Left Toyota dealership in October. Went to work for the city as a mechanic. Best move I ever made. Every holiday off . Major holidays I get the day before plus that day paid. No more working through lunch and staying late to catch up on work.
I bet people that dont know anything about this line of work and dont do this for a living are watching this and thinking "this stuff doesnt look that hard. Why did they need to go to school for it? Why all the training? Why does it take so long for my car to be finished if he works this quickly? Blah, blah, blah." From a tech, worst part of this job is people. I enjoy the job. I find it relaxing when left alone. Throw people and their feelings in the mix and it all turns to shit. Dont mind me, just a rant. Great video dude 👍

Warranty tag, warranty stamp on Repair Order, return warranty parts, run enough flat time for warranty and recall work, perform HealthCheck, print out Diag Report, take photos, upload photos, print out photos, wait for approval, call TAS..... lol
@@LetsDriftMedia I'm an Infiniti tech and Nissan is in the toilet so they are going crazy with auditing the dealerships warranty stuff for any excuse not to pay the claims, so we have to cross all the t's and dot all the i's with every single thing they require and the requirements keep getting crazier and crazier bro. I hate the dealership game but they do pay
Just to be clear to everyone this is an example of what not to do with an evap leak code. I mean $140an hour for diag and we touch the gas cap before doing a leak test which may fix the issue if it isn't sealing correctly. Then visually inspect hoses and not even all of them rather than smoke test. Like yikes man lol
90% of the time its a gas cap especially on vehicles that are not that old. Yes I agree that is not the proper way to go about it but being flat rate we are just trying to make hours.
Trust me I get trying to flag hours I totally do. This is why dealerships are not the place to work lol what you need to think about a the technician and human that just pencil whipped a 30$ fuel cap and 140$ for "diag" to a person trying to make ends meet and pass inspection just to have the light come back on so they can come back for another $140 "diag" you need need to tell the service manager you do diags correctly and you need paid for your time and knowledge. Screw them for charging $140 for 1 hr and letting you flag .3 hrs at some bs pay rate.
@@curtisette This is why I get a good extended warranty. I don't care what you charge or pencil whip as long as it ain't coming out of my pocket. Of course this is what gives dealerships a bad name too.
@@curtisette yea I feel you. But if it were to come back. There is no diagnosis charge the 2nd time since it is considered a comeback. And the problem will get diagnosed for free. Unless the code is a completely different problem then the original Evap leak. But yea that’s the problem with dealership world. The customer wants the repair done for almost free. The dealer wants to make money any way they can. And the technicians are also just trying to make ends meet just like everyone else.

Those rotors are going to do the same thing in a little while. Once the metal has different hardnesses, machining them flat again isn't going to last long. Could have replaced them faster than cutting them and been done before lunch.

Hi Nick, i just love this whole thing you doing. I have loved it since childhood but circumstances made it difficult for me to pursue it. I really want to be one. I love this profession.
Smog tech here. I see those vacuum tubes on Toyotas disconnected all the time and never seen a code from it. Too small, don't be surprised. Also, I wouldn't say 99% of evap codes are gas caps. Infact I would say less than half, I say it's usually a clogged up vent valve or, purge valve. Maybe it's because you work at a dealership and I work at an independent shop so we see different vehicles. 🤷
Yea you are right, usually if there is a problem its not the gas cap, but being in the dealership most the time people bring it in for that code is because they left the cap loose. Not all the time of course but it happens more than you would think.
Yoo started watching your vids recently, its really cool seeing the techs perspective. I started doing Dispatch at my local Toyota. Gotta deal with the techs and advisors and best of all... the gravy haha.

