While I disagree with your argument, I respect how articulately you laid it out and how well polished this video is! You’re truly talented at making these essays and more people should be watching your work.
Thank you for the praise you gave reaction channels which we do not too often get. It’s rare to be able to hear this perspective so nicely laid out. While everyone’s viewing experience is subjective, it can’t be denied that some people fall into the same category as you with the active/passive viewing experiences.
It all comes down to two points. The first is how do the majority of people choose to rewatch shows and the second is what metrics do studios use to determine success.
I don’t believe the rewatch view of a show/movie is what will push it over the needle to be considered a success. That’s decided right upon release like the box office for theatrical releases and week 1-2 streaming hits.
As for rewatches, I can only speak from my own subjective experience on it: I recently did a rewatch of My Hero Academia by watching it on CrunchyRoll. I never even considered to watch a reaction on it even though I run a reaction channel and will occasionally watch some myself.
I think there’s a specific niche of folks like us who enjoy reaction videos that don’t represent the larger mainstream non-internet dwellers on YT. Those mainstream viewers (actual normies) are the folks that make up the majority of streaming hits for different programs. I actually purchased my own personal subscription of CrunchyRoll because I was sick of always sharing The Normies login lol.
The mark of a truly good show that deserves those additional streaming hits is one that will make you go back and rewatch in its entirety. Those shows deserve it. Most of the time RUclips/Instagram/TikTok will post the big highlight WTF moments anyway, in their entirety, that most people will watch as a market sub. Whereas with reaction channels, there is at least some back and forth engagement going on between the viewer and the reactor.

I 100% agree. I'm also an avid blindwave and thenormies watcher and they've completely taken over any rewatching I would've done otherwise. Hopefully the added marketing value reaction channels bring is enough for the larger corporations to feel like it evens out in the end or we get some kind of content id system that lets reaction channels react to any content they want with a standard cut for the original creators.

Is what they do and the other reaction channels to TV shows and movies safe to do?

Your argument is pretty weak. It’s like saying reading half the pages in each chapter of a book is re-reading the book. While simultaneously acknowledging and ignoring the reactor’s reactions and thoughts as part of the experience.
Also your personal experience alone doesn’t have enough impact on the market to qualify reactions as substitutes. Especially in the context of fair use where every branch of those four factors need to be considered.
I’m sure there’s other people who do the same thing, but reactions primarily became as big as they are on the back of GOT’s Red Wedding episode. Because people wanted to see people reaction to that episode. Not so they can rewatch the episode and ignore the reaction. You can’t separate those two aspects.
The problem in the reaction community is channels who show the entire episode or movie. Those are the market substitutes and should be the actual focus of videos.
Especially because it doesn’t seem like you are trying to argue that reactions aren’t fair use? In which case what even is the point of this? Just talking to talk??
