  • I love Hourou Musuko. It's one of those rare shows where just about every aspect of production seemed to fall into place perfectly, but on top of that, it also managed to strengthen my feelings on a topic that I had previously struggled to understand or connect to. If you somehow stumbled across this video without having seen the show, I highly recommend you do so.

For anyone who happens to stumble across this video down the road, I suppose I should note that I have since realized I am, in fact, transgender, so while this video is still a good depiction of how I felt after initially watching the series, it isn't really representative of where I stand on the subject nowadays. If I come back to the series in the future, I'll try to elaborate on how exactly my perspective has changed.

I've only started coming out to people as trans for about a month or so but I've known for a long time. I hope you do come back to this series eventually, as it would be interesting to hear how you came to that realization about yourself. But of course it's a deeply personal matter and if you aren't comfortable discussing it that's totally cool. In either case, keep making the awesome videos!

Past You: "So how then, would I react to a character whom, from the outset, I knew I could not relate to?"
Future You: "Is that a challenge?"

"...and I don't think that I'll ever be able to fully understand her feelings without grappling with similar emotions myself."
I bet that's a fun line to look back on :)

No show has ever made me hurt as much as this show did. I felt every sting that you feel when watching Nitori x10... I don't identify with the audience surrogate, I identify with Nitori. I went through a lot of the same emotions and scenarios. Not quite as harsh as she did, only because I was never brave enough to express myself like she does in the show. Basically, watching her do what I never could work up the courage to do, and go through hell because of it, feels like being stabbed straight through the heart hundreds of times.

yeah i did not have it as bad as her either, but i always liked to be androgynous (as i am non-binary), so i got bullied but i developed sort of a "zero-fucks-given" attitude when it came to people making "gay jokes" about me, and it helped that i had progressive parents. the point is i know many of the pains she feels, but i have not had it nearly as bad.

I just got done watching this series about 15 minutes ago. As a transgender woman, a year into hormone replacement therapy, I watched this and I was so teary-eyed the entire time. I vividly remember the painful feelings I had at the onset of puberty, and how much I was distressed at not growing breasts, not developing as a woman should. I remember seeing girls grow and wondering why I was a boy, why couldn't I have been born a girl. I hated my body, I haded the changes, I hated so much of it all but I kept moving forward. I faced these issues and much more entirely inwardly for most of my life. I quit outwardly expressing myself when I was 8 after I had my father walk in on me trying to zip up a dress. After finally coming to my senses at 23 I started to transition, I have never felt better but my life up to that point was a living hell, and it still has been hell since. Thankfully in recent months, it has slowly gotten a little better.

I have to confess, The way Nitori is in that bridge scene before Takatsuki hands his hoodie over to her, that's how I feel like 40-60% of the time.

"One living hell on top of another living hell"
As a non-binary person that one hit close. That's exactly what it feels like.

I highly recommend to anyone here to read the manga if you want more exploration on what happens between Shuichi and Ana. Also, the manga starts off earlier with the cast in elementary school, which gives way to the interesting Rose of Versailles play Shuichi was involved with. It's a very strong concept to have in its beginning since Versailles' protagonist has major identity issues. Wandering Son is still the only series I know of with transgender characters that writes them realistically, so it's up there on my list for series people need to check out. My only complaint about its manga is how constant school events occur, which actually causing the pacing to become slower and could have been used to explore other characters.

Another thing I really like about this show is how the anime is able to completely explore an idea without adapting the entire manga. This way, the anime still feels complete even if the story isn't. It's one of those rare instances where I immediately wanted to check out the manga without feeling forced to do so.

Note: "I was raised by a single mom in relative poverty so maybe that's why I never went through the butting heads phase that apparently most teens go through"
Thank you. This actually applies to me too. My mom and I have always been close and she always treated me with respect, since we had to rely on each other and we were all the other had. I'm still extremely close with her even now that I'm an adult, so it's nice to know that other people with similar experiences exist.
Actual comment: I always loved Hourou Musuko for many of the same reasons you did. I remember finding it as it was airing one day, and being completely confused. I was only around 15 or so when I first came upon it and, being raised in a relatively small town all my life, hadn't really come across anyone questioning their gender before. I didn't even know it was a concept until this show. I ended up watching the first two episodes and then keeping up with it weekly as it aired, enthralled with the soft artwork, the quietness, and the subtleties that came along with the experience that is Hourou Musuko. It was an eye opener in more ways than one: The fact that it addressed a concept that I never knew people tackled in real life, presented in a way that I hadn't experienced in anime yet (I had only watched the Big 3, FMAB, Death Note, and Haruhi at this point) was mindblowing and made me care deeply for the medium that is anime in itself.
Hourou Musuko along with HunterxHunter (for different reasons of course) is what I owe for my love of anime, I'm sure.
Thank you for sharing with us your thoughts on the show and how you personally connected with the disconnect. It was a wonderful video.

yeah, i grew up with my mom and dad until i was 8 or 9, then they got divorced because my dad cheated on my mom, events transpired, and they had 50/50 custody of me, so i some days i spent at my moms, others at my dads. the only rebelling i did against parents was times when i would get fed up with what my dad did and i expressed those feelings by yelling them to him, and i do not count this as a parent, but my stepmother was what i would call "a stuck-up workaholic witch", and i had a strong disdain for her, to the point where i had thoughts of killing her. but yeah i am very close with my mom and she is just at the edge between poor and lower-lower middle class.