I'm actually a toyota tech and sometimes it's boring as hell. One day I did 10 gas pump recalls on those corolla. Next week it was on the camry model. Then the highlander.... the worst was the tacoma and 4runner some are different but doing the same job over and over....
Awesome videos man. Subbed! I have a question. I own a 2015 tundra with 136,000 miles. My local dealer is saying I have a cam tower leak and a valve cover leak, then offered to buy my truck. They quoted me $5k to fix this supposed leak. Is this a common issue that you’ve seen?
Yes, I have seen/repaired a few leaking cam tower seals. I would pressure wash it and recheck, to be sure .sometimes its just the valve covers leaking then dripping down the cam towers. But sometimes its both.
Hey Nick! Long time viewer right here, been watching for years. I'm an ASE L1 Master Tech. 24 years old. Worked in independent shops since out of high school. I'm about to start at a dealership for the first time and was wondering if you've got any advice for me? Watched all of your day in the life videos.
Be Honest and study and learn your product line, then no one can mis-lead you ! This is coming from a Lexus Master tech. for 10 years. turning wrenches about 35 yrs.
Similar days to yours especially with the Sienna low beam issue. Except with me, the customers usually forget to turn it to "Auto" or turn it on in general. At that point I laugh because I ask myself "do I charge? or not?" I still do because you're dammed if you do and dammed if you don't so just do it.
Awesome to see you at your job!! Quick question if you don’t mind.. 2017 Camry..2.5L.. when I fill up my fuel tank I can sometimes hear a sloshing of gas sound when I come to a stop. Like you can hear the fuel in the tank. Am I in danger of blowing up or is it a normal condition? Thank you for all you do!
No you're not in any danger. It's not a problem. It's a pretty normal condition as there aren't any baffles in the tank to mitigate sloshing. Most customers I just recommend turning on some music buy there's really nothing we can do.
Funny how last time I scanned a car it came up with a P0456 on a 14 Ford c-max with 218,000 miles proves my teacher was right when he said power train codes can be universal like this.
Are Toyota’s pretty easy to work on compared to other makes? I’ve worked at Subaru and Kia and both were relatively easy to work on as well. I’ve also worked on BMW’s & Benz’s, those being the most difficult, tight spaces, different kinds of bolts etc.
Worked for BMW, Toyota and Chevrolet. out of all of them id say Toyota is the easiest and my favorite to work on. Also the first brand I started with so maybe thats why,.
@@LetsDriftMedia Shot myself in the foot maybe but I’ve been at a local independent shop for the last month. Definitely took some time to get used to and everyday is something different. Pretty damn rewarding I have to say and its reignited my passion for wrenching again. Kudos!

