Exactly. As soon as the VAR sees the Tottenham player lining up to take the free kick or even when he kicks it surely the VAR officials should shout stop play to the ref and say you’ve not awarded the goal. Or surely the VAR officials should have seen on their screens the 0-0 score line and intervened then as well!! Madness.

@@chuak.c7349 Well, you've inadvertently hit the nail on the head. Many feel that VAR is biased & fixing games, etc. That's the problem: no confidence leads to doubt & suspicion. That's become an overall theme now. This technology should simply be objective. The World Cup semi automated technology will have to be introduced asap. The very fact that an awful lot of fans are feeling the system is rigged against their teams, etc., is proof that VAR is failing as it stands right now. After this incident, the conspiracy theories will go through the roof. Everyone is impacted by this. This may be the best thing that's happened in the 5 years since VAR has been in use because it will force necessary changes to be made. They can't just send out an apology and have things continue on as before. I don't think this was an attempt at fixing a match at all. I think it was a complete breakdown of the system caused by people simply not focused on doing their professional duty. That's why this is so huge ~ too big to be a match fixing incident, etc. They've even had to release a major apology due to the complete failure of their system. Now things will have to change for the better.

As big a mistake as this was, there is a simple fix...communication. The VAR officials should be talking to the referee throughout the process. They should be communicating what they are looking at and then clearly communicate what they have determined. If they are truly only saying "check complete" to the referee then that is a huge problem. While American football replay has its own issues, that is one thing that is very well done...communication between the replay and on-field officials. I used to officiate college football and have first-hand experience with the communication aspect of replay. VAR needs to talk to the onfield officials in detailed language so this does not impact other games.

The commenters failed to take one thing into account in criticizing VAR: it didn't change the on-field decision. In other words, if VAR didn't exist, the outcome would have been the same. If anything, it was a missed opportunity for VAR to do better, but it didn't have a negative effect.

Any team can accept a loss away against Spurs, the result is not the issue. But this was blatant match fixing by PGMOL, and it clearly was not the first time. The most important match of the weekend, and Webb assigns two tainted refs to officiate both on-field and VAR? 1. Annul the result and order a replay.
    2. Suspend the refs involved indefinitely until a thorough investigation is completed.
    3. Do a thorough investigation.
    4. Improve the quality of refs through training programs and better compensation. It has to be a full-time job, NOT a part time job. The clubs can share the burden for the compensation.
    5. Going forward, make the communication between the on field refs and the VAR refs public.
Those are reasonable and I hope most EPL clubs are pushing in that direction.

I'm not buying this. If a player takes a free-kick too early the referee recalls it. If the opposing team claims a wrong call in their favour the referee recalls and corrects it. Why can't you recall a wrong offside call? If this is the case, teams should look to exploit this with quick free kicks even if they go against the referee's call because he can't correct it. It is seeming more and more likely that this was foul play the more they explain.
