To be clear, pretty much all of Black Sabbath’s songs on their first 4 albums would be in the realm of “heavy psych” or “heavy psych rock”, but none of them sound like Planet Caravan.

ozzy sang through a Leslie speaker that was made for a Hammond B3 organ . The Leslie is a 2 speaker unit but the top speaker spins giving that under water sound
I literally have that song on replay everyday they are really underrated who are from SF and that’s coming from someone who lives in the Bay. I highly suggest he checks Fresh Air out by QMS.🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻😤🔥🔥🔥😮💨😮💨😮💨
They ran Ozzy's vocals through a Leslie rotating speaker cabinet for the vocal effect. Pantera has a great cover of this. It's the last track on far beyond driven.

Geezer Butler (the bassist) is a master lyricist. Severely under-rated. Now that you've heard a bunch, I will highly suggest Wheels of Confusion (including The Straightener), Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, and Megalomania.

Sounds like a FLANGER or PHASE SHIFTER on the vocal. Some of the old tape echo's would warble or flange the repeats. Or some times they would drag a finger on the edge of the tape reel (the flange) hence the name

Geezer wrote most of the lyrics with Ozzy chipping in a few. You say psychedelia. But what you're really hearing is Iommis love of jazz coming through. If this track blows your mind then listen to Symptom Of The Universe from the album Sabotage. One of the heaviest, most metal tracks ever put to tape and a huge influence on loads of later metal bands. Like I say, it's a very heavy tune, but then you hit the outro section and it becomes something else entirely. Absolutely beautiful and for my money probably Ozzys most impassioned vocal ever recorded. Give it a listen.
I strongly recommend listening to this album in it’s entirety. Each song is is placed masterfully on the record. No song should be skipped. Electric Funeral and Fairies Wear Books are often overlooked and I don’t understand why.

This came out when I was in my teens. One of the first times I got high was listening to this on a friends fathers’ high-end stereo - a hot summer night laying under the stars in their back yard. Magical. It still is.
If you like Tony’s playing in this one you should definitely check out some of the little instrumental 2 min songs on their early albums. My personal favorite is Orchid, but they are all beautiful and really shows how great Iommi is

With Black Sabbath the melodies, the riffs and awesome rhythm section puts them above all bands--above Zeppelin-Rainbow-Blue Oyster Cult, they are unmatched. It was the perfect union of anger, disappointment and the discovery of drugs.
ask any of the top 50 artists today to drop a jazz cut into their album. Maybe four can do a job anywhere like this? I bet 10-15 could do it in the 60s and 70s
If you like this, you need to hear Sleeping Village from the first album, it is part of the intro suite that evolved into the heavy blues/metal monster that is Warning. The suite is: A Bit of Finger/Sleeping Village/Warning. Tony Iommi lets loose in Warning but the intro before is quite atmospheric and part of the menacing vibe of their debut album. Try it sometime, it will blow you away! Enjoy. 🎵🎸🎤🎶
Agreed. All respect given to Sabbath for creating the song, but the Pantera version is one of the few times the cover far surpassed the original. It's near a perfect song, and I can't name one other Pantera song that I actually care much for.
Did you know the bass player Geezer, writes most of the lyrics. But of course it OZZy's interpretation of those words that brought them to life

The personification of Mars is great, yes! I always see this as a long flight through space, with a coffee house kind of vibe.
You have to get below the surface, and put aside the heavy metal label, to really explore the incredible depth of Sabbath.