Yea this made me wanna push towards a auto tech
I loved when your friend blowed air and smiled
Yoo started watching your vids recently, its really cool seeing the techs perspective. I started doing Dispatch at my local Toyota. Gotta deal with the techs and advisors and best of all... the gravy haha.
you got me with the engine knock hahaha
Just bought a 2010 Sequoi hope you have some vids on them,or plan to show some of the repairs they need.Love the channel bro
Why am I just now finding your channel. Keep it up man I love the content
“that guy that drives into someone’s toolbox” shit LOL!!!
No joke thats the cleanest shop floor i have ever seen.
You shoulda seen BMWs floor
Thanks for this video I’m currently in school studying Automative and I’m checking out Automative videos and you just got my follow💯👍🏾 keep up the good work love it I could learn a lot from you lol
🤘
Good luck at your new place man. I also recently got out of the dealership world. Best thing I could’ve done
really? why is that?
@@talhatariq6420 warranty work really sucks. You also just in general aren't paid as well for your skills.
@@Kazuma.- so what would you suggest doing instead?
I'm actually a toyota tech and sometimes it's boring as hell. One day I did 10 gas pump recalls on those corolla. Next week it was on the camry model. Then the highlander.... the worst was the tacoma and 4runner some are different but doing the same job over and over....
Damn, that was an expensive diagnosis for turn signals haha
Yea sometimes its the dumbest things that just require a few seconds of looking around.
5 months in being a lube lech, excited to get up to this level!
Only 4 more years to make tech where youll be trusted to change starters and alternators yipppyyy
@@BillyBob-op6lg only if you’re a bad technician 🤣
Love this kinda video bro! More of this bro thank you
looking from Russia too
Finally an auto tech not just crying and complaining about his job
Soo easy to be a Toyota technician, mostly oil and filter change, whereas being a BMW or Audi or MercBenz tech is constant workload and issues
lol all brands are the same. Ive worked at Toyota, BMW, and Chevy. A car is car. Same game. Maybe a couple different tools required.
Boy better pull out them airpods before safety come n’ getcha! Jk great content man, working at the dealers was fun
Bro the wrench prank just made me piss myself 😂😂😂
i make service appointments at toyota! 20ta02 and 21td03 on those recalls lol? enjoyed your video!!
Yoo I just got hired by Toyota and I start on Tuesday!!!
What I’m earth is L1?
@@alexdanzuka6734 L1 ASE Certification. Advanced Engine Specialist.
@@E46-q6u thanks, I thought as soon as you get all the ase, like that’s it, your a master tech, but hell yea, good stuff my dude
@@alexdanzuka6734 L1 is more important than Master Tech to determine skill if you ask me
Similar days to yours especially with the Sienna low beam issue.
What Carl said you are fine. Unless you smell excessive fuel or have a leak under your car don’t worry.
Funny how last time I scanned a car it came up with a P0456 on a 14 Ford c-max with 218,000 miles proves my teacher was right when he said power train codes can be universal like this.
I'm going to pursue diploma in automotive service technician & operations and watching this video making me more interested
Fuel pumps, piston rings. Sounds like my life working for Honda.
Dude I love the wrench knocking 😹😹😹
I always hated resurfacing rotors
Costs almost the same for customer to replace them with new pads (not oem)
Yea good pay but hate brake dust and rotor shavings.
I’ve actually worked on a lot of Chevy, Dodges and Ford trucks lately which is ironic because I spent my entire career avoiding them due to their size. Pretty damn rewarding I have to say and its reignited my passion for wrenching again. Kudos!
Dope energy guys! Good stuff
I have a problem with my 2012 lexus es350 high beam not working all parts are working fuses ok wiring on no power to high beam do you have any idea what is the issue.
Man I wish you were the tech at my dealer. 😂 They're giving me a hard time for warranty work because I want to a 275/60/20 instead of OEM 275/55/20. They warrantied the rear end but now won't look at the truck as it has a slight issue still in the drive line. And a idler pulley is loud AF and they told me serp belt has moisture. 18' tundra limited 40k miles, things junk. I miss 90/early 00's Toyota quality.
the toyota i worked at actually sucked balls, they do make good cars tho, but i couldn’t tell you how many techs forgot oil in cars🤣
Yoooo I have the same spider in my drivers side tail light in my 2017 Tundra.
I love the thinkdiag code reader I bought for my 2012 Corolla s
How has that been working out? I like that tool but my little pocket tool pulls codes much faster is all.
@@LetsDriftMedia it takes a while because of the wifi and Bluetooth, but it's good. What is the one you have now? Send me the link. Does it pull tpms codes? Lmk.
Great video! Makes me miss the shop life.
that spider would bug me if it was my car lol
Watching this on my day off is making feel like I’m at work lmao
Good diagnostic on the defective bulb sir
Love your day in the life video s.. what do you use to run the evaporator test? TechStream? Can you do a video on that?
Cool video bro. Oh the sweet dealer life. Quick question…I just did a 3” lift on my tundra stage 5 icon. Any problems that you know may arise from it. I wonder if I need to re-gear. My mpg dropped to like 10.5 and I can feel those heavy 35” tires during acceleration. I’m a dealer tech too but not Toyota.
Yoooo I have the same spider in my drivers side tail light!
Dang the shirts you guys wear almost look like the ones we get as Toyota forklift technicians 👍
I love this video!
