Snap On swivel E-10, E-8 and E12 are worth every penny. A tool that make more efficient but not needed for the beginner BMW tech is the SNAP On E torx swivel socket with integrated extension is one of my most useful tools.
I've finally become a mechanic after working out of my driveway for 12 years on my own stuff and side jobs. I mainly worked on E34, E39, and E46's and when I started at the shop I'm at now it was funny to compare how specialized my roll cart was compared to everyone else's. Also I love my Milwaukee stubby 3/8 M12 fuel too! Just barely behind in power compared my coworker's Snap On 3/8 14.4 and mine is 2 years older than his is!

I'm not a mechanic just a guy who works on his own cars at home and I happen to have gotten most of my mechanical knowledge with Japanese cars like Lexus, Mitsubishi, and Honda. Now I'm working on an e92 BMW that I've had as a project this summer, so it was very interesting to compare my new found knowledge to what your experience was like between Toyota and BMW.
Aside from everything you already mentioned, I noticed BMW loves their Newton Meter torque specs and they go into very small values where hand tight is good enough. For example, the transmission pan bolts need something like 7 ft lbs and my cheap 3/8" torque wrench starts at 5 ft lbs, so I can't even use it.
If there is something positive that I took away from BMWs, I love their top mounted oil filters (except for the filter housing gasket problems), the electrical connectors are very well designed and come off very easilyf, brake caliper pins are well protected from the elements, the 8mm bolts for the splash shields work a lot better than a bunch of fragile plastic clips on Toyotas, and finally the automated coolant bleeding procedure.
I use that long clip tool all the time working on transmissions. Reach way up into the Trans tunnel to undo the clips or on sensor plugs
Whats with the trade's obsession with timing everything and working against the clock..reduced hours for warranty jobs.. one hour for diagnostics. I can understand times for factory mass production and assembly but nearly every job is unique when it comes to the motor trade. One snapped or seized bolt and the book time is out the window.
The mechanics industry is shit, you will eat shit for a long time before they treat you even normal.

After 37 year career as a heavy duty truck tec in a high volume dealership I brought my 8’ 2,260 lb tool box home which is in my garage now very seldom do i not have what I need when working on vehicles and hot rods and sure makes it easy and precise just like when I was working on customers vehicles and unlike a car were people drive a few miles home our customers were leaving going across the country so there was no come back when things go wrong the dealer gets charged back
Trust me when i say we were professionals that always Conscience of a vehicle weighting 80,000 lb could easily kill people on the highway alway trying to do it right
Also, I am liking the Carlyle stuff sold by Napa. Last year's Real Deals 1 quarter I bought a 5 piece set of the Carlyle metric extra long box end flex ratcheting wrenches for something like $125. That was a crazy steal of a deal. A lot of other people jumped on that deal. Those wrenches are now almost $300. Made in Taiwan, likely the same manufacturer as Gearwrench and Mountain and Matco. This years' Real Deals suck.

Love your channel. I have been a BMW technician since 1976 and Master since 1992. Sometimes I question why lol. But why did you leave BMW if I may ask?
My biggest gripe is some times are really low. That said there is always plenty to learn. EV and Hybrids are fun to work on and latest thing is remote diagnosis so I can get a picture of what to expect before the car turns up and in most cases order up the parts.

My shop recently had everyone write down how much their tools were worth for insurance purposes. I was surprised how much more everyone else had spent compared to me lol. I had barely $1k in tools while everyone else had around $10k or more. I have mostly craftsman and harbor freight lol
Sometimes its not always about how expensive something is. If you're skilled enough, you don't need a 200 dollar socket wrench.

Nice tour man. It’s okay to buy cheap tools. As a diesel tech you need bigger sockets ,way bigger tools , and it starts getting expensive. So snap on is not our go to. Explore don’t get in debt enjoy your money. At the end of the day a 10mm craftsman socket will remove the same 10mm bolt the snap on removed.

I have set with skips and planed to buy rest of sizes to have it complete but one costs around 8€ so I changed my mind and decided to buy just the sockets that are realy used. Thanks
Only special tools i use are the cam locking tools and e torx for axles.

