Meet the GBA SP's Final Form: Anbernic RG35XX SP | Zu Reviews!
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 3 июл 2024
- 👉 @ANBERNIC sent over the latest in the H700/35XXP line to Zu and Gary, and *by jingo*, this one is a certified banger. With the last two releases in this line being kind of niche and situational, there was the potential that the SP could fall a little flat, but Anbernic knocked it out of the park with this one. Zu also tries the MuOS custom firmware!
The 35XXSP looks, feels, and plays like a supercharged GBA SP, and that's amazing. This thing is a concentrated nostalgia bomb, and the apex of the system-specific form factor experiments Anbernic has been doing for the last year. Some people might be turned off by the GBA-authentic dome switches, but otherwise there's very little to complain about with this one!

Is this the new EMPEROR of Clamshells?
Yes, also I love Software Button Noises. Depending on how you use them they can give a device personality. The PS Vita, DS, 3DS, PS2, Wii U, and many other Consoles all use Software Button Noises.
16:26 - 100% relatable. SOLD.
Please excuse my mid-life crisis.
I don’t think anbernic knows how much of a hit this is
Miyoo punching air right now lol.
Oh they know!
One day scientists will study how this man was able to make so much sense.
Dude, nostalgia meaning old and sad is the realest thing I’ve heard. GG
Zu is back to take over the channel once again!
I need a vacation. 😂
NO HE MUST NOT. I WILL BE BACK WITH ANOTHER VIDEO! - Stubbs
That little shelf around the top half of the battery compartment should actually be keeping the battery away from the cpu.
Love Zu! Great review and some solid laughs as always
Thanks so much!
Zu for president! Keep up the good work, love the videos!
I reluctantly accept this nomination and promise to give up my powers after the duration of the crisis.
I learned Zu reviews is worth the wait and I’m now more excited than ever for this device!!!
Thanks!
I find it funny how they have a case. None of their other handhelds had a case but the one that didn't need a case they made one for it.
It looks so good though! I ordered one I don't know what I'm going to put in it lol
@@YoungSinai I would have ordered it but I got mine directly from Anbernic and they didn't have the option. I thought it was for reviewers for a joke but AliExpress has them.
You're the best, Zu! Always a fan ❤
Thanks!
Awesome review. I'm so tempted for this however the patient individual inside me is waiting for the Miyoo Flip to release first
You are a great reviewer, first time coming across you today. Definitely got that sub from me!! You are funny, detailed, To-The-Point, and your cuts are great! Keep it up, glad I'll be watching you for handhelds now.
Thanks a lot for the kind words!
Just bought the transparent black one, can’t wait 😁
Awesome unboxing
I agree, this device is nice and cosy, and the buttons are not going to bother me at all. Awesome video brother 🔥🔥👍🏾
Oh my gosh I'd love a blue one that's my favorite color! 😍
Ambernic seems to be back on track in some ways. They need to focus on quality of buttons/pads/sticks though as a core aspect of their brand though.
btw anbernic should totally make a RG35XX DS as a better version compared to the Ayaneo Flip DS, as you may actually just use it for DS.
I'm going to buy this Handheld just for the Innovation!
The case helps stop scratches and dirt and debris, and you can more conveniently carry any accessories. A pouch might be all thats really needed
That's true!
Yes, I do remember Sears. Showing my age, but shopped there several times throughout the 80's and 90's
I pulled the trigger on a transparent blue one 😊.
Greetings from Tokyo 🇯🇵
I remember Sears! Lol. Maybe we can buy an Anbernic at Sears. Oh wait…..
I also got a lot of games at Hills, which was super regional.
@@zu_perler3011 Unfortunately we didn’t have any Hills in South Florida. Here’s a random store from my childhood I just thought of, Lionel’s Playworld.
I love this. Got up at 6AM to order a transparent blue 128GB with a case! Cant wait to play pokemon emerald, sapphire, and ruby again!
I set an alarm as well lol. Bleary eyed hoping I don't put my address in wrong.
Rg405V SP would be amazing
Great video, great games, closest console anbernic made that looks as close to an original
I am 100% on board for the continuation of the form factor stuff!
Too good! As a fellow "nostalgic" person (ahem) I approve of the mid life crisis and total panic brought on by it! It forces you to live in the moment because there might not BE a next moment....sigh....anyway, I pre-ordered one in transparent black just because and I know I'm gonna love it to pieces (many actually...) like I did my (many) OG SP's
Ordered one today for my hubby....
I was already stoked for this that I got up at 5 to purchase and within 15 minutes of them going on sale, they had already taken the money from Paypal, but this video made me even more excited. Zu!!! Record you breaking the hinge so we can see how hard (or easy it is). You can always buy another 😂 Either way, LOVED the enthusiasm and thank you for sharing your first impressions.
