Just watched this from my home in East Memphis...it's the middle of the afternoon and after watching the video, I am getting in the car now to pick some up. This our family's favorite BBQ place and THE BEST in our opinion (and that's saying something in this town!) It's the first stop when my brother visits us from California every Christmas. Great job with the video--enjoyed it immensely, guys--y'all are funny! And great job as always, Eric with the Q. You and your family's shop are Memphis treasures -- as is Lori, our beloved BBQ Shop server for over 15 yrs.
I'm a Brit and have booked a trip to Tennessee in May 25 to discover my roots (my maternal grandad was from TN.) Cannot wait to immerse myself in the culture and food. However, coming from a Caribbean background on my dad's side, I am well acquainted with spices/seasonings thank you very much, lol.
As a Texan, I was heavily rolling my eyes when they started cutting that meat with a knife and fork. It's like the owner heard me through the screen and stopped that madness. BBQ is one of those food where you should look like a toddler eating spaghetti when you're done or you're not doing it right!
I've said this before: it doesn't matter where you go in the Southern US, you will find good barbque, but it's all slightly different. Different hardwoods give a different flavor to the meat. Different cooking methods and times frames. Different styles of flavoring from dry rubs to wet marinades to glazes. Different types and cuts of meat from beef brisket and beef ribs, to pork ribs and pulled pork roast. Then the sauces are all different from KC to the Carolinas, or no sauce in Texas. Each area has their own speciality, that is the best in the state/US. IT'S ALL DIFFERENT; BUT IT'S ALL GREAT! You can have your preferrences, but almost no one will turn down a plate of Southern BarBQue.
And if you're going to smoke it in the yard for 16h, wood of a fruit bearing tree. Here it's citrus, not because I had the hell smacked out of me before, but that taste is very different. Then just swish the bone straight out the meat with how tender and juicy it is (literally falls off if you try to hold the bone lol)
My girls and I have watched yall for a long time, and it was so exciting to see you walk into our neighborhood BBQ! We are proud of our city, and loved that you all enjoyed some of its best.
I am so glad he did that. The first thought in my head was, "You don't need a knife for ribs." Lol. Then he got 2 Brits to go crazy about his beans! Lol You guys are awesome.
I lived in Memphis area briefly, and one day I just had to stop to see what this man was doing with two big grills made of half steel drums on the side of the country road on my way to the Millington Navy base. He was cooking ribs. Well I hadn’t had ribs much up to that point in my life yet. This man was so nice to me, he was so vivacious and friendly and funny. I asked him about a hundred questions. I remember the brush he used to put the sauce on, it looked like a navy mop. 😂. That was a great memory, and of course they were delicious. We had them about once a week while I lived there until I had to go to boot camp. I had moved into the area before I started boot camp. I was so lucky to get to know the town before hand. I had a great time living in that area, and the food was as memorable as the people.
I'm a big BBQ guy. I love the different styles and appreciate how BBQ differs from region to region. I am from Texas, so I do have a tendency to prefer beef and getting your flavors from the different kinds of wood smoke and rubs over sauces. That being said, it still all good to me. The "glazed" ribs look really good. I've seen glazed meats before, but the thickness of the glaze on those ribs is on another level. Thank you @jolly for checking this place out as it is now on my BBQ places to hit when I am out traveling.
I also was very impressed by how clean they managed to keep themselves. Must be the British manners. When I eat BBQ, I will at minumum have sauce up both sides of my cheeks due to lack of self restraint. I look like a 1 year old learning to eat birthday cake for the first time.
I seriously doubt you will regret it (unless you are one of the unfortunates who cannot or does not eat pork). The pork is the play here. If you do not like pork (or cannot eat pork) you likely will be disappointed.
I love watching these videos of British guys tasting American food. Keep bringing it. I am married to a Brit, and go over often… Nothing comes close to American barbecue.
The guys at Sorted Food and TopJaw come to the states all the time for food tours. The Sorted guys tend to look for more homey type places like this amazing BBQ. The TopJaw guys might hit a few more high end places too. Check them out.

