I'm here from Tractor timer with Tim ,, I support who he supports ...he is a great guy and family....I know it's expensive but nitrogen would really help your hay yield.. a great channel to watch for making hay is "One Lonely Farmer " here on RUclips,, he makes mostly mulch hay for mushroom barns .. but he does about 5,000 acres of hay .. and he is very thorough and I'm sure you would find some things there to really help you hay crop ...
+PhatboyHD88 Thanks for being here! I watch some of OLF's videos, he's working on a much larger scale than we are. :) Nitrogen would help, but we need to do some weed control and seeding as well. Stay tuned, hopefully those things will be happening on video soon!
It depends on what you consider thicker grass. It will cut, but you’ll have to slow down or it can plug up. The conditioner rolls can be adjusted or even removed, you might be able to get a 5-6’ wide windrow but it won’t just cut it and leave it laying flat the entire width of the cutter.
I feel really bad for ya I just come in from mowing some of my lawn and the blasted stuff is 8-10" high now. I'm mowing with a skag zero turn and will mow close to 20 acres later on when the rain stops. Wish you were closer , ide give it to ya for your animals. Love your videos. Sure is beautiful there. john
Watching from WV where my yard would yield more than 300 pounds of hay to the acre. How many cattle do you have and how do you feed them on that kind of grass?
+Gary Ford Jr. our numbers vary, but right now we're grazing around 100 pairs. We'll buy some feeders this fall and probably double our size going into winter when we move them back down to the feedlot. Our grazing land is better than the hay ground, most of our hay is cut off of residential properties where the owners don't have water rights to irrigate. We're revamping our fertilizer program and plan to do some over seeding, but without water there's not much we can do.
I'm planning a video soon on the water situation here. It's been an issue since settlers first started arriving here. So far so good with the tractor, did a full service on it today.
Ric Denali it look like grasses native and naturalized to Wyoming. I saw what looked like Crested Wheat Grass, Needle and Thread Grass, and Western Wheat. There were also several forms I saw.
300 lb ? Wow .. Ive broke my new holland 3 times in 3 days trying to cut 10 acres . 1st gear at low low and still having to clutch stop forward movement while haybine catches up. I guess I need to quit complaining. Thanks for the brighter way of thinking. I got about 10 to 12 roll bails per acre at 1800 to 2000 lb per bale. Big bails I know its an old bar style NH roller.
jeepers-just how far away is the farm from ur house? i thought u just had to walk out the back door to do all this farming stuff!! how deep would ya have to drill -to tap in the under ground water there? i hate to say it-but yikes-ur grass needs something to make it grow better-.
Our fields are spread around, most are within 4-5 miles and some are right out the front door. Our summer pasture is 30 miles from me and our feedlot is 60 miles from me. My house well is 680' deep, an ag well would be similar if you could get the permits for it. With this area being developed, the odds of getting water rights are slim and it isn't really cost effective for us on small plots. We may be getting 20 acres of irrigated ground to cut, I sure hope we do.
Thoughts on renovating your pasture? Is there any high yielding/low water species you could sow there? What about fertilization' Not cost effective? Id think current grass species might not benefit.
And to think, even this is considered old style equipment. Newer machines can work circles around even this outfit. I have a horse drawn sickle mower, I'd like to get it out here and cleaned up.
We had a lot of Amish or Mennonite communities in southern Kentucky and I'd see them using all kinds of equipment that had been converted to horse drawn.
You sure don't have much for hay. I have to rake my yard, and I mow every week. Do you have water to irrigate with? Then is the equipment outrageous to buy? I was in Wyoming once &I saw where they had water they used it very well. About 1/2 mile both sides of a river they grew lots of hay.
Really enjoyed this video!
Thanks for the shout-out!
Glad you liked it!
+Tractor Time with Tim Thanks Tim!
I talked to your mom glad the hand is getting better. I hope there's no permanent damage. I always knew you'd be tough. Love ya nephew
Hand is doing alright, looks worse than it is. If you're going to be dumb, you've gotta be tough.
Love you too Steve!
Great Video!! I have to say after seeing the ground you had to cover for that small amount of hay, I'll never complain about mine being thin again.
I've seen some other farming channels and I'd be thrilled if our grass was as good as their 'bare spots'.
Nice video. Great to see a 116. My neighbor bought a 116 new back in 1988. It is a big mower.
+bigtractorpower thanks! It's an old mower but should have a lot of life left.

I going crazy looking at larger machines and I found a 116 near m. How would the mower perform on thicker grass? Can it lay out a wide windrow?

Is it pto driven or hydraulic? If it's hydraulic does that put extra wear and tear on your pto pump?
Just curious what made you decide to get a pull behind swather when the old self propelled unit still works?
+Peyton Rodgers we wanted a second mower to be able to cover ground faster using two machines, and as a backup in case the self propelled goes down.
The repaired 116 is working well.
How is your hand healing

Guy in WY. Water was one of things I was wondering about. How do you like the new tractor?
I'm planning a video soon on the water situation here. It's been an issue since settlers first started arriving here. So far so good with the tractor, did a full service on it today.
Guy in WY. Good deal. Looking forward to future videos.
I liked your 'travelin' music'. Who did the recording and what is the title? It really got my toes tappin'.
It's part of the iMovie music library, unfortunately I don't know who the artist is.
Wow, here in the netherlands we have 7300 pounds per acre (comoletely dry hay) not wet grass
That's the saddest hay field I've ever seen. Now I know why my Wyoming life said it took 35 acres for one cow now the 5000 acres farms makes sense.
Looks like that mower works better than our NH 477.
So far it's done a good job for us.
Do you guys ever put any fertlizer on your fields
We do where we can, I have a video on that soon.
I miss your videos!!
I do too! Life got crazy, had to put the real world in front of YT for a minute.
What kind of grass is it?

I'm wondering what 300 pounds of hay would cost compared to the fuel and labor cost involved in you doing the work.
It's very, very close. Some of our other fields have yielded better, so I'll give you guys the final numbers when we're finished.

There are lots of things we could do, but it's tricky getting permission to do it. I'm going to do a whole video on that subject soon.
That's a long way from what I grew up with and much faster. 2 horse power doesn't get it done very fast. :)
And to think, even this is considered old style equipment. Newer machines can work circles around even this outfit.
I have a horse drawn sickle mower, I'd like to get it out here and cleaned up.
Any more it's just yard art or owned and used by the Amish. They do look good cleaned up.
We had a lot of Amish or Mennonite communities in southern Kentucky and I'd see them using all kinds of equipment that had been converted to horse drawn.

No, we don't have the ability to irrigate. Equipment is expensive, that's why we run so much older stuff.
are you a native from Wyoming
+Reimer Dairy No. We lived here for a while when I was young and I moved back a few years ago.
That hay needs some serious fertilizer bad - not much there
Fertilizer would definitely help but our big problem is water.