I purchased mine too, and shipping starts on the 22nd! I got the see thru blue one. Which one did you get?
@@Augrills I got the blue as well. I am looking forward to getting it... Just sucks it's not supposed to be here until June 1st.
I can remember when the Sears near where I lived had a 3DO that you could try...those were the good ol' days...
Simpler times.
@@retrohandhelds absolutely
I bought the silver one the moment I could. The clamshell game boy was my first console.
Mine are on their way. Clamshell happiness.
I do have to note though, they didn't supply a case so spend the extra 10 US for official case on the Anbernic site. Worth the extra investment. The heatsink is an easy install. 1mm copper and you're good to go.
can use an adhesive thermal pad maybe
What can I tell ya, Zu? Like a wise man once sang, making your way in the world today takes everything ya got.
Based
Lol I would love this one however bills coming in. I will wait for a sale or a birthday...or Xmass. Its awesome looking. Its defo a GBA Contender
I called sears everyday for like 4 weeks waiting for a pokemon red or blue back in 98'. Finally i got a call one day from sears saying they had a pokemon red returned because the kid wanted blue instead and if i hurried they'd hold onto for me 😊 little did i know that day was the start of a life long love affair 😂
I was confused for a minute. How did you apply the GBA logo on the display frame at the bottom?
It's on there by default as a bezel in stock and in muOS.
Best handheld of 2024, its perfect for classic games and the price is excellent.
Yes Zu I remember SEARS, Big K, Toys R Us, Radio Shack and Circuit City! 90's kidz rule!!! 🤓 👍
Right on!
Ive played Aria of Sorrow at least 4-5 times
still have my sp and cart
Great video! I don't agree that they should do the candy bar GBA. I think That although it hasn't been perfect 1-1 replicas, there are more than enough of those that have come on to the market and I'm personally over it. I also don't have any real nostalgia for that particular GBA. For me it was an exercise in frustration
I set my alarm just in case they sold out and got the blue one, the color I wanted. I don't need the case but after I made the order I realized I didn't see an option, maybe it's included? Not sure what I'd put in it, I guess just chargers/cables for travel? This handheld does not need it.
"...because *cough* i'm mildly incompetent..." We have all been there at some point. We all just hope our friends are there in that moment to point and laugh. That's what life is about right?
All jokes aside, I knew I was going to like this one and after Russ, ETA, Taki, you, Stubs, retro tech dad and even the phawx just started singing it's praises like a heavenly choir... you bet I immediately caved and ordered the clear blue.
My Only complaint? No metallic blue or atomic purple.
🤣🙌
Fantastic review! How does the silver variant of the RG35XX SP feel? Is it a slippery material or more matte?
It definitely has texture. Not slippery at all. Feels like OEM 90s Nintendo plastic.
Didn't realize SEARS was completely gone.
Dude, I think you're the 1st person I ever heard of buying video games at Sears.
The Sears Wishbook arriving was a seminal moment in any child's life in the 80's and 90's.
Sears was a great ace in the pocket! They usually had hard to find games cause no one thought to look there!
I remember STACKS of Dreamcasts on sale after the console was discontinued at Sears selling for like next to nothing.
@@retrohandhelds Maybe it was a regional thing my friend. I only ever got or looked at games at Toys R Us, KB Toys, or Kmart.
KB Toys... now that's a name I haven't heard in a long time...
Zu is the funniest handheld reviewer
I would put a piece of aluminum foil between the chip and battery.
I'm 40, so every console & handheld I owned from Atari 2600 to GBA SP & N64/PS1 my dad bought from Sears...I feel ya on the old part Zu lol. Wouldn't change it for the world though
I just turned 41 and I'm not sure how I got to this point. Seems like yesterday I was 20. lol
I was curious how does it feel to play one handed, like pokemon, jrpgs, etc? One of the best features of these "vertical" layout.
Not too bad. The part you're holding is a square, almost like the RG280V, but the screen rests on your index finger and stabilizes it.
@@retrohandhelds sweet. I loved my 280v but it was lacking power and screen. May throw a pop socket on this bad boy lol.
I actually like that noise 😅
tbh they should've made it 2x the original size of a SP.
0:20 - hands up to the most realistic graphics on Game Boy screen
Does the sd card come with some games already preinstalled or do you have to install them all manually?
Yes, pre-installed.
i dont have a pc so i hope i will find a way to ftp ffviii on it
Maybe i'm the odd one out, but I don't see the point of using a screen protector for a clamshell device. Thoughts?
