Wish I still had it. Great video!
"Today's string choice..." 🎶 🎵😅😅😅
Crazy that it has no string tree....
I have soft spot in the heart for those things because of several reasons.
1: They weigh almost nothing, and the short scale let's you use .011's or even .012's and still play easy.
2: Those old lipstick tubes are not super hot, and if you play one with the smaller Tweeds, like Champs and Princetons, they don't overload the front end and get too woofy and flubby. This applies to some of the other budget amps of that era as well, such as all of the Valco stuff. Some of those are amazing sleepers.
3: The lipstick tubes have a great clean tone, and the "edge of breakup" thing can be exceptional, depending on your Amp.
Of course, if the
"Satan's Cahainsaw" sound is what you're after, this is not your pickup.
If you really like the guitar, and it suits your requirements, but the intonation is a bit off, there are direct replacement bridges available with adjustable saddles, and they're not prohibitively expensive.
My personal opinion is that Danelectro knocked it out of the park with these, and along with my 1929 Stella parlor acoustic, I think it proves that there are still some affordable vintage instruments out there that play great, sound good, and are lots of fun to have around.
Thanks very much for posting this.
You're probably already aware of this, but David Lindley frequently played the 2 pickup version of this amp in case guitar on big stages with a full band (ElRayo-X). There are several ElRayo-X concert performances from Germany on RUclips where you'll see him with the Silvertone, and an excellent live version of Quarter of a Man from a Reggae on the River festival.
This one is pretty sweet. I love seeing you take these old guitars back from the dead.
I always think there might be a bag of weed hidden under the scratch plate
😂😂😂😂
It's 420 some were
SNL: You can put your weed in there!
I do that all the time. Perfect hiding spot. You want Dankelectro or Silvertoke?
I've refinished USA fenders with a little fiosnter bit area under the pickgaurd from factory maybe a small 4 bowel stash the holes make the guitar lighter and smellier. Lol
Glad you went the extra mile to see the innards!
That's the guitar that Randy California used on the first two Spirit LP's. I have one myself that I use for slide because the action is so high.......picked it up on a household auction for 5 bucks.
My first electric guitar was one of these amp-in-the-case Silvertones.
There was also a red & white model, with 2 lipstick tube pickups, AND, tremolo built into the amp.
A friend of mine had the double pickup model, and together we formed a band called the Silvertones , named for our instruments.
We made some great music with those guitars.
You did a wonderful job of bringing that Silvertone back along with your wonderful playing, those are great instruments 🎼🎸🎼
Who would have thought that all you need for a great guitar is more or less sawdust and glue as these were made of way back when! It's nice to see these classic axes get a second life. Well done Mr. Z!
What a player at the end of this video
Love these old Silvertones, can't wait to see how you refurbish the bass. This is one of the earlier 1448 Amp In Case models, you can tell from the 2-bolt neck mount and diamond pattern vinyl binding. Somebody cut down the pickguard, which is curious, and those knobs aren't original but fit the aesthetic! What a great survivor guitar! It'll probably sing even more with 11s or 12s, as others have said, the 3/4 size takes heavier gauges well.
Cool, Nice little guitar came out of that. I love it ! Thanks for the video.
Thanks for sharing 🎸 & Happy Father's Day ✌
I own several Silvertones, including a couple amp-in-case models - the one shown here, and a red burst full-scale model. I have never seen a clear finish on the fretboard, so I believe someone did that after the fact. It also looks like some of that fretboard wear is under the varnish. And, I have seen the electronics shielded from the factory with that same copper-lined box. Love to see these guitars get some love.
Indeed, I got this model amp-in-case for Christmas 65 or 66 and the fretboard was not laquered. Loved that guitar, but sometime in the earlier 70's decided it would look better in a Tele shape and painted metallic blue - shame on me!
It would be worthwhile to try and find the original tuners which is kinda clunky but still; the rest seems to be original..
Great restore! Love the demo too
Glad you enjoyed it!
Turn the little screw backwards until it drops and then start turning it forward so you can line up the threads.
Great job Dane.... sounds amazing !!!
Thanks a lot!
Cool guitar definitely worth bringing back to playing condition!
Nice work. Sounds great.
Masonite sandwiched around a pine core. Guitars from Neptune. New Jersey, that is - refineries, 24 hour diners, toll roads...
According to what I've read, both the neck and the frame of the body are made of poplar, not pine.
@@goodun2974 We're both right: poplar center block, pine wings
I found one of these at a flea market 30 years ago for $50 with the amp case. My then girlfriend offered $42. She became a guitar trader that day.
THNX for what you do dude
Amazing how nice that is, great sound.👍
Thank you 😋
Good job, another one saved!
Saved another one Brother. Keep up the good work.
Man, I had one of those in High School when I lived in Puerto Rico!! Memories!!
