- Thanks to the Wii U eShop, you can play a small selection of Nintendo DS games, including Super Mario 64 DS! Having never played it before, and being a HUGE fan of Super Mario 64, I thought it was time I gave it a shot. What a strange experience it turned out to be...

It’s crazy to me that people have never even seen what’s one of the biggest parts of my childhood
Feelsoldman
@SnakebittenACE 7 same
I’ve wanted to watch this/have it!
@@DGR_Dave I would like to see you play the rest of my childhood game some day.
Indeed
The people in the twitch chat saying,” Is this a mod?” Is cracking me up 😂
so many youngens dont know what theyre missin
Stinky Stinky Stonkbroker I know right?
Omg did they? I was there for the last hour of the stream. I’m glad I wasn’t there when they said that. I would have got so triggered 😤
@@mackowacko5166 i played this game so much as a kid especially the mini games i would spend 20 bucks just on a game that was only the minigames lol
Stinky Stinky Stonkbroker same lol, I play sm64ds so much too, I always liked trying to pull off speed run strats, like getting on peach’s tower before getting all the stars.
Dave: I'm a Mario 64 purist
Me: I'm a Mario 64 DS purist
Same! I love that game.
Same here
big facts. I've never even touched the original lol
@@skennyboy9702 Me too
Same I still have the cover, manual, and game
Thats my childhood right there

This was probably my first Mario Game and I never regret it

@@donnaasbury Me too yooo
That game was literally my childhood
Same, I played it on my R4 lol

