I am Nigerian and i can tell you that the kidnappings are conducted and aided by people in authority. There are zero forest in most of the areas they call forest especially in the northern part, the government has refused to label these gun men as terrorist and has never brought any one to justices rather there keep pardoning them and negotiating with them.
These men go in and clear out an entire town and once they are done, government forces and politicians show up for the cameras, speaking grammer and talking tough instead of taking action.
Everything is mostly political, religious, ethnical and tribal. Nothing is very done for country and humanity.
You just typed what I had in mind.
That's horrible to read. If that was me I'd probably be trying to leave for a different country, but even thinking that feels like giving up & quiting on your home...but in those circumstances I don't know what else you can do. Hang in there, hopefully things start to turn around

That’s very disturbing.

🇨🇳🇰🇵 I've been to the border between the PRC and NK two months ago. The landscape was surreal: farmers working on the crop fields with animals, no sign of a car, people moving on horses, animals, bicycles, and it was -5 degree.
The chinese side was modern, cars everywhere, lights, the exemplification of Chinese modernity. The NK was like to watch back one hundred years.
The city of 丹东 Dandong 🇨🇳 offers a sight on the NK side: houses don't even have windows and are dark during night. Some kilometers east from Dandong there is almost nothing. There are fences, armored guards, sometimes on horses and, ironically, modern 360° cameras.
It is the best example of, whatever tankies say you, NK is not a utopia. It is a Orwellian dystopia at best. And it is not 1984, but the Animal Farm.
With the increasing isolation and strangle-hold China's government has on its economy and people, North Korea might very well be China's future under Xi.

Kurt Vonnegut is credited with saying “We'll go down in history as the first society that wouldn't save itself because it wasn't cost effective”... and the more "once in a lifetime" events I live through, the more accurate Vonnegut's words seem.
The issue I have with this statement is the large majority of " once In a lifetime events" that happen aren't justified by economics but by ideology

Can't be worse than Trumpoids.
Could you imagine being the Dominican Republic, themselves a developing country,(but not underdeveloped like Haiti) if you don't help at all you can have starvation and lawlessness on your doorstep(sort of similar to now) with people desperately trying to cross illegally in large numbers; BUT if you open the borders, your own state would collapse under the financial and resources burden/chaos that would ensue. Dominican Republic already has 11 million Haitians on their shores, practically, considering its the only working government there.
@@Snappy650 the sharks will not hunger for a while
@@apjpisared And now you understand why the DR is investing so much in building a wall to physically separate themselves from Haiti.
They’re practically a superpower compared to the country they share an island with, and they do not want to be dragged down with Haiti.
That’s not me casting judgement, they absolutely would be dragged down if they tried to intervene in Haiti.
Must be hell incarnate in North Korea. Crazy.
Communists
Lies.
If I hear is 1 million times finer better, safer, more prosperous and stronger than Nigeria.
Good God Almighty… it’s genuinely difficult to comprehend the things going on in North Korea that Simon described are really happening…
Like, outlawing the imitation of another country’s slang? Publicly executing teenagers for watching K-dramas? A regime callously letting its people starve while imprisoning them within their own country’s borders? If a novel or a tv show depicted something similar to the atrocities mentioned above, I’m pretty sure it’d be criticized and lampoon for being “outlandish,” “over the top,” or “unrealistic.”
And that’s probably the most disturbing part. This isn’t something from an edgy young adult dystopian novel or Saturday morning cartoon, it’s really happening. Kim Jong Un is really insane and cruel enough to do something like that.
The most scary part is I dont think he is insane at all.
He is pragmatic from his own perspective.
As is everyone else in the country, from top to bottom, just to survive.
This just shows how far and how low humans can sink...
Under the "right" circumstances there is "evil" in all of us...
The lesson in this for us, is that we see and observe....and learn about us selfes as humans, so that we eventually can build a better future for us all on this little blue planet.
My prayers to the people of North Korea🙏
They are supposedly doing so. Where is the evidence? Other than just fanciful propaganda.
Communism always goes into a totalitarian purity death spiral
Also that novel would be banned and you'd be executed for watching it haha
The worst part is that it is literally the plot of Divergent. They hammer down any nail that sticks up so thoroughly that people who are actually normal (from our perspective) are considered extremists and executed in secret. Even worse is that Trump is trying to do the same kind of dystopian s*** in his "Freedom Cities", which is ripped directly from Handmaid's Tale. That's literally on his website right now, and I don't think that is lost on anyone who actually reads what Trump plans to do. Kim Jong Un is pretty much the same as the leaders of the US in Divergent, and now Trump is trying to be the president of the US from the Handmaid's Tale. Dystopias are becoming very real now. That's terrifying.

