They were all good, but the one's that caught my attention are the 22" Meinl Symphonic, the 22" and 20" Paiste Traditional Light Rides, the 20" Sabian Jack DeJohnette Signature Ride, the 18"K Zildjian 1950's with Rivets, the 22" Paiste 602 Medium Ride 1970's, the 20" Bosphorus Turk Ride, the 22" Sabian Ralph Peterson Signature Ride, the 21" Istanbul Agop Jazz Ride, the 20" K Zildjian Constantinople Ride, the 21" Istanbal Agop Jazz Ride with Rivets..... man oh man, I like a lot of your fine cymbal selection Rick! Special thanks to Miss Jennifer, as she sure kept a smile on your face Rick like you've been on vacation or something! I understand as I am fortunately blest with my Sweetie of 50 years! I'll be thinking about cymbals while I'm out back doing yard work...... Thanks and Blessings Rick!
Those Istanbul cymbals are the cymbal sound I’ve been hearing in my head for years but have never been able to find in real life. Absolutely amazing sounding
I'm lucky enough to have a 20" and a 21" Agop Traditional Jazz ride. They're beautiful - but my playing certainly doesn't justify them! Bought the 20" back in 2005 as a 17 year-old and will never sell it. The 21" I swapped for a very rare Paiste and it's lovely - still wonder though!

Great video..what's interesting is tony and elvin and all the leading exponents of the instrument were given new cymbals to advertise or changed companies so cymbals are always impermanent in a way to the artist!
Thanks for doing this Rick! I have the DeJohnette cymbal as well but with no rivets. It's fun for certain situations and is dry as hell. I understand why you put rivets in it. My ear really leans towards the old K's and-- as far as the newer cymbals go-- the bosphorus, istanbul, and Constantinople. My jazz set-up right now features the Turkish NJG (New Jazz Generation) line and I really love them. They're smooth, thin, and dark kinda like the bosphorus or turkish. Thanks again.
Earl Palmer used a 18" Zildjian A Crash /Ride on everything from The Flintstones to Sinatras Swinging Brass ,he reckoned it cut through the mix better than a larger ride.Ive just sold a early 90s one, that despite that tale with Earl using one, i really tried to like it ,but it was too thick/ high pitched and didnt open up easy. Zildjian redesigned that model circa 10 years,but ive not tried it.Thanks for the cymbal comparison.
good presentation affirms some of my cymbal choices. Paiste trad medium and 60s 602 i also have interesting zild A 24' medium that commands alot of low vibe
It's great to do a blind test on those cymbals. My favorite maybe 20" A Zildjian (50's), but I was very surprised about the Meinl, Artisans, Rough Ride and wow, those Istanbuls sound incredible and funny enough that heavy 602 sounds great too!!!! Also interesting how different brands would go great together like some Paiste Trad's with some Sabians and Meinl. :)
that 22 inch paiste cymbal kicks ass. i am not a rich man so i have A custom zildjian cymbals around my jazz kit . i am amazed of how far the cymbal manufacturing has come in the last 40 years. there are many great companies making good cymbals. i think the istanbul is the hallmark of cymbal making, but everyones ears are different, so it is just an opinion.
Rick have you ever tried the Paiste 602 Modern Essentials 22 ride? If so, what is your opinion from a jazz perspective? I tried them in local shop here in Germany liked them a lot. Istanbul 21 SE and 22 Traditional also seem to be good options as far as modern rides are concerned. I have enjoyed watching your video as always, keep it up! Phil
I have not tried the new ones. I have many older ones of all weights and sizes which I love. The Istanbuls will vary greatly from cymbal to cymbal where the Paiste's will be pretty uniform.
