David Gilmour doesn't play with technical virtuosity but he is...the most tasteful and melodic guitar player on the planet. His notes, choice of notes and phrasing are impeccable.
don't discount the ability to play single notes with precise intonation and control the way gilmour does. it's not actually technically easy. there's a lot of depth you can pursue in your playing even without playing fast.

Sorrow is one of most underrated Pink Floyd songs. I remember listening to Learning To Fly over and over and then I discovered On The Turning Away and after all when I thought there's nothing more, last track on the album - Sorrow. That was somewhere around 1991 when most of the stuff was recorded on cassettes and I was 13.
And what about One slip? People say Lapse of reason and Division bello are not real Pink Floyd sound, but i think they are the more natural evolution of their sound. And what an evolution, i should say!!! I love those albums, also maybe because i knew Pink floyd with Lapse of reason when i was 14: before, i knew just something from The Wall.
Played live is one of my favourite albums and to those you mentioned I'd add Dogs of war live. Fabulous! Not a big fan of the studio production but played live...

My older brother took me to Ocean City summer of '76 (I was in it for the beach and the pinball on the boardwalk; I think he was just into seeing pretty girls in teeny bikinis :D) and the only music we had was ELO's ElDorado and Wish You Were Here on a cassette. We listened to that tape over and over and Floyd's been one of my favorite bands ever since, and Gilmour's sound and style have always been one of my strongest inspirations playing.

A lot of people could learn to play Pink Floyds songs and do it well on a technical leverl but there is really only one David Gilmour. His feel for the music and his phrasing and ability to find sounds that sound good is outstanding to say the least.
Nice list of great guitarists here. All of whom are very different. Not forgetting Satriani and Bonnamassa. Pinkfloyd wouldnt sound right with Hendrix playing, Van Halen wouldnt sound right with Gilmore playing and so on. So who is the best? We will never agree. But do they all rock? Fuck yeah!

The best things is, is that he never plays his solos the same way twice, its like he tells the same story each time but adds, changes or takes parts away probably on the way he is feeling at the time. Amazing ability, no wonder we all rate him as THE best guitarist on the planet.
Unless you have seen this performed lived you can not even imagine the power that comes from that Fender Stratocaster. The ground beneath you vibrates. He is the master. Period. End of story

If you were lucky enough to see them once it changes your perspective about your own being , music and your life in general . Still takes my breath away . A lot of people can't tell you who their favorite band of all time and all their life is .I CAN . I went to RAH twice on this tour (went on both legs as I knew it could possibly be his last tour). Live its so much louder and powerfull. I have been to hundreds of gigs and no one plays guitar like David Gilmour !
The end solo is the best version I think he has ever done, he seems to just get better! I saw him live at the Albert Hall in Sept 2016 and Sorrow was a high spot. Just sensational! I saw DG last month driving a vintage Jaguar near Hove in Sussex where he lives. I overtook him......what a great player he is, it is emotionally driven, for all their gear, production and effects, it comes from the heart. I was close to the front at the Albert Hall and you could see how much he puts into it - I am a guitarist too. I wish i were half as good as DG. Amazing and very moving.

I understand your sentiment and agree, but your estimate is off by at least a factor of 20. 5 kW might be enough for the stage monitors. The system at that concert was at least 100 kW, most likely more.

The thing with David Gilmour is He's not the most technical of guitar players, But i find him mesmerizing and can't stop watching/listening to his music! Think it's his guitar tone/Phrasing /feel etc. He's just great :)
it's the emotion he conveys with each note, he is very technical but not the most technical, but throw in that emotional bend he does and that puts him over the edge. He captures any emotion with perfect clarity, whatever he wishes to express is done through the strings.

There are no gods. Is Zeus real? Marduk? Osiris? All gods were created by humans to give them comfort in times where they lack understanding of their world. Just as Zeus, Buddha, Jesus and Mohammad are not real so are all others. Man is a creature who lies to himself in order to not be afraid. This version is incredible. Best version of Sorrow for sure, and maybe best ever Gilmour solo. It's incredible that at 70 years old he's at the top of his game. I've listened to this so much that it is my number 1 youtube suggestion every day. What a legend.

There are no gods. Is Zeus real? Marduk? Osiris? All gods were created by humans to give them comfort in times where they lack understanding of their world. Just as Zeus, Buddha, Jesus and Mohammad are not real so are all others. Man is a creature who lies to himself in order to not be afraid. Lose your fear and you lose the need for a god for why would any god wish for it's creation to be afraid?