This channel is one of the most important things in broadcasting right now, zero opinion, just facts. remember when the news was like this pre 1990 ?
There has always been bias news just like how there has always been unbiased news.

This channel has become my go-to for tracking world events. Factual, unbiased reporting is exactly what we need more of in this world. Keep it up Simon! Awesome as usual!

Hey Simon, Armenian here, thank you for covering Nagorno-Karabakh. While the world was busy with Ukraine or Israel, there has been a brutal war. Atleast we are now distancing ourselves from Russia, which might bring more challenges,

When Armenia was committing ethnic cleansing of Azeris in the 1990s, the world turned a blind eye. Why do you expect the world to care in 2024 when it's the other way around?
It’s a really horrible situation, im sorry to hear how it’s turned out. I’ve been paying close attention since 2022.

Whenever you think you have it bad, just imagine how worse it must be to live in North Korea.
That's been my way of coping with my life since middle school. I learn about things like that both for educational purposes and to keep myself sane. It's a very unhealthy coping mechanism that I don't recommend.
I’m a recovering heroin addict but also passionate about history and geopolitics (interesting combo lol) but I always say the same thing when things got bad for me, I’ve been through A LOT but there’s so many on this planet who have it far worse than myself, basically everyone in NK included..
Yes. Very worse

The changes in food prices in North Korea are interesting to me. I was just comparing those to my local costco - the rice is actually about the same price here as it is in North Korea. But, the cooking oil there is about 7x more expensive. So in other words, it sounds like North Korea basically has barely any large-scale advanced food production facilities for things like producing cooking oil and such. In terms of food, their economy sounds like it used to operate like a lot of third world countries, but now it's even *worse* than that. Pretty crazy.
It's been fixed already. They get grains and those things from Russia for producing more shells than the west can dream of. It's crazy, but sad.
same for america vs europe/uk
Only 13% of their soil can be used for agriculture.
This, combined with the "Juche-Ideology" (complete selfsustainability) does not make sense at all.
The juche ideology is less to blame I think. The biggest contributor to their food insecurity and lack of import/export is due to heavy sanctions.

There’s no hope for Nigeria
There were a couple of coups last summer in Africa in the francophone countries ( ex French colonies) that is because of the political and economic situation that France put on them, such as the CFA, however Nigeria’s problems and other anglophone countries are not because of Britain, it is because of cruel and selfish leadership since independence in 1960
Nigeria is a failed state
Africa is one big fail
I do wonder what would happen if Kim’s regime collapsed and we had a Berlin Wall kinda thing in Korea
Some analysts have done that thought exercise, and the consensus seems to be: it'd be even worse. A power vacuum in such an autocratic society would be nightmarish, not just because of infighting among Kim's would-be successors, but also because both China and the US would move in to secure their interests, primarily North Korea's stockpile of nuclear weapons.
War footing between US and China, millions of innocent North Koreans trapped between them. The greatest refugee crisis of the millenium.
@@disalazarg Would be less U.S interests and more South Korea's. The U.S might help as an ally, but Americans are pretty touchy on the idea of the U.S being involved anywhere after the waste of life and money its misadventures in the Middle-East have been. China, however, has a collapsing economy (no matter what their desperate propaganda might say otherwise) and so would descend upon it pretty quickly.
@@Vaeldarg... you really think the US will let North Korea's nuclear arsenal to fall in the hands of a warlord that'd most likely just sell them to ISIS? They'd sooner nuke the country themselves.
Russia's reportedly sending huge amounts of grain to North Korea, in exchange for shells. Shells that are of decent quality and incredibly cheap because they're made with what amounts to slave labor.
Excellent research and presentation, as always. But possibly even grimmer than usual.