"That guy was headed to graduate school and didn't think he was going to be running this place." Welp, I must say Eric, I'm glad things didn't exactly go as you thought, you're continuing an incredible business/tradition. Legend of BBQ💯🥩
As a Memphian, y’all can understand now why any time some asks me the question ‘if you had to make just one BBQ recommendation for someone visiting for the day’ I always always always answer: The BBQ Shop. It’s the absolute best. Did yall get a chance to try the spicy BBQ sauce? Game changer!
From Memphis here. We ran over there after seeing this video and they were closed (Sundays and Mondays). No worries though, we came back the next day and have decided this is our new favorite bbq place!
Just shoot on down to South Carolina and we will show you how to do them beans, let alone some darn good BBQ! Maybe not 1st place, but in the top five 😉 In the Military I have traveled to each and every state and 18 foreign countrys in my life I eat BBQ pretty much anywhere that serves it.. South Carolina ranks at the top of the list, but only if they glaze it, most places serve sauce on the side, but to my palette, that sauce needs to be cooked in.
I’m from Chicago, but Tennessee in general is the state I’ve visited the most… the smoky mountains, the rivers, the food, the music… God, I love Tennessee!
I was considering relocating there until I found out they tax income from investments as regular income. Considering that ALL of my income is from investments, I gave it a pass.

As a Memphian, I’m glad you guys loved The BBQ Shop as much as you did. Memphis has a lot of great BBQ and The Shop is Mt. Rushmore worthy in my book. Cheers.
Texas does the best beef BBQ, but places like north & south Carolina, tennessee, mississippi & more all specialize in pork BBQ. The best beef ribs & brisket are in texas, but the best pork BBQ is in other southern states. It's a regional thing, just like all great foods.

I thought they were sponsored by Spam when Ollie started the sponsor section and I honestly didn't even question it
My immediate thought was 'oh I like spam'

They've been sponsored by Coke so its only natural to believe the next step up is SPAM
they should film a spam episode!!

My husband and I have family in Nashville and we live in Arkansas. We’re 2 1/2 hours from Memphis. We watched this and both agreed next time we are traveling to Nashville we’re making a stop at the BBQ Shop for lunch!! Looks delicious!!!!
ollie's dedication to sponsors in unmatched
I wish he would do whatever spam video he was talking about 🥲
I think speaking on behalf of all Americans, That Josh and Ollie are now considered Honorary Americans 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Their facial expression after the first bite of the ribs says it all! 🇺🇲

As an American I agree josh and Ollie are proper Americans!!!!🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Just watched this from my home in East Memphis...it's the middle of the afternoon and after watching the video, I am getting in the car now to pick some up. This our family's favorite BBQ place and THE BEST in our opinion (and that's saying something in this town!) It's the first stop when my brother visits us from California every Christmas.
Great job with the video--enjoyed it immensely, guys--y'all are funny! And great job as always, Eric with the Q. You and your family's shop are Memphis treasures -- as is Lori, our beloved BBQ Shop server for over 15 yrs.
Without fail... most guests will always wind up making eye contact with Ollie for the rest of the video. 😂 He's awesome
I agree… Ollie is so charismatic! Quick witted… Just as charming as he can be.
It's kind of getting annoying for me.
@@Sklounst_Actualwhat is?
I agree! Ollie has a great sense of humour!
@@Sklounst_Actual😂 How long you been a fan?
Eric deserves praise, not just for his amazing food, but for gracefully putting up with Ollie's attempts to make him laugh. hahaha.
Brits being introduced to actual flavor and spices and well cooked food is a special pleasure of mine.
Some English food is beautiful, some English chefs are masters of their craft, come to the Cotswolds, you wont be disappointed.
And to think....they conquered most of the globe for spices....only to rarely use them. Ha ha
A large part of why I don't eat barbecue 😅
I mean I use a knife to cut a rib off the rack, but also why would it come with a knife if it's a big deal lmao.
Like an Italian rolling their eyes over any pizza that's not considered "pure Italian". If it was serious
Yes they just set up that bit for the reaction. That's not how they normally eat ribs
Cutting off a 3 rib section to pick up, but as soon as that one cut is done, knife and fork go down and both hands dig in.
I agree it's all great. I love em dry and I love em wet. I love em sweet and I love em savory. I need to try the Alabama white sauce too.
but we now know, because it is official, Memphis has the best pork ribs in the world and there is not even a close second. Jolly confirms.
@@randallwilliamson3838 Tennessee for pork, Texas for beef. I love it all.
And you would be amazed how much of it 'leaked' up here in the north, we're enjoying it now more than ever!
The owner is so wholesome. I love it!
I am so glad he did that. The first thought in my head was, "You don't need a knife for ribs." Lol. Then he got 2 Brits to go crazy about his beans! Lol
You guys are awesome.
4:51 the look of fear on his face when he corrects how they eat the ribs 😂
I loved when Eric shut them down hard for using a knife on the ribs.😂
Yes that's why they deliberately did it
@@sharnadixon-scott710 it might have been a bit, but in almost every other video they use knife and fork, even for pizza sometimes lol
@@Steampunk_Kak when they eat BBQ they use their hands. Biscuits and gravy they use a knife and fork fried chicken hands
Ollie's compliment to Erik was so genuine and appreciative ❤
And Erik is so humble which is so refreshing
That's why it's called soul food it will make you dance cause it be so good to your soul lol
Such a humble man who makes such good looking bbq, thats what makes food taste even better is the love and hard work by hard working honest people
One of the most lovable and worthy of respect restaurant owner .
Great memories for you. And you made me hungry.
Thank you for your service, and thank you for sharing your memories of our city and its people.
Made a detour through Memphis just to try these ribs….SO very worth it!
That first bit had Ollie SILENT! Not even a sigh, he was suspended in disbelief! oh, im so envious!
Joel’s cackle at Josh getting reprimanded for cutting the ribs with a knife. 🤣🤣
I'm heading there tomorrow. Can't wait!
Edit: It more than lived up to the hype, and Eric was so nice. Highly recommended!
I love how much you can tell from Ollie’s facial expressions 😂

