We include a cable from the PS3 A/V port directly to Game Capture HD. No more messing with 5 component/audio cables, and the output is HDMI. The reason you can't capture in HDMI from the PS3 is that Sony has always enabled their HDCP copy protection over the HDMI port. The Xbox doesn't do that, it only turns on HDCP copy protection when you're watching a DVD or Netflixing with protected content.
Yes, you can render the clips, in HD with the software that we include with the device. The Elgato Game Capture HD software includes a built-in editor for basic trimming tasks, and you can export every recording to a straight-up MP4 file.
thanks for the quick reply.. youre the only company out there who responds to their products users. thank you so much. i think ill buy your recorder as its the best on the market
Try this: Hold down the control key, and open the Game Capture HD settings. From there, go to the "Advanced" tab and see if the "Update firmware" button is available. If yes, please update and let us know if the issue persists.
1) Yes, it will work as follows: PS3 --> AV Cable (included) --> Game Capture IN --> Game Capture OUT HDMI --> TV. 2) Yes, it will. 3) Win 7 and later.
Try this: Hold down the control key, and click on the Game Capture HD settings, then go to the advanced tab. If possible, please click the "Update firmware" button. Let us know if that fixes the issue.
Elgato Game Capture HD just needs to be powered via a USB source. This does not have to be from your computer. You could plug it directly into one of your PS3's USB ports and it would work.
Game Capture HD needs to be powered via USB for the passthrough to work. If you turn off your PC, just take the Game Capture HD's USB cable and plug it into your PS3 or any other USB power source.
If your console is plugged into it then yes. But that does not mean it has to be connected to your computer all the time, it just has to be connected to some USB power source (could be a USB port on your console, for example).
That is up to you. We have a feature in the software called flashback which lets you record your footage after you have played, or you can capture while playing.
I had issues but finally figured it out. Plug in everything like it says, BUT. Switch your PS3 off with the switch in the back. Hold the power button and switch the switch ON. Hold the power button until you get two beeps. Then your TV will flash/get multicolored and then you edit the display settings. Check off "1080i" ONLY and then select "Component" and Finish
Game Capture HD needs to be powered through USB, but this does not have to be from your laptop. You can connect Game Capture HD's USB cable directly to your PS3, for example.
Check back at the Elgato web site on May 30th, we'll have a list of online retailers by then. I'm sure it will be on Amazon. 720p recording is about 5 Mbps (you can configure it manually if you wish) so the default setting is about 3 GB per hour of capture.
Hey guys, if your TV screen is black yet your Elgato Software shows your playstations screen, switch the two HDMI cables on the back of your TV. I had slot one for TV -> PS3 & slot two for TV -> Elgato, and when I switched them it started working. Hope this helps!
TV -> Ps3 is talking about the HDMI cable that goes from my TV to my playstation, and TV -> Elgato is the HDMI cable that goes from my TV to my Elgato. Originally, I had the HDMI that went from my TV to my PS3 in HDMI slot 1 in the back of my TV, but my TV would go black when I tried using the elgato. When you put the HDMI cable that goes from your elgato to your tv in slot 1 on the back of your tv and the hdmi cable that goes from your tv to your ps3 in slot 2 it should work; or at least it worked for me. Best of luck!
The HDMI output on Xbox is unprotected when playing games. On PS3 the HDCP copy protection is always on, so you have to use component out. Elgato Game Capture converts the component video to HDMI, you really won't notice the difference.