Genuinely one of my favourite anime. After years, this quiet and beautiful show still resonates, and still challenges what anime can actually be.

As someone who has been diagnosed on the spectrum and 11 years after that, while it is true that the friends that I have made have often more mature, a good chunk of the kids who were diagnosed didn't mature like me since their families often didn't push them to make social relationships and find out the social norms. I know it's not the same as someone who's trans, however there's a lot of layover between them since, in both there's a disconnect and the general public at large doesn't understand a person who has a condition that makes them deviate from the norm.

I cannot tell you how happy this video made me. I absolutely love this manga series (The anime I like less- I wasn't a fan of the art style and it's far shorter which cause problems) but I have a very deep connection to one of the few characters I can see myself in. I never talk about this manga or recommend it to others because I never truely know how they're going to feel about it, and even if they like it, I know they'll never see it the same way I do. It's great to hear someone with no connection to this story like it as much as you did. That gave me some hope that one day I might tell someone about my experience, and they will be legitamitlly interested and supportive. What a great video, man. Cheers to you
Edit: AND THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH FOR USING THE RIGHT PRONOUNS

I have a few friends who are trans, so my empathy for trans people was already pretty high since these friends happen to grapple with the immature boys that go to my school and their at home situations. For my friends, their home felt like hell and school was always finding a way to turn into more hell for them. It's like it was never ending. I would always try to be there as much as I could, but that doesn't mean I haven't fallen short a few times. Life has gotten a bit better for them, but they still have such a long way to go in life.
After watching Hourou Musuko, my heart hurt. A lot. See, with real life I tend to feel more disassociation/disconnect than others, so after a while I feel a detachment from most people I hang out with. Even if we are good friends. This thing also leaks into how I'm able to stick to things like watching shows and reading. Heck, that's why I could never even bring my self to watch more than 50 episodes of Fairy Tail (And that was me making an effort to try and finish it). With shows like Hourou Mususko however, I don't really have that time to get disassociated with it since it has a short run time. While that may be a bit damaging when it comes to following the source material, it makes me able to empathize with these characters in a way that wouldn't have been possible if it had 30 episodes or something. That's one reason why I truly love it so much. It's able to do so much in just 11 episodes.

LGBTQ+ works are so rare in Japanese media even tho it's so popular worldwide, that people like us need to scour through to find them. So writers who are writing these beautiful realistic mangas and animes, please know that you hold a special place in our hearts ♥️ it's that the media we've always looked up to has been so ignorant of our voices, that we are grateful for the very few works we have. Because when the society never told us our identity is normal and valid and we had almost no one to take advice from or look up to, your works followed us to far off places and helped us explore and accept ourselves . Hourou Musuko and Shimanami Tasogare has changed my life in ways I can't articulate, and I'll forever be grateful for it..

I discovered you recently through your Naruto videos and then came across this gem.
I am a transwomen and I love this show. To hear you talk about it like this feels with joy. If this allowed you to understand trans more then I am happy for that.
I am open for conversation if you ever want to talk to a real life trans girl. I am pretty laid back and open so you don't have to worry about offending.
    Thanks for this video!!!

Okay, your timing is ridiculous. Last time it was like you were reading my mind calling for a What's in an OP for Guru Guru, and now this.
Last night someone posted a request for an non-traditional romance anime, and I recommended Horou Musuko. I saw their response this morning, and it was basically, "I read a gender-bend manga a while back, and since then I haven't really been interested in the topic... I'll watch it eventually but it's probably gonna sit on my PTW..."
I didn't have the words to respond to this and give the show a strong recommend... and then you drop this video.

Living hell on top of another living hell, that is a good way to put that time period in a trans persons life if they have not come out, or cant transition. I was very close to being suicidal in middle school. The dysphoria got so bad and the testosterone poising my brain and body was almost too much to bare. Most days i just ended up dissociating after school for hours.

In the manga Ana and Nitorin get back together and remain together till university. Anna does ask in the last panel of the last episode of the manga if she is actually a lesbian for dating Nitorin while kissing Nitorin in underwear in their apartment. Not sure if she means they will split or not cause there no more chapters. that was the end

I know its a year on, but the point is still relevant. You mean like how e v e r y disney movie is too straight? How the forced relationship of Han and Lea in Star wars is too straight? Like how every child cartoon is too straight? Yeah, i just don’t like those because they’re too straight. Thats how you sound. Ridiculous.