My first Silvertone had the amp built in the case..drove my Mom and Dad nuts with our backyard band 😂
those things are the reason are parents made us play in the garage... great vid my friend
I had the exact same guitar about 60 years ago, and still remember liking it a lot, even after probable 50 different guitars since. I also had a blue Mustang that I had won in a drawing, and remember choosing the Dano for several gigs!! I don't remember if I had the amp-in-case though.
Loved this one great sounding
Sounds good!
I have one of these, it's got it's Amp with it. They pack into the Amp together. It's a shame i'm in the UK or i would have sent you spares. Great stuff Dane, dependable as ever bro.
Brought back to life !
How many of these did we just walk straight by and now cant wait to find one at a garage sale...youre livin that dream for me Zane 😅RAWK!!! 🤘🏼
The best sounding two by four I have ever heard...
I have an old friend named Buddy Whittington that played with John Mayall for 15 years that has a 2 pup version that he'll bring to a gig occasionally & makes it SCREAM. Thanks for sharing, Dane.
Multi-instrumentalist David Lindley often played the two-pickup sunburst version of these on stage with a full band (ElRayo-X). You can watch him playing the Silvertone on a number of RUclips live concert videos.
That thing is begging to be set up for slide. Nice video.
I have an old danelectro he also made the silverthorne guitars they used to be on the back of the Sears catalog
Pretty cool. The rockabilly singer Dexter Romweber used to play one like that.
I think your player there Mr Zimm could make an ironing board sound great! Thanks for the video!
You bet!
nice job, sounds good..
Was the letter date at the base of the neck. Yes it did come with a copper box over controls. Yours looks early as the number of screws that hold your neck on. As I am a happy owner of a third week of Dec. 1962 1448 silver tone.
Mine even has a Neptune ink stamp on
Headstock. At first I didn't know about the little guy. Until I read about the samples shown to sears co. Their on
The guitar in the picture was that little
Neptune guy on the headstock like mine. The story said Neptune was the factory logo. Which I got this guitar from that part of new Jersey. Now I don't use the 1448 case. I use the 1457 Amp in case. as it has two inputs.
And the tremolo effect on Amo. This is 5 watt not 3 watt as in the 1448.
case. Bought my first 1448 in 1967 for $25.00. that was a guitar and amp case. Sold to my band lead player.
This one I will have till I pass. It's perfect for very small venue.
Run fender pure nickel wound 9s
One of the original samples shown to
Sears sold on Ebay years ago. But that guitar was actually bolted and screwed to tripod display. Guitar was in poor shape. No case. But that's how I became aware of the meaning of Neptune ink stamp on headstock.
Reading the book on the history of the Neptune factory in Neptune new Jersey. Who ever ends up with the guitar you fixed can't help but be happy. Zimm you do a service. By all that you do. Thank you.
I had one of these as my first guitar.
When you talk about a one piece washer nut. And he was cheap . They sweep up the metal dust off the floor. that's your sparkle on guitar comes from.
I love old Silverstones the ones I've had sound great
Excellent.
Awesome guitar
Jack the bridge up. Tune to an open chord of your choice. Great guitar for slide. Thank you!
Good rescue...
Those are great Guitars! I have a vintage one myself.
Very cool!
the sound of the fret file against the frets hits different
Nice!!
Wow that's such an awesome guitar I love it.😃👍❤️🔥⚡️🎶🎸
I polish my fret’s.
I like the smooth bends.
Had one when I was a kid with amp in case lol !
Good job! 🙂👍👍
Thanks! 😃
That is definitely a guitar to play blues. Nice job!
It sure is!
Also great for reggae; look up David Lindley and ElRayo-X on RUclips, playing Quarter of a Man at the Reggae on the River festival.
Thoroughly enjoyed watching you bring that beauty back to life! Nice!
That's the exact same model my brother had back in the '70s, it was pretty crusty when he got it.
Awesome Silvertone guitar! I love to meet you someday . I’m a musician also a technician too.!
I am new to your you tube … I like what you’re doing… I have subscribed 👍
New fan here 👍🏻
I'd seriously consider this one as a keeper. If you flip it, it's only going to keep going up in value, and one day you'll regret selling it.
.....ask me how I know. Mine was given to me free of charge in 1983, and I sold it in 1988 for $150. (It went to a good home, the lady that bought it was a player and she lost her mind over it, so that was cool).
I couldn't even replace the pickup for that amount today.
If the bills are eating you alive, try and find something else to sell that's more easily replaceable.
I forgot about another cool little trick that works well if you're not inclined to part with the cash for an adjustable saddle bridge for those things. Some people, Jimmy Page in particular complain that the steel saddles make the tone too harsh and screechy.