Zu, do you remember the Sears air conditioning commercials from the 90s?? Is it just me lol??
Hahah
GB Station is the RG35xx SP at home.
I was planning on giving it to my kids, but the oldest went straight to the MM+ and doesn't have time for famiclone nonsense.
@@retrohandhelds Smart kid
I have an old Tribal GBA SP, a GB Station & a Powkiddy V90.
The GB Station rarely gets picked up.
The A & B buttons are reversed, silly.
RG35XX SP?
Me want.
NOW!!!!
Is this not gonna' be the new Miyoo Mini in that it's going to be held up as the golden egg of mini handheld emulators?
Time will tell. My miyoo mini plus is my favorite but this being a clam shell makes it so much more pocketable
3:45 i would reconsider buying it
Zu wants the Powkiddy A30 or GB-60a pro aka Game Station
Does the stock os have a video player?
😍
15:09 - Yes, I am an expert at acquisitions. I also have amazing hair. Yes.
Story time: I owned a GBA SP for about five minutes when I was around 12 or 13. One random Sunday Dad and I were at the Ford dealer after hours looking at used cars. Small town Kentucky didn't have much to do, okay. They had a beautiful Mercury Grand Marquis or Ford Crown Victoria (after like 1997 they were identical except for the grille insert and heckblende - an actual word that refers to the fancy taillight colored plastic between the taillights on the trunk of some cars) that was unlocked. So, we sat in it. He had me get in the back to see if it was roomy enough and I notice a bit of a Ziploc sticking out between the cushions. Yada, yada, yada, later Dad's on the other side of the lot and I decided to go back and investigate that bag. Curiosity is a female dog.
In that bag was a red GBA SP and some expensive Mario game carts. I had, and still have, a white launch GBA just like Zu's and desperately coveted that SP's backlit screen and rechargeable battery. Anyways, when we got back to our car to go cruise the Dodge dealer Dad saw me with it and had to do Dad things like express compassion for others. He demanded I put it back where I got it and lock the doors so nobody else could steal it.
His logic was that the salesmen were often allowed to borrow used cars off the lot, which is a common practice at dealers everywhere, and one of them probably borrowed it for a vacation and their dumb kid left the SP behind. When the dealership opened up the next day they'd probably be looking for it first thing...
I never did own an SP. I ended up trucking along with my OG GBA for a few more years and then when the money worked out jumped to a DS Lite. I still have the DS Lite. I don't think it's nearly as comfortable as the OG GBA or the SP, but, it's fine. I don't actually play that much DS on my DS. It's mostly used as an ersatz GBA SP.
What a complete waste of time this comment was, eh?
I appreciate the review. I felt that Zu made a lot of sense. His prediction about this thing selling like hotcakes came true, from what I've read. I don't really have anything else to add about the review or the handheld itself. Both were top notch. I expect that out of Zu, but, I am pleasantly surprised about the 35SP.
Matt Davis is one of the best RUclips commenters in the game. He never has an off night.
Do we know when these will start to ship? I haven't seen any updates other than "your order is confirmed." It was ordered on launch day.
People are starting to see shipment notifications as of this morning according to our Discord.
Mine shipped on may 21, the day you wrote this. Its still in china though.
Zu you are the bomb I just love your videos and I love your personality and you’re the truth to your devices. Love it thank you thank you💙👍🏼
Thanks!
can we install standalone mame and run game & watch games? the retroarch mame and handheld electronic core aren't great
Can someone use original SP accessories with this. Imagine adding a speaker or some dramatic add ons
That would honestly be amazing. I wonder if I could find a GBA to USB-C adapter for all the squiggle-arm light accessories I had.
Are the buttons fatiguing after 1 hour of use? I heard they are stiff
Not for me.
@@retrohandhelds thanks for responding. How do they compare in terms of effort and loudness compared to the clicky Trimui Smart Pro?
RK3588 chipset is great but i’ve heard it consumes alot of power but the RK3576 i truely think will be the new performance benchmark for cheap handhelds
Am I the only one saying that knife is begging for a good cleaning and sharpening too!?!? A sharp and maintained tool won't let you down and is so much safer in my opinion.
I don't know anyone that likes button sounds, but every company seems to default to having them on, for such an irritating feature to be the default, it makes me wonder if it is some sort of regulated accessibility requirement as the entire electronics industry couldn't really be that stupid could they?