@@cooolgameralt i used R4 too very sadly it doesn't work anymore:(

Same lol the only issue with the game was that multiplayer didnt work at all
7:16 The painting they used for Jolly Roger Bay in SM64DS is the same as the one they used in the first Japanese release of the original SM64.
I honestly like this remake more than the original game...
*Just gonna set up a wall so that no one attacks me.*
It was very cool.
Same here i was my childhood game(mainly the minigames) along with New Super Mario Bros and Animal Crossing Wild World
I'll help fortify that wall, if u want.
Just wanna go to the casino with luigi.
Most people that view 64DS content grew up with this version, so you'll have little push back on this opinion.
There's a clear air of nostalgia in the comment section.
Well it’s true
Your reaction at 17:13 makes me so, so happy
OMG I THOUGHT YOU QUIT
i used to watch u so long ago bro
Let’s leave dave to figure out the wing cap alone took me 6302638 years
damn georgia is more than 6302638 years old, respecc
@@merbudd thank you , young man
Lol literally, I beat that whole game not knowing about those power-ups. Definitely one of the most nostalgic experiences of my childhood. You can’t beat playing some ds games and struggling for so long trying to unlock those secrets…memories 😌
I did eventually find out how to unlock them lol
@The_MLS_Team yes. I mean beating the main story, not all 150 stars
@@stevenmcburney8167 Same here! I didn't activate the ? Switch until I read about it online 😂😂
This was the first version of Mario 64 I played . . . i feel like a lot of people hate it though, idk why
Edit: the controls for the DS Version felt more normal to me than the 64 version, so it's probably just what you played first that influences what controls you like more.
Yep that's true. I had no problem playing with Y to run. In fact the original feels weird cause I feel I shouldn't be running without holding down a button lol
JOKES ON YOU, I PLAYED THE ORIGINAL 64 FIRST!
and i prefer 64ds, controls just feel better. other than sliding into the void just because i fell from one owl.
I remember sitting hours on my couch drawing on the title screen and those hours were some of the best in my life.
(:
:)
:D
;)
D:
Don't forget that Luigi can use the Vanish Cap and once you get Wario, he can use the Metal Cap. Mario can use the Wing Cap and Yoshi can breathe fire.
Mario is also the only one with access to the balloon power.
AHA! YOU FORGOT balloon mario
super mario 64 DS was literally my childhood oh my god! seeing this makes me so nostalgic
Same thing here.
Bruh its so weird cuz i know the move sets and yoshi does ground-pound i just want to scream it so bad but he wont hear me
I screamed at him anyway. Then the police showed up. Now I'm being taken to a "mental hospital". Lol.
Man I'm just screaming at my screen lmao
Man, it sucks when he doesn't read the chat where someone told how to do it.
"I'm gonna try to go into it with an open mind"...
as yoshi's disembodied head is bobbing onto the screen... 🤣🤣🤣
This is unlocking a lot of memories I completely forgot about
*Yoshi notices the door is locked*
*Lakitu flies over* "Oh no! Looks like the door is locked!"
Dave: Oh! We got the Lakitu skip!
xD
Well he got half a lakitu skip…
@@myrealusername2193 The chain of events lead me to believe that Lakitu is meant to show up after you tried the door. In that sense, it's not a skip at all, because that's what was supposed to happen.
@@RyushiroK oh ok lol whoops
I just have the feeling that Dave isn't using the manual camera controls that is a really good way to increase the maniability in this game
"I'm in a tight spot" he says squished under king whomp
lol
:OOOOOOOOOO oh no
I loved Mario 64 ds when I was a kid!
I was hoping to see Dave's reaction to all the touch screen minigames. However, they might not be new to Dave if he's already played some of them in New Super Mario Bros.
Some of them weren't ported over to nsmb
this might be annoying to control but that's the quality I expect from a remake, they changed/fixed/renewed SO MANY things
you...you expect a remake to be annoying to control?
@@hessxpress didn't u see the "BUT"? :D I could have written it a little better but anyway :D
Better during the development of the game, the button for running could have an option as a toggle.
4:43 "Yoshi's bald?"
He called him bald FACED.
Yoshi CLEARLY doesn't have Mario's 'stache.
Just wanna have a little chat with the guy who subbed with ‘this is an atrocity’. Just a small heart-to-heart.
You want a hitman-I mean a conversationalist to join you? I’m down
False advertising. There’d only be one heart left.
One of the first gems I played on the DS way back when.
Ah, this takes me back to the good ol days
17:58 LOLL I thought the evil piano was removed in the DS version .... until it suddenly attacked!
And OMG that scream is just so genuinely funny and cute lolll
All the modern 3D Mario games map crouch/ground pound to a shoulder button I'm surprised it took him that long to realize he even had a ground pound
Especially since he knows the N64 version so well
This is my favorite version of SM64
Same, it's perfect imo. Everyone complaining about the controls is annoying, yeah it wasn't made for D pad but over time you start to feel comfortable with it with the control stick, then it's fine. But I never had to get used to it because it was my introduction to Mario 64 overall. Great port either way, love all the extra content and awesome ideas. Forever my favorite version of Super Mario 64.
Don’t know why people complain about the run button either when 3D Land/World uses it as well
Better the run was a toggle but I'm fine with it anyways.
Also, this version is better, since it's 2 screens.
This is the Super Mario 64 I grew up with
Same
Lakitu never got hurt because he's the cameraman
All characters can ground pound and long jump, Yoshi can ground pound but can't break any bricks, Mario, Wario, and Luigi can break bricks when ground pounding.
There's some useful information there Dave_DGR!
Bby Penguin: gets eaten and prays for his life
Dave: awwwww😍🥰
64 DS is a really good and worthy remake IMO
Man we need this remade on the switch or something imagine
especially considering how the DS was WEAKER than the N64.