So, having said that, measure carefully and drill extra holes on either side of the existing hole for the saddle in the bridge, and using a milling machine or Dremel, or just a small file, duplicate the existing oval shaped hole, one on either side of the one in the center. (make sure they're evenly spaced)
Find another piece of rosewood, cut it to the same shape as the original saddle, and then saw it into 3 pieces. Install those pieces in the new oval holes you just made, and VOILA! You now have a Danelectro version of the classic 3 saddle Telecaster bridge for about 50 cents and 1/2 hour's worth of labor. You also still have the original saddle, and the new holes you just made will hide under the original bridge.
You can fine tune the little rosewood pieces with a file if you need to zero in on the intonation. If any more Danelectros come your way with complaints about intonation, this is quick easy money, and a very happy customer.
CHEERS
and
Hats off!
If you wanted to go to the next level with this, you could drill the adjustment holes in your new saddles all the way through, countersink them and use some black anodized countersunk #4-40 machine screws and matching nuts. The intonation adjustment would now be on top, so no more hassle of string removal just to intonate, and the tiny black screws would be almost invisible. The function would now be hassle free, the look would be about 99.9% original, and the great Dano tone wouldn't be compromised. The screws shouldn't cost more than $1.00, and the customer can intonate without taking the strings and bridge off.
when i was 10 in the 60s your could buy silvertones at sears for 27 bucks brand new and you couldnt play them because the setups were so bad.
Cool ✌️
I believe that neck was repainted, and then they clear coated the fingerboard.
Up there on the dusty end of the fingerboard? I think that's original varnish.
@@hoboroadie, definitely *not* original varnish or clearcoat. Note the play wear on the cowboy-chord positions, with varmish over it.
Your friend is a swinging cat daddy.
3 In 1 oil is a poor choice for lubricating gears because it is designed to react with air and polymerize and form a film or skin against corrosion, which also means that it tends to gum up the tuners. They do make a special oil designed for motor bearings that will not polymerize. Otherwise, just use some synthetic motor oil such as Castrol.
Canola oil..
I agree with goodun2974. Any sort of automotive motor oil is good. 3-in-1 is no good and vegetable based oils get gummy over time.
Zim, how did the mesa studio preamp & the gear in the skb rack turn out?
In fact, the electronic do look factory - at least that's what mine looked like - bought new.
You should jam a little Kashmir on that gitar. If the L Z camp dosent get pissy about it.
Nice looking guitar...sounds okay, tóo...
🎸👍🤙🙂✅🇳🇿
Success
I have the silver colored tuning keys.
The Sivertones that I have had didn't have any finish on the fretboard. That finish on there was unlikely done at the factory.
You was getting a very similar sound to Jimmy Page's Danelectro.
Brendon is good people
Zimm u should have glammed this one up!
"It's an old 1967 silvertone but, you can put your weed in it...."
They came shielded like that from the factory.
Danelectro made these for Sears.
Like Someone in Love!
Great job
So neat!
Any chance of a Ted Newman review or video..
What did you use to "shine" up the frets at 7:40?
It's Chase's "The Home Store" brand furiture polish sold at Dollar Tree.
The clear coat on the neck is definitely not original. You can see a significant amount of fingerboard wear in the cowboy-chord area, and the finish is covering the wear, indicating it got a lot of play time before somebody clear-coated the neck.
Can someone please tell me if that is a metal nut , and if so it must be cut deep to hold the strings at that angle , am i wrong, ( not unusual) 😂
i like it
great playing!
Is Joey the old owner of the locker?
Yes, he is recently deceased
Upgrading the bridge would be a great mod for tuning stability and intonation.
No no no! That vintage bridge and saddle is a part of the sound. Perfect intonation is not required for what this guitar is best at.
To bad ian not closer huh
Wow, they really do look like they're made for that guitar!👍 To bad it didn't work but you only spent $5. But seriously, who's Joey? Anybody know?
If you go back a couple of weeks, Joey was the owner of the instruments and music equipment that were in a storage locker that Zimm purchased. Sadly, Joey passed away.
That headstock kills me. The string angles are bizarre.
I think with the aluminum nut it still actually works, I don't recall any any tuning problems on my brother's unit and it was like that.
@@hoboroadie a roller nut would be the only way to help the tuning stability
@@jblassio, If you look up David Lindley and ElRayo-X playing Quarter of a Man at the Reggae on the River festival (it's on RUclips), Lindley has a capo *directly over the nut*. Can't tell if the nut is original or not, and whether it still has the overly large factory notches, but I'm guessing he may have done something to fill in those slots and is using the capo to press and hold the strings tightly in place.
Your knobs are not original but are period. OG ARE mantel but have a paper with printrd triangle pointer to show low to high.
I really don't understand the hype behind these Danelectro/Silvertone guitars. A buddy of mine had one with amp in the case. One of the worst playing and sounding guitars I've ever played
well you made something outa a nothing guitar. great job. its still a terrible guitar
Clean up all the metal, screws, solder slag, etc off your work bench. I'm glad your not doing any 'work' on my guitars.
I know, right.
So am i.