yeah it was the software... i couldn't imagine it was the software but it's true i installed the BETA test version and it worked almost 100% now :) can't wait to the new version
Thank you very much for your help! It was very necessary to record videos with 1080i without any expensive technical accesories. You HAVE to take our positive comment, 'cause it was VERY VERY helpful! Thanks, thanks, thanks for your idea!!!
You'll need to get the PS3 AV to component cable (the one with the 5 plugs) and connect it to the Game Capture port. Insert the piggyback RCA audio cables from the headset between the Game Capture RCA audio inputs and the component/audio cable.
Please update to the latest software that was released yesterday. You can do so by going to "check for updates" in the GC HD software. This should solve your problem.
We ship a special PS3 cable that goes on the "in" side of the Elgato Game Capture HD. On the "out" side you have HDMI. Ensures awesome quality with the fewest cables possible.
Hi - regarding the black screens showing up - this can happen with some older TV models. Please go into the "Device Settings" and then to the "Advanced Settings" tab. You will see a slider for "Component Compatibility". Adjust the value of this slider until you find one that works for your TV. If you continue to have problems, please contact our tech support team directly and we will help you out asap.
This is a Good Video, but I think you should show you actually hooking up the component cables in the video and maybe explain that the signal from Ps3 is protected so you cannot record in HDMI. Just look at some of the questions you poor guys got here. This is the Easiest Game capture device I have ever used. Thank you Elgato for making this nifty little capture device. My only Gripe is if I want to record in HDMI on Ps3 I have to use a Screen capture program, but it still Loooks very Purdy
Sony has decided that you should not be allowed to capture anything via HDMI so you have to use component going from your PS3 to the GC HD. You can capture in awesome HD quality anyways.
Make sure to restart your PS3 display settings after connecting Game Capture HD. Your PS3 does not automatically recognize that it needs to output video via the Component cable.
Already responded on another page - please contact our tech support directly there is not much we can do on RUclips forums. Sorry for your trobules I'm sure we can get it figured out.
@TheJ DoubleD That is a preview, it is not meant to look good or play smoothly but once u render everything becomes smooth and nice with no lagg unless the game lags
Make sure that you don't have a headset this could mess it up also make sure that you have the settings on your ps3 to go through AV/SCART for audio on xbox same unless you are using HDMi
Hi. I had the same problem but I recently fixed it. The first thing you want to do is take the PS3 HDMI from your TV out. (Take the HDMI from your TV not the PS3) And then you want to connect your HDMI from your PS3 to your "HDMI out". And you're done!
I have both the compent cable and an hdmi cable plugged into the ps3. The compent cable goes to the elgato and then an hdmi from the elgato to my hdmi 2 port on the tv. The other hdmi cable just goes from the ps3 to the hdmi 1 port on the tv like it used to before I got the elgato. So now when you dont want to use the elgato just select hdmi 1 channel on your tv, and when you are recording select hdmi 2 channel.
On the Game Capture HD software you must change the settings to component and not HDMI. I was just playing around on the software when my screen was black and when I changed it to component I saw it on my TV. You must have the software open.
You're telling me. I had to figure out myself for the 8 and 2 thing. I have not tried to do a recording test for MGS4 but sounds like it's bad. I was going to plan to do a playthrough of mine for MGS4 also. I really hope there is a fix for this black screen problem.
Please contact our tech support team via support.elgato.com so we can work with you directly to solve your problem.