The fact that societies like North Korea can continue to exist indefinitely never stops being depressing. We are living in a psychopath world
As someone who lived in Eritrea...who has similar laws, its not that bad. I mean objectively it is terrible, but you get used to it. There is nobody around you who has it better, so you just take it as part of life and it becomes the norm. The problem comes when people start to see this is not normal from watching TVs or news from neighbouring countries.
Well... we live in a society that glorifies psychopaths so unfortunately nothing new.
Really makes you wonder. If North Korea is such a lovely place like tankies claim, why aren't people allowed to leave freely? Sure America isn't perfect, but I won't be murdered if I try to leave, I can walk across the border and walk right back in as I like.

I've seen at least one video here on RUclips unironically make that assertion.
The arguments mainly just boiled down to "nuh-uh, it's good actually, according to the government and people who have been there."

Situation Report:
shet is still all fecked up
It will always be f up because there are limited resources on the planet and endless wants by mankind
I think it's telling about the state of the world when Warograpics becomes Simon's most popular channel. That being said, these events are not only important but also part of history now. It is just as important as his other work. I just feel it's concerning, albeit slightly hopeful that people are becoming more aware of war than they have been in a long while. It means people are, among other things, concerned with the future of this place we call home.
It would be great if you could provide links to the reports you are referencing in either the description or a pinned comment.
Thank you Simon and his writers. I look forward to the Situation Room, and always come away learning new Geo-political information I can't get in the US any other way.
North Korea tho, the way Kim is handling his country is literally insane. When he has starved his people to death, who is going to work those farms, run services and untilities, work his war-machine and the factories building Kim's outsized arsenal?
It almost seems as if Kim is trying to destroy his regime and country utterly... a slow, ugly suicide by tyranny.
Literally the first Warographics i needed caffeine before. Saw the title, i know the gist, but that's a grab your caffeine and sit down
A) With North Korea, there's oppressive control and then there's active and total collapse of all development as a nation. What does this achieve for the Kims? Just their direct personal survival and nothing else? There's no technological progress, no geopolitical improvement, and certainly no economic benefit that comes from this level control and isolation.
B) As for the Nigeria stuff, ya know, just as a general rule, if your ideological movement has so little popularity and moral principles that you feel the need to steal children to fill your army's ranks, maybe it's not a good ideology. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
God bless you for reporting on Artsakh.
Grim news on all fronts. I can only hope for better future for Nigerians. And hopefully Karabakh Armenians can find new homes for themselves in Armenia. It’s always depressing to hear about North Korea, didn’t expect it could get worse there.
It should be noted that an estimated 500000 Armenians were expelled from Azerbaijan, while around 750000 Azeris were expelled from Armenians lands and Karabakh. The results of the 2023 offensive and the 2021-2022 Azeri incursions into Armenia proper were twofold in that Armenia could no longer rely on Russia to uphold their peacekeeper/security guarantees and it could no longer rely on Azerbaijan to uphold the treaties it signed just 3 years ago. This is why it is imperative that Armenia arms itself to try and limit the power disparity and dissuade Azerbaijan from invading Armenia.
I think it should also be noted that the modern Nagorno-Karabakh conflict was initiated by Azerbaijan.
It should be noted that Armenian isolation is a result of it's own actions. It was convenient to support Russia's narrative in it's war against Ukraine, but as soon as these "peacekeeping russians forces" wouldn't move a finger, Armenia is conveniently seeking western aid.

north korea's motivations might be even darker than you allude to. if they have an issue with not having enough food, there are two ways to fix it. one is to create or import more food. the other is to have less people. if their population were cut by half for example, then the food shortages wouldnt hurt as much. starvation isnt a symptom, its the goal.

