Just play Ys period. Seriously, how has it taken the gaming community so long to realize how fun these games are? If you like Kingdom Hearts, the Tales series, or Zelda... it's highly likely you'd enjoy Ys.
The word shall continue to be spread, and maybe one day...it shall happen! Or Adol is put into Smash and people complain about another anime swordfighter.
The only issues it has : silent protaganist, and the excessively outdated visuals. If ys10 gets put on unreal 4/5 and at least looks modern enough to compete with a bamco rpg i think they could significantly increase sales. Also simultaneous global release.
It just never spreaded beyond Japan for some reason. I never heard about Ys too before a couple of month ago when I decided to play all games I've missed out on over the years. I only found it because I actively searched for jrpgs. Not sure if it's a marketing issue or if it simply wasn't that popular. Though I could iamgine that the first Ys games with their strange bumping system is the reason why it got lost over time because it propably wasn't very popular. If you have 3 games in a row with such a strange combat system then most people won't bother to look at the following games because they expect them to be the same. That's exactly why I keep up even with new games of a series I never played. Because you never knew if the forumalr wil be changed to your liking or not. I don't like the Tales gameplay so far. But who knows, maybe the next game fater Tales of Arise will be the kind of game I like.
@@morriganrenfield8240That might also be a problem. People's inexplicable obsession with photorealistic graphics. Maybe I'm just old but I see absolutely nothing wrong with Ys 8's graphics. It looks absolutely great and stunning to me. It doesn't need to look realistic for me. Games not reflecting reality is an aspect that makes me like them in the first palce. A compelling story, very fun gameplay and amazing music are far more important to me than more polygons and pixels. Not only do these kind of games cost far less, they are also far less cluncky. I couldn't bear with God of War 2018's slow gameplay after playing Ys VIII. Graphics won't be able to cover for the lack of fun and fast gameplay for me.
I'm playing Ys Seven right now and I adore it! It's my second Ys game after Oath in Felghana and I'm really appreciating how they used Seven to really expand and add layers to the foundation that the Napishtim engine laid. The first dungeon was great! I do love the low poly aesthetic and Ys does it well enough so I have no complaints on that front. I have it on 4k 6p fps and I gotta say UHD Lowpoly is a new fetish I didnt know I had.
@@CommRio Also, when you said one of the characters in this story was your favorite, who was it eventually? I've finished the story and can thing of a few. This game's overall narrative was certainly a highlight to me.
@@PewPew_McPewster So I of course think that Adol and Geis were great returning characters but it was Aisha that I really liked most among the cast. I think she has a great arc and her interactions with the rest of the cast were excellent.
@@CommRio oh yeah. Aisha's arc was definitely best in the game. I asked because I ended up liking Cruxie and Mustafa's subplots, as well as Tia and Maya's. I ended up liking Cruxie a lot, and though I knew what they were going for emotionally with Maya, hoo boy did they execute on it really well. May have cried at the end.
I agree. It took me around 65 hours to finish Ys VIII. I was never the type of player who aim to %100 and explore every nook and cranny in open world games. But for some reason with Ys VIII I found it fun and rewarding.
There was a slight presentation issue when I was playing the PC port. When in the house of the Merchant who's daughter want the gems 2 times when I was dodge rolling to move faster down the stairs, I clipped through the wall and fell to my death/gameover.
Great review. I actually had to buy the old psp of a friend to play this game back then since I didn't have one. Played all the of games rest on pc. A funny thing about the game is that people are obsesed that the cycle that Altago was stuck into, with the dragon warriors and rul-ende, is a world spanning thing even when the game repeats multiple times that only affects the land of Altago. That created a lot of confusion after YsVIII ending
I think that cycle could certainly be mined for potential future content in Ys, but yeah they very clearly mentioned how it only affected Altago, so I guess people need to work on their comprehension skills.
I’ve been binging the series and finish Memories, 8 and 9 since they’re all on ps4. My next one will be 7. I just wish they would port them to ps4 as well
I playes Ys 7 and had a blast. It was my formal introduction to the arpg genre. It was the game that made me fall in love with that genre. Music and story were absolutely amazing.
Dogi looks so dopey and clumsy in this interaction. Although I do like that the size of his arms match the rest of his proportions, compared to how his character model was depicted in Ys I.
I'm planning to play all Ys games (I've played 1,2, 8 and I'm playing 3 rn) but I can't seem to find this one I have a Ps4 and a steamdeck, are there any official releases for these consoles? Thank you
Should I play it on my PSP portable Japanese console or my PS5 instead? Btw, completely new to JRPG games. I already bought Bleach Soul Heat 7 and might wanna get Legends Twin Heroes. I dont like the type of games that you have to wait for the enemies turn to hit the enemy back like Pokemon, ya kno? Please answer honestly. Thank you.
Mild spoiler regarding mob trash and quests. You'll have 999 pieces of garbage in your inventory from the first area of the game. You'll probably sell it to buy stuff. thinking that it's trash and you'll never need it again. That is, till you reach a random flower girl toward endgame that needs 100 pieces of said trash from the first area for her quest. (just_f*ck_my_sh*t_up.jpg) Now you have to go farm early game trash mob drops to complete late game quests.
Probably my personal least favourite Ys and even so, I think it's a fantastic game. This series is the absolute pinnacle of action game _pacing_ - there's never a moment that feels like padding in this entire series, everything you do feels like progress at all times. I wish other devs would try to learn from these games.
This was my first Ys game....and i found it quite boring, almost gave up with the franchise after finished it. Good thing i tried after the (way) better game (in my opinion) Ys Origins, game that i loved.
Seven is my least favorite game in the series, the Napishtim games were so much better and they've even aged better. Eight is a masterpiece and I guess the longest one so far. Can't say for sure yet, I'm about sixty hours in nine right now. Enjoy your first playthrough!
I can understand why people might not care for Seven compared to the rest of the games even if I don't share that feeling. I am enjoying it thus far (currently in chapter 4) got a ways to go yet, but I look forward to being able to discuss it in the future.

Nice review really great game and music superv. First played it on the PSP and then on Vita (own the PC version as well)
yes finally iv been waiting for your review for this game, thanks man, i just download the game yesterday for pc, and so exiting to play it now👍
Enjoy!
Nice video. About Ys VIII, it's a really long one. It's longer than Seven and IX combined (and maybe you could add another game or two).
Yeah I've already started Ys VIII and I've nearly put more hours into it than any previous Ys game, and I know I'm not close to being done yet.

Huh well not surprised there are some bugs. I'm curious if that is in the original PSP version or if it was introduced during the PC porting process.

there is a HD textures MOD for ys seven

The Ys series (at least in the past) has been quite good when it comes to satisfying length of games without overstaying their welcome
The Japanese are really onto something with their damage sponge bosses. Just one more similarity between ys and monster Hunter.
