You are correct but now they are using the same abuse tactics to gaslight Tina and her fans to come up with some narrative that Ike wasn't mentally or physically abusive as Tina has claimed.

That’s exactly how she is remembered. There are certain people saying stupid things, yes, but overall, when people talk about Tina, prior to her passing, they acknowledge her for her strength, humility, and hard work. The abuse typically gets talked about because it’s seen as a part of her story of survival. But her career after Ike is what people talk about since is shows perseverance and a passion goes one’s craft.
Tina didn’t wanna talk about it despite the fact that she inspired people to leave their abusive marriages but she became a living legend and she should have been acknowledged as such. It took too long until the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame finally inducted her as a SOLO ARTIST. But everyone wanna talk about “Ike, Ike, Ike!” 🙄😕

I'd argue that Tina IS the blueprint for the standard we have for all the current pop girls. Nowadays we expect female popstars to put on these concert tours full of stage show, choreography, and deliver vocals, all of which Tina did and popularize in her prime. Tina will always be the pioneer of the modern day pop act and that demands the respect from all of us. Long live the Queen of Rock and Roll

Everytime someone is talking about Whitney they also bring up her drug addiction. I mean look at the tabloids after she performed for Michael Jackson in 2001, the media and public bullied her even though she contributed so much to the music industry.

People lack compassion, especially towards black women. Our culture in general picks and chooses who they’d like to see as victims. Black women aren’t given the compassion and understanding that they deserve.
This is unfortunately so true! Same with Marilyn Monroe, when people talk about her, the most popular thing that comes to mind is of her death instead of her success. So sad to see these wonderful talented women get degraded :(

I am really appreciating the content that focuses on eras prior to "contemporary era". Anything prior to the 2000 are so hidden from popular media so this was really insightful!

The Beyonce and Jayz one was more disrespectful, seeing as Beyonce herself has cited Tina Turner as a musical influence when it comes to her music. Then she goes and slaps her in the face with her husband's line on her song, it doesn't matter if she herself didn't say it she mimed it while Jay z rapped it which is just as disrespectful, how can you say your influenced by someone then go and disrespect them in that manner; I am sure if other singers referenced Jayz cheating on Beyonce in their song she wouldn't be happy about it, but there she is in the video smiling next to Jay z as he is rapping that wtf.

The world is really cruel to women, it’s truly sad.
I really respect that Tina doesn’t glamourise anything she’s been through and is quite frank about how terrible that was for her. Even being as honest in saying she has known so little love and so much pain in her life and that she doesn’t feel any of it was worth it. There is no happy ever after or glazing over the past for her, sometimes life is just cruel.

Personally, I was *very surprised Beyoncé okayed Jay-Z's verse in "Drunk In Love". With Tina being her biggest inspiration next to Michael Jackson, I thought she'd be more sensitive to Tina's history.

It doesn't help that Tina consistently has exploited her own pain for profits. She has releases books, a musical, a movie and documentary. She has been talking about her relationship with Ike for almost 40 years and they divorced in 1978.

The fact Tina had the option to sell the rights to her music based on her previous issues with ike is incredible and to be given 50 million for your iconic work is even more incredible. It's great that she found a man who loved her so much he gave her a kidney.
Big props for making this video and calling the abuse for what is actually is… ABUSE. Not something to be sensationalized and used as a continuous tool to dehumanize for some catchy lyrics or the media to recycle.
The amount of struggles this woman has gone through her life time yet the way she still continued to be this successful is astonishing!
My grandma had me watch the What’s Love movie because she has also been through an abusive marriage in her past. I was so young, too young to be watching it lol but I’ve always seen her as a huge inspiration growing up. She is so much more than what she’s been through and it doesn’t define her, just like my grandma. 💕

A real icon I didn't know much about this until I grew up watching "What's Love Got To Do With It." I truly enjoy her music and I'm glad she is happy now.
I learned that Tina’s blond big hair was a wig that she made herself! She put alot effort into making it look natural. She new as a star she needed a signature look! She’s definitely the blueprint for a certain celebrity everyone knows and loves

I absolutely have a problem with how music industry (moreso black music industry) handles the legacies of black women. Everyone refers to abuse, bad contracts, drugs, incidents, etc. with notable black powerhouse singers like Tami Terrell, Whitney Houston, Michel’le, Janet Jackson, and so on. The fact that Honest didn't use background music just makes this vid more uncomfortable than it already is. I read Tina's story years ago after watching what's love got to do with it. She went through this mess during the Golden age of racism and sexism. I'm happy that Tina overcame it all and I'm glad she's happy. The sht she dealt with during and after Ike makes you appreciate her strength

I think male interviewers were confused at how a woman could get the snot beat out of her and yet seem so put together and positive so she was a curiosity to them...she still stood strong through all that analysis...love her for that...such an example of grace under pressure!!
Please do more videos like this about older artists! Younger people need to know their greatness and importance.
All young girls (and young boys) need to be SERIOUSLY a taught about abusive, narcissistic, mentally unstable human behavior…. In raw detail and with current and past examples. The lessons should begin arnd 11 or 12 years old. Between 13-15 they may stop actively listening, but shld be taught anyway.

