Definitely an upgrade from 24-105 and the 20-70 f4. Especially if u don’t need the longer end or you can pair 24-50 with a 85mm. For wedding photography etc. I am 24mm 1.4gm and 50 1.2gm. I am wondering if this lens can just replace both and then I can just carry a prime on my second camera.
for wedding 24 is definitely not wide enough unless u only shoot wedding portraits and not the wedding day. I love my 20-70 as it covers the wide and standard but really wish it could be 2.8.
Great video. I do a TON of gimbal work and rarely shoot over 50mm for gimbal stuff. Using the Sigma 24-70 2.8 and it's just so heavy. This might be the ticket!
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema haha maybe push it to 105 Idk what optically possible for them gotta keep things humble. 😂. For video and narrative work tighter then 85 isn’t something i see myself needing. And i have the 3 major gm primes.

Jason Morris answering the important questions no one thought to ask. Thank you. 1100usd is an amazing price tag from Sony. I was hoping this lens would be the same size as the PZ and it comes close. I was mainly looking forward to this lens as an alternative to the bulky/heavy 24-70 dg dn art (not everyone is a 6’4 tank like you) since the 85 1.4 art dg dn is my favourite lens.. making the 70mm end something I could consider giving up. I’ll be looking for a comparison review between this lens and the dg dn. Sucks that this is launched the day after the x100vi is revealed.. man that camera came up to 2450CAD after taxes (I hear it’s over 2800aud). Gotta hold out for a bit and maybe this’ll give me enough time to make an informed decision.
Love the video Jason! Would definitely get this over the 24-70 GM. Hopefully, Sony comes out with a wide ange 2.8, like a 16-24 f2.8! I have the F4 PZ 1635 and it’s great for vlogs on the zve1. Looking jacked as always. I’m herding to the gym now. Thanks!

My original plan was to go with three small primes at 24, 40, and 65 but like not having to change lenses. Also evaluating the Sigma 28-70/2.8 that I got used before I even knew this lens was coming. It’s almost as light. Also been thinking of the 20-70/4 G but always avoided f/4 for events. Do own the 24-105/4 G which is a great general purpose lens but a little heavy as well on the compact bodies. Too many choices for sure.
Loved the smoke when the camera popped up! great little touch. Easy pass on this one. Since I own a 16-35mm f2.8 GM I. which is a 24-52.5mm on an A7IV this isn't a "need" but not a bad lens.

Honestly I would recommend the sigma 24-70 because of value. GM II is a crazy good lens but pricey. But if price doesn’t matter 24-70 GM II for the win
I’d bet the gm is probably lagging a bit behind vs this one for normal use. Not having the same motors and the size made me not even consider the gmi. I went gmii and since I also have the a7cii, I want a small all arounder like this for carrying around and travel. Picture quality for stills I’d bet the gm is still a bit better.

I have an 85mm Prime for portraits for work portfolio.) It's great to drop the 50-70mm range for lower price, size and weight. Now wait 200 years for Canon RF. (I have 2 R8.) I envy you Sony guys. LOL Edit: My only zoom lens is the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 Art for EF. It weighs 1.2 kg with the control ring mount and I can't afford an RF L lens. Just for reference. In the dark gym situation I was in f2.8 was very handy otherwise I would have needed much more light for an f4. Still perfectly this having an f4 because if you have light you can just expose higher. Depth of field is another difference. Really the 20-70mm f4 is a great focal range and definitely one to consider
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema idk man, I had the 20-40 from Tamron and it was pretty small, I don't think that 10mm more in the long end would be a big deal size wise. Only problem with the Tamron is that it sucked with IBIS 👀
When I saw the weight and the size, I was Immediately sold. Then I saw how it zooms in and out, and I think it will not fit my flow on a gimbal. Pass for me
This gives size and weight over the 24-70mm. If weight is something someone like then it is for them. Otherwise I agree if size and weight are no concern. I would actually love a Sony 24-105mm F2.8 like canon… even though it weighs a truck load
I have been screaming and waiting for a 25-50/2.8 for 30 years... nobody made one, finally SONY did. This alone is worth switching systems for! Why? Because the 24-70/2.8 is a STUPID range with the 70mm end being practically useless. You'll probably carry a fast 85/1.4 or 85/1.8 so not having that extra 20mm is irrelevant, not to mention the fact that 2.8 is not exactly fast enough when you really want to do portraits. A 2.8/50 is perfect for street portraits and across the table shots. 24 is wide enough for most landscapes. If you like filming yourself with your arm extended, get a SMALLER CAMERA not a full frame mirrorless and save yourself some aching arms. Anyone complaining about the zoom range is missing the point! If it was any wider it will either have to be bigger or have smaller aperture. If that is what you want, get the 20-70/4 G. You give up a stop for 4mm on the wide end and 20mm on the long end. That lens is almost the same size (7mm longer and 5mm fatter).
If it were 20 - 50mm f2.8 it would've been THE best all round lens to get!
👍
Agreed
I was just going to comment this lol this would be the lens to get not sure where Sony is trying to go with a 24-50
I agree. 20-50mm means bigger and heavier because of the lens elements to get to 20mm at an f2.8
