"An Old Fashioned Love Song" is a 1971 song written by Paul Williams and performed by the American pop-rock band Three Dog Night. Chuck Negron performed the lead vocal on this track. Taken as the first single from their 1971 album, Harmony, the song peaked at number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in December 1971, becoming the band's seventh top-ten hit. It was Three Dog Night's first record to top the U.S. easy listening chart. It reached number 2 in Canada. Its lyrics suggest the straightforward and melodic nature of the tune: Just an old fashioned love song / Comin' down in three part harmony / Just an old fashioned love song / One I'm sure they wrote for you and me.
According to the Karen Carpenter biography Little Girl Blue by Randy L. Schmidt, Williams originally intended the song for The Carpenters, who were in the middle of a string of hits with their own brand of "old fashioned love songs", including two of Williams' own compositions, "We've Only Just Begun" and "Rainy Days and Mondays". Although this was the first song Williams had written specifically for the Carpenters, Richard Carpenter rejected it, and so Williams offered the song to Three Dog Night. The Carpenters never recorded the song, but did perform it live on television with Carol Burnett a few months later.

Chuck Negron’s voice is perfect for this song-starts out like a crooner of old, soft and sexy, then he rocks!

When I was 10 back in 1975 this song literally haunted the airways, plus which I had my own 45 record play version, from which I hardly ever parted. LOVE this song!

There's also the original version of this same video. Danny's vocals, facial expressions and antics during his solo towards the end are absolutely priceless. There's a hint of vaudeville and maybe a carnival or circus atmosphere about it. Along the lines of The Show Must Go On. This was the studio version dubbed over their live performance. I saw TDN in Seattle around '70 or so. They have so many great songs. Eli's Coming, Try a Little Tenderness, Chest Fever, Cowboy and Pieces of April to name but a few.
Three Dog Night should have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame while Corey and all the other members were still around..

This is a good version of the song. I cannot understand why Richard Carpenter rejected the song. It was perfect for Karen. Everything they touched turned to gold around this time. If it made no. 4 for Three Dog Night, it would surely have topped the charts again. At worst it would have been a very solid album cut. Disappointing A&R there, for once, Richard! (To be fair, he got it right 99% of the time!)