People’s lack of empathy for the abuse Tina survived is just so telling of them. And let’s not forget people tried to do that with Rihanna. But luckily for her, it happened in a different time and she was able to have a backing that reprimanded anyone who tried to use her abuse for jokes. Unfortunately Tina did not have that.
The misogynoir Tina experienced in her personal life and as a legendary artist exposes society’s apathy and amusement in Black women’s pain.
I hope Tina continues to be cared for and I’m happy she has a partner who loves her. I’m also happy she left America.
I didn’t expect this, but I enjoyed it a lot. I liked how Tina was able to get out of that situation, and later find someone who cherished her for her. She has gone through so much, and is lucky in that sense. Nevertheless, I wish that what she went through didn’t have so much power to overshadow her good body of work at times. I enjoy and have great interest in watching documentaries/mini-documentaries on music stars who reigned in previous decades. I hope you create more videos like this in the future. ☺️❤️

I was today years old when I realized Tina’s also from Memphis! Nutbush is a neighborhood in Memphis, and a dangerous neighborhood too 😬. I grew up around that area and heard the name Anna Mae a lot but thought it was a character from a tv show at the time. 😂
Tina was recently inducted to the Memphis Musicians Hall of Fame. 🙂

I honestly think that people make the mistake of thinking that the world around Tina cared more about the abuse than her influence. Truthfully, most people’s think of Tina the her talent, music, the strength she showed rebuilding her career. The abuse is important to people because it shows her as a survivor. Americans love a good heroine story. Woman overcomes horrible situation and rebuilds herself bigger and better than before.
With this said, I acknowledge the taunting about her past from people joking about it was rude, and have never liked those jokes. But I don’t agree that the abuse overshadowed her influence. Most people remember her for what they learned from her career than merely the abuse.
I’m so sad no one ever recommended therapy to her. She deserves inner relief and content. I pray her soul is jubilant and healed while she’s on this earth. She deserves that much.

I also didn't realize how many people put a reference into their songs, like I was so disgusted with Jay-z and frustrated with Beyonce for putting that line into Drunk in Love, but I didn't realize it was so popular to do so...like even Common and Alicia Keys did it? That's disappointing, Tina definitely deserved/deserves more respect.

Thank you for this respectful documentary. Towards the end of her life she stated about her life that, “the bad outweighed the good”. No surprise. Anyone who has had a traumatic childhood and or abusive partner knows you never completely heal … and cannot find the spirit she did to do what was in heart to do what she loved doing best. Such a courageous woman of color will never be forgotten. May she rest in peace and love. We love you Tina forever.

As a pure Aretha fan, and yes, I must add that. Ms. Turner (here in the states) a TERRIBLY underrated artist, was a story of achievement in a genre not typicality associated with black audiences. She was a great queen in her OWN right.
I read that there were ongoing feuds between Tina and Aretha..feuds that the Public did not know about, only the whole Beyonce calling Tina a Queen and that pissed Aretha off but there were other behind the scenes feuds that allegedly they had..more with Aretha pushing the feud than Tina .. allegedly. I don't know if you've ever watched the 1993 Essence Awards..both Tina and Aretha were honored that night and both attended the ceremony and won awards. They were seated next to each other in opposite rows but still next to each other...I sorta think they were seated next to each other deliberately by the producers as a way to begin to bury the hatchet.. unfortunately I don't think they ever did 😢
@@ssaalleessuukkaa1 I'm not sure what the beef between them was about. Maybe because they were both exceptional in different ways, in different markets and probably wouldn't "cow tow" to the other. Either way, I wish they would have worked together on something in the 80s. I'll definitely give that award show a look.

Some people are trash man. Just pure evil, ignorance and cruel. They kept reminding her of her darkest moments but ignored her sucess and breakthroughs. It easy to say why doesn't she say she doesn't want to to talk about it anymore because I thought that too but sometimes we feel pressured to do something. We tend to do alot of things out of fear. It takes something really powerful to help you live a full life on earth because people alone will, if you let them, drive you insane or 6ft under. I'm glad she's still with us and you told her story wonderfully.