So from the last post you indicated you were getting out of West Covina. I think this is a smart move for a young man with your knowledge and certifications. Have you thought about Vegas? There are many older retired people here in giant retirement communities, like me. They all drive either older Toyota's or Lexus's, again like me. So, I have a 2008 ES 350 and at the time I had 110,000 miles so I took it to the dealer to get the plugs changed. They try to tell me I need a new timing belt. I was born at night, but not last night. I know that the 3.5 liter is a non-interference engine with a timing chain. I leave and change the coil packs and plugs my self. I had to remove the intake manifold. Life is short and I did not want to do this job. Regardless, the dealer was so dishonest that I had to get my hands dirty! Point being, an honest, personable mechanic with an independent shop could make "bank" as my grand kids say. I would gladly have paid for someone to do this job for me. The only caveat is that real estate prices have gone through the roof since I moved here in 2015.
Nice. Not sure I can handle the heat in Vegas. But yea if you can't find a dealer ship with people you trust no shame in going to an independent shop they usually charge less.
@@LetsDriftMedia Well let me know where you land, because you are now my mechanic. She is my baby and at 185,000 miles, runs like new. No problem at 90 miles per hour down to LA on the 15. My only complaint with the 2008 is I have to use 91 octane. Had I waited to 2009, I could run on 87.

Seen some techs only motivated by flagged hours and not quality of work--these hacks damage guest cars in unseen areas and abuse shop equipment because they want to make dem dollas, yo!

Snap on is what I got suckered into .. sucker!! Haha our shop doesn’t have took trucks anymore, none of us would buy much. All the MAC stuff I got started falling apart after a couple uses, rather buy HF for that type of cost and return. Now I’m not a tool snob, whatever works works i don’t care about labels

If you break or wear out any of your Snap-on stuff, you can still send it in to Snap-on themselves without having to find a tool truck. If it's one item here, one item there, Snap-on corporate will help do the exchange. What they won't help is when people go to a yardsale and buy a bunch of old Snap-on stuff and try to exchange it through Snap-on corporate for new stuff. Same thing with Mac and Matco.
The old stuff was built better than the new stuff.

I'm starting in home mechanic stuff, so each time that I saw a tool box tour, the socket draw has hundreds of sockets, and I wonder if they used them all the time.
Then I watch this excellent vídeo and he said that with 7 wrenches and two sockets rail he can work all day. So what the point to have the biggest tool box with hundreds sockets?
It depends on what you work on. At an independent shop you'll use a healthy variety of sockets and specialty tools with some regularity.

On most hand tools yes. Not on electric or power tools

I just picked up a set of GearWrench 120 tooth with rubber grips and flex heads and they feel amazing. The 120 tooth seems a little expensive, I would probably go for less teeth if I had to do it again, but the flex head is a must have. I didn't realize how much I needed it, until I got one. My other favorite is an Ampro T29771 1/2" Extendable Ratchet - works great for breaking stuff loose, only downside is it's not a flex head.
I also spent 7k$ on a tool box but for the most part i worked out of my cheapo tool cart lol
Can you comment on the 1/4 E10 socket on your go-to socket rail? It looks like it’s two sockets put together. Can you let me know what the exact sockets are?
Its a quarter inch e10 short socket attached to a quarter inch wobble joint

Your toolbox is half empty? What about fuel pressure test kits, compression testing kits, slide hammer set, pulley pullers/installers, a/c uv light, tap & die set, extractors?? I’ve only ever worked at dealers (Volvo and Ford) and my cart is overloaded and I’m looking into adding a side locker to my Matco 6s triple bay with hutch to fit all my tools. But yes, I am a tool junkie. I know I have a problem. 🙂
I do have a tap and die set. But everything else you listed we had a shop tool room that had most of those specialty tools.
My shops have some of those tools available too but my current shop has 60 techs. There are often issues of the tool is being used by someone else when I need it or more often, it barely works because other techs abuse it. I’ve found it saves me some frustration to buy some of my own special tools.
@@ghostwrench2292 but speciality tools aren't something used all the time. At least he didn't it appears. This was an informative video saying most of the basics that he used on a daily basis.

Snap-on tools are good but so dam expensive, companies should have a tool allowance.
You'd be amazed how the organization of my toolbox is f***ed hahaha :D Working for a Mazda, Peugeot, DS, Opel and Mitsubishi dealership.. Can't f****ing find organizers for my box cuz Sweden don't have Mac tools stores xD And we're tied to Würth and the Würth ones doesen't fit the box GG