Watching the news has become really depressing in the last couple of years!
More than a once in a generation opportunity to support Armenia, it’s closer to once in a century. After Turkey prevented the implementation of the Treaty of Sèvres, the west gave up on the Armenian state in the wake of the genocide, and is only in the past decade started to rectify that.

Are sources listed anywhere other than in the video? P.s love the show, just curious
What I've learned as I've gotten older and seen the world change, it's up to people to fight for their own country. Outside help can be useful, but if the people themselves don't feel that fear and survival instinct, then nothing comes of it. Even those who try to 'help' will face loses.
By the end of this I just felt so tired. How much better would the world be if humans used all this energy to build ourselves up instead of trying to upheave the world.
We've watched Simon Whistler slowly transform from Internet gadfly to arguably one of today's best online news sources. Who would've thunk it?
Thank you for talking about Nagorno Karabakh. And it really was sad to see. And it was made scarier considering that my sister was adopted from Armenia and likely would have been pulled into the war had she been there.

I'm not excusing the empires that much of Europe had at one point but you do wonder politically how much more stable they may have remained and in relation to Nigeria how much more effective thier military would of still been
I think that most of us know the answer to that question, but no one will say it out loud. What happened with the food situation in Zimbabwe when the emigrant operated farms were (violently) ‘re-possessed’ could be another example.
I understand why people have this opinion and honestly it makes sense from a certain perspective. It almost seems like things were better/stable during the colonial period in many African nations, and they were... for the people in power.
The only people that we knew of were the ones within the sphere of colonialists power.
The ones in urban areas, farms, construction projects etc... essentially the ones who worked for the colony and its interests.
That, however, was not the majority of the population.
The rest of the people (if they were rebellious and stood in the way of the interests of the colony) were brutalized.
Land/resources/livestock were taken or destroyed, people were starved, children were taken to be "reeducated" and converted etc... and that usually was by collaborators (other native groups who were paid to "clear the problem")
But the victims didn't speak the colonialists language, the outside world didn't know they existed and even if someone caught wind... there was some deniability.
It only seemed better because the majority of what happened was in the dark. It was only stable for the very few who worked for the powerful... yes, it's still not great in many of those countries, but its certainly not worse.
Simon. Serious question.
Why have you not covered the issues in South Africa?
he did an episode on the power crisis a while back
@@alexalexalex92And for those of you who didn't watch it, the "power" involved here is electrical... not exactly obvious on a channel called "warographics"
The story on Nagorno-Karabakh probably should include the fact that a new possible proxy war between India who is arming Armenia and Pakistan that is arming Azerbaijan is developing, India is even discussing putting a military base in Armenia. In addition you have the bizarre situation of enemies Turkey and Israel both strongly supporting Azerbaijan with weapons, the reason Israel does is Azerbaijan is enemies with bordering Iran and grants Israel close access to spy on Iran and possibly use Azeri airfields to refuel if they attack Iran. A conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia could splinter Turkey from NATO and/or start a conflict between nuclear armed India and Pakistan.
Please include chapter timestamps in future episodes

Necromancy

Simon, are you wearing glasses without lenses?
Mr. Kim, I see one critical flaw in your plan: if you're not giving your people enough food to even live, and illegally obtaining more food has the same punishment as rebelling, then eventually someone is going to rebel, because a chance at successfully rebelling is better than certain death. At this point, your people have nothing to lose and everything to gain from breaking the law. Read the story of the demise of Qin Shi Huang and the first imperial Chinese dynasty