Yes you can. You can set the voice settings to output the voices to the speakers, which lets you capture your friends voices.

What genre of game would you like us to post?
You can record from 1080i/29.97 and 720p/59.97. The 1080i recordings are converted to 1080p/59.97 in software once you export them, in software.
Absolutely! You can even record in a different resolution while gaming in 1080i.
That is up to you. We have a feature in the software called flashback which lets you record your footage after you have played, or you can capture while playing.
You have no idea how HELPFUL this was!!!! I was soooo triggered until I did what you said here! THANK YOU!!!!
Thank you for your feedback, we appreciate it!

Just connect them directly to your PS3 via optical audio. Make sure to enable multi audio output in the PS3 audio settings.
Yes it does. Have a look at one of the many quality samples we have uploaded.
OK, you got it. Downloading it now...
Yes, you will still be able to use your gaming headset. Which one do you have?
Please use the special A/V cable included with the Game Capture HD to connect to the PS3. This will allow 1080p recording.

Yes you can play in 1080i HD while recording. You can even play in 1080i while recording in 720p.
Whatever you select in the Game Capture HD software. You can switch between the 2 devices there.
Uploaded a clip from Sonic Generations. Skyrim's still downloading to the Xbox. Enjoy!

Yes. We're going to write up a FAQ, but it is pretty easy.
yes you can , PS3 cables are included in the package.
On the "in" port you use the special PS3 cable we provide. On the "out" side you use HDMI.
No, the software only works with the Elgato Game Capture HD hardware.
Please update to the latest software that was released yesterday. You can do so by going to "check for updates" in the GC HD software. This should solve your problem.
I just got mine, and well, all I have to say is, Great Job!

Yes, do check the 1080p box :)
You can record in 720p or 1080i with a PS3 as well. You can also play in 1080i and record in 720p.
Yes you can do that but the GC HD still needs to be powered via USB in some way.
No you do not. Elgato Game Capture HD just need to be powered via USB in some way. This can be directly from a USB port of your PS3, for example.
You need to download the software from our website.
You can connect an Xbox and a PS3 at the same time, yes.
We ship a special PS3 cable that goes on the "in" side of the Elgato Game Capture HD. On the "out" side you have HDMI. Ensures awesome quality with the fewest cables possible.
yes it does, it records all party chats and console sounds but not your own voice

SO I constantly need to be plugged into my family's only laptop to play??

CaptainMaki is right - we include everything you need in the box.
It's coming...the game is still downloading to our Xbox.

Yes, you can play in 1080p.
Have you connected your PS3 to the Elgato Game Capture HD using the supplied A/V cable?
Disregard my last message. I used this on my xbox 360 previously and forgot to change the settings in the elgato software back to PS3. Thank you.
Please try plugging the USB cable into a different USB port.
You can use your PC screen as well.
Make sure to restart your PS3 display settings after connecting Game Capture HD. Your PS3 does not automatically recognize that it needs to output video via the Component cable.
You can use a HDMI converter.
WHY DOES IT ALWAYS HAVE A BLACK SCREEN WHEN I PRESS COMPONENT D-TERMINAL?????
how did you fix that problem snopym3x ?
I also get black screen after selecting component
Already responded on another page - please contact our tech support directly there is not much we can do on RUclips forums. Sorry for your trobules I'm sure we can get it figured out.

Make sure your input and cords are all working also make sure that you have everything connected correctly
@TheJ DoubleD That is a preview, it is not meant to look good or play smoothly but once u render everything becomes smooth and nice with no lagg unless the game lags
It comes with the PS3 cable, an HDMI cable and the USB cable. So everything you need to get started right out of the box.
mine didn’t come with a ps3 cable
Make sure that you don't have a headset this could mess it up also make sure that you have the settings on your ps3 to go through AV/SCART for audio on xbox same unless you are using HDMi
Yes you can.
No. Everything needed to record your PS3 comes with the game capture HD.
You need to use the special PS3 cable on the "in" side that we ship. For the moment you will need to buy it online in Australia.
YES thank you so much. I cant really see in my head how to do it but im poor at visualising things like that so thanks for the quick reply
Yep that's no problem.
Yes, it comes with all the wires. It can be a laptop or PC.
max res for component is 1080i* you should only select 1080p if you can find a way to bypass the HDCP on HDMI
Please contact our tech support they will be able to get you set up.
great tutorial! so great that my PS3 can't display pictures anymore after following this video. great job you clowns!
Hi. I had the same problem but I recently fixed it.
The first thing you want to do is take the PS3 HDMI from your TV out. (Take the HDMI from your TV not the PS3) And then you want to connect your HDMI from your PS3 to your "HDMI out". And you're done!
You can record PS3 in up to 1080i just like the Xbox.
HDMI cannot be used when connecting a PS3 to the Elgato. If you have any further issues, please contact our support team.
On the Game Capture HD software you must change the settings to component and not HDMI. I was just playing around on the software when my screen was black and when I changed it to component I saw it on my TV. You must have the software open.
Yes just go on amazon and look up HDMI to AV/SCART :)
Right, that's why people are using the product to capture awesome PS3 gameplay in exactly that setup everyday ....
You're telling me. I had to figure out myself for the 8 and 2 thing. I have not tried to do a recording test for MGS4 but sounds like it's bad. I was going to plan to do a playthrough of mine for MGS4 also. I really hope there is a fix for this black screen problem.
the cap card is powered by the usb cable going into your pc so it needs to be turned on for it to work.
Make sure you enable "Multi Audio Output" in your PS3's Audio Settings.