I've worked in the small electronics industry for over a decade and 20 years experience in IT. When you see these odd features that nobody seems to like, rest assured that it's based on a Chinese perspective of what us westerners want in products. Having spoken to dozens of (very well-spoken English) executives at these HK/Shenzhen electronics manufacturers, I've asked about this a lot. They think Americans (i.e. Americanized westerners) really want: Big, consecutive Numbers, so everything gets a giant model number. They think we want FIDGETS! Button sounds, loose cases with play on the panels. Clicky, wobbly, fidgety. They also think we're going to always accept that perceived language barrier as a hurtle we can't get past, and then use it to dismiss customer service requests. Keep in mind, too, that the concept of Customer Service is American and not generally a part of Eastern business practices. They don't feel they are being rude stereotyping half of the planet and the people buy all the junk they make without much push back. So, maybe it is what we want.
Tl;dr: Chinese manufacturers think Americans want what sells the fastest. We buy things with these odd features, despite them being there. You vote on these features with your dollar. And you already bought one, didn't you?
Ok, I'm almost afraid to ask....how long is Ambernic shipping to the US?
A week or two. Depends on if there's a stray Chinese holiday that comes out of nowhere.
@@retrohandhelds Great! Thanks, now the waiting begins. 🤣
Man i want this one but im saving for rp2s ,so confused 😂
Sears, CompUSA, Circut City. I memeber..
Hi can u help me I have an anbernic rg552 . Is there a good firmware u recommend.that will be battery efficient and good UI..thx so much... battery drains fast with batocera amberlec os no sleep mode
I wonder if this could be undervolted and get better battery life and less heat, cause let’s be honest I’m not gonna play the newer stuff.
4.5 inch screen would be ideal
Not just the screen and lack of analogs that make PSP and N64 not a good pick to play on this thing, it's the performance of those consoles that's not good. It's baffling to hear N64, Dreamcast, and especially PSP to be even remotely mentioned in the conversation of being playable on this thing. Sure, there might be a game or two that works perfect, but this just isn't an N64, Dreamcast, or PSP handheld with the chipset that we have here..
Yeah I wouldn't think it'd be very fun to play a lot of psp or n64 games on here, but the fact they can indicates it can handle any lower systems without a problem and means you can throw some extra shaders on those if that's your thing
Keepretro has them
I am just grumpy and old.
Can you add another Emulator on the system and if you can how
The firmware button sounds are cute though. 😢
We found the one person who likes them! ♥

I would argue that 353p is already pretty close to the horizontal gba in terms of design.
21:24 fir gba what game are you playing?
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
@@retrohandhelds thank you
Haha i bought my dreamcast from Sears back in the day.

Where does she keep getting those cats?
@@retrohandhelds She must have a cat portal Somewhere :-). Arya of Sorrow hardtype, and Reloaded add elemental shananigans to the mix you should check them out. I can not play the original anymore caos reprise is Also a rogue like Arya of Sorrow:-)
the h700 cpu right against the battery with no heat shield or sink....
the battery is the heatsink , im staying away from that hazard, in my country it will explode on a summer day
thing is really bad designed
Can you guys help me❤ this console is so "meta" it is really Impossible for a small Channel to produce content for this right now, right? Legendary stuff for Russ, Está, Taki and so on right? To BE fully honest zu it raíses a lot of red flag, the warmth, the quality of buttons and the D-Pad, should i go with my head for 35xx H, or with my heart 35xx SP, since Gameboy Advance is my favourite console, thank you😊
If you don't mind losing $70 on the off-chance that something goes wrong, I'd say go with the SP.
@@retrohandhelds i Guess with the heat sink mod it Will b ok, is not that really hard to do If there is space, just wanted to not care about hardware when i buy a console i replaced membranes, buttons, batteries, screens lol. But might BE the right device for some GBA content :-)
How did you let magnet man put out a video on this before you? You're slipping ZU!!!
USPS conspiracy!
Gonna laugh my ass off if this thing can run roadrash 64
Why do most reviewers use Retroarch to play GBA games rather than using the standalone emulator in the console? I find the standalone emulator easier to use and has HD filter for GBA games.
@ge-ge-ge7953 mostly for the unified UI and hotkey consistency of Retroarch, you can run from Atari to Dreamcast all with the same program, hot keys, and interface. Nothing wrong with standalone at all. RA also has HD filters for GBA and others.
Add sd card
Ohhhh so tempting, I have to force myself to not buy the SP.
lol
Put battery in direct contact to the cpu is the dumbest thing anbernic could do. Hard pass because this.
It's not touching the CPU, but its just above it, there's a very small gap of air.
@@retrohandheldsfew millimeters didn't change things. High temperature is the worst thing for battery, not mentioning the zero heat dissipation for the Cpu stuffed under
@@diomaiaal yeah its not ideal at all, we need some kind of heat shield
Too much noise on the switch buttons. It would annoy the hell out the person next to you in bed or on another quiet place.