So fun to see them interact with each business owner and employees. They all end up with a mutual appreciation for the other.
As a Memphian, it can’t be understated how good the BBQ Shop is and Eric truly is a master of the craft and as genuine as it comes
Josh is very brave wearing a white shirt to a BBQ joint. I am proud that you kept it clean. Lol 😂
I also was very impressed by how clean they managed to keep themselves. Must be the British manners. When I eat BBQ, I will at minumum have sauce up both sides of my cheeks due to lack of self restraint. I look like a 1 year old learning to eat birthday cake for the first time.
@@turbodog182oh, we all do that with ribs. Same thing with a wedge of melon, the only way to eat it is wrap it around your face and dive in.
I just moved to Memphis and have never been to the BBQ shop. I am one of the 100. I will be going straight there.
You DANG right!!! 💥
The guys at Sorted Food and TopJaw come to the states all the time for food tours. The Sorted guys tend to look for more homey type places like this amazing BBQ. The TopJaw guys might hit a few more high end places too. Check them out.
I live in Alabama and drive to Memphis for Gus's fried chicken but now I will definitely have to visit Eric and point out the picture and eat good bbq. Thank you for this amazing video and the work you all do!

Memphian here!! I’m so glad you found The BBQ Shop and not one of the touristy places. There are some good ribs around town, all a bit different, but glazed or wet are definitely heaven imo. The BBQ Shop does them right!
i was having a pretty bad day today, this video just brought a huge ass smile to my face. Thank you Josh and Ollie
"That guy was headed to graduate school and didn't think he was going to be running this place." Welp, I must say Eric, I'm glad things didn't exactly go as you thought, you're continuing an incredible business/tradition. Legend of BBQ💯🥩

From Memphis here. We ran over there after seeing this video and they were closed (Sundays and Mondays). No worries though, we came back the next day and have decided this is our new favorite bbq place!
When a man as discerning as Eric warms up to Ollie it’s totally magical. The Josh went bonkers over the beans! Wish we had something that good in NC.
I live in Memphis and you picked an EXCELLENT spot for ribs!!!
I live one block away from this place and the food is KILLER and everyone is so nice and the whole vibe is just amazing! BBQ shop all day
I’m from Chicago, but Tennessee in general is the state I’ve visited the most… the smoky mountains, the rivers, the food, the music… God, I love Tennessee!
I was considering relocating there until I found out they tax income from investments as regular income. Considering that ALL of my income is from investments, I gave it a pass.
@@HotVoodooWitchas of 2021 that tax was done away with.
@@caseyb1365 yes but I relocated prior to 2021. It's not so bad. I've never, in my entire life, lived in a landlocked state or, for that matter, farther than 20 minutes away from the water. So it's okay that I'll finish my life within walking distance of it.
I'm not really sure why Scotty Kilmer, the car guy, left it in a hurry, but it makes me a wee bit wary.

Texas does the best beef BBQ, but places like north & south Carolina, tennessee, mississippi & more all specialize in pork BBQ. The best beef ribs & brisket are in texas, but the best pork BBQ is in other southern states. It's a regional thing, just like all great foods.