@@MyPhoneHas13PercentBatterywait it was? If that's true that's crazy like holy shit
Not THAT much weaker
This game, Pokemon Platinum, Mario Party DS, Pokemon Soul Silver, Solatorobo, Pokemon Black, DBZ Supersonic Warriors 2, Mario and Sonic at the Winter Olympics, and Kingdom Hearts ReCoded,
All these games helped make the DS so nostalgic in my eyes.
This game came out years before I was born, yet still somehow managed to be a massive part of my life
thats nearly impossible man, i think. You're real lucky
I was born in 2009 and I have a lot of good memories on the DS, 3DS, and the PS3 just to name a few. I am very fond of those memories and I’m glad I was this lucky
@@BlueeJ I was born in 2008, and same. SM64DS and Pokemon HG probably had the biggest impact on me.
This game is my childhood. One of my favorite games of all time, and watching Chuggaaconroy (spell check needed) play it is very nostalgic as well. Love the inclusion of some beta stuff from the original! Side note, I don’t know why people complain about a run button here when 3D Land and 3D World use one as well
I ordered a Super Mario 64 DS cartridge two months ago and it arrived on the day he uploaded this! Now I can replay my childhood!
I love how Dave called the switch star a crystal orb
Tbh, if the DS had an analog control, I could see this actually becoming the preferred (if not definitive) version of the game.
Yeah, main "argument" against the game that i've seen is "The D-Pad is so uncomfortable"
although if that was done, it'd probably be as simple as "WELL, MARIO HAS LESS POLY"
Love this! Just 100% beat SM64DS a few months ago, felt like a mega achievement for my childhood self :) I haven't played any other console version myself but I can agree the controls are still a little difficult! I found the control stick on my 3ds (which I used) actually helped a little. Excited to see if u keep playing and to see you discover more secrets!!
I love this game so much!! Not only is it one of the few 3D Mario games with Yoshi, my favorite character, and you actually get to play as him in 3D, but the added content that wasnt in the original and all the really fun levels and challenges are amazing!! One of my best memories was really enjoying the level to beat Big Boo to get Luigi, with how interesting it was to have to listen for the Boo's laughter. I even had a dream of exploring that area myself once. I fought Big Boo again with Luigi and got a pretty funny response too! Luigi is actually also one of my favorite characters and my other favorite to play as, with how high he can jump and how he floats down! All of that in a nice game for the DS! I still need to beat it though...
I loved so much how you were reacting to the new things added in SM64DS, it kinda reminds me of me as a child discovering new thigns
Why does everyone hate this game? Super Mario 64 DS was my childhood. I still enjoy playing it.
They probably didn't have a well childhood on the ds
@@Peep2401 They can't appreciate the beauty of the ds. RIP.
The controlls
My first ASMR experience is that music in Dire Dire Docks 😌 loved it, still do
Anything Mario 64 related, even the DS version, is always perfectly nostalgic and fun to watch ahh
This game BADLY needs an HD remaster. As classic as the original 64 is, this is literally "Mario 64 Definitive Edition"
i just rediscovered this gem. i used to play it as a very small child at the Eagle's Nest in giant eagle. for those who don't know what those are, Giant Eagle is a supermarket in the US and the Eagle's Nest was a daycare center they had for parents who wanted their kids to play and have fun while they did their shopping. the Eagle's Nest no longer exists. but, back when it was a thing, my dad used to put me in there and they had the N64 and only 3 games, but the games they had were really good. they had the super mario 64, a Spyro game, and some Tom and Jerry game. at the time, because i was too little to really understand how the game worked, i never made it past the first painting in mario and thought it was too hard. i decided to play this game again just yesterday and already have 25 stars and 24 lives. having such a blast from the past
I'd love to see more of this sometime! It's my own childhood you're playing here!
Cool you're playing this. This game was my only mario 64 experience and i thought nobody else ever played it.
I wish we could have gotten the features of this game as an option in 3d all-stars so it could be played with normal controls but that would have required a small amount of effort on Nintendos part.
Fun fact: The bubble painting is actually the Japanese painting from the OG SM64.
I've always liked this version better than the original.
6:22 DAVE WHAT THE HECK MAN!!!!
I’m practically screaming at the screen PRESS R! Whenever he mentions he can’t ground pound.
This was the very first mario game I've ever played and I still say that SM64 DS still holds up, it's so much fun
Then there is me who never played super Mario 64 before and always played 64 DS
7:09 it’s so painful seeing how long it takes you to even try experimenting pushing the R button to jump
I grew up with this game. Really appreciate that you're giving it some love. Also I love the minigames.
My childhood!! As long as you liked it just a little bit, then I’m satisfied.
Oh my god ... that level inside the Mario painting was so cool. I'd forgotten that completely.
I barely even remember much of it, even upon seeing it, other than the fact that it existed. It's so cool~
2:50 BOB-OMB DRIP!!!!
Ah yes, playing a remake of an N64 game on the DS on the WII U... genius.
"So we remade this game for the DS and then ported it onto the WII U"
I played the DS version first and then went back to the 64 original years later, so all those things he said about the remake's controls feeling wrong are exactly what I said when playing the N64 version!
the feeling of getting all 150 is always such a great achievement, even to this day, its still one of my favorite ds games
Super Mario 64 DS to me is my favourite of the bunch because it innovated the landscape for the iPhone, because of the minigames, and ever since 2007, it along with New Super Mario Bros, were two wonderful casino toys for me, my brother and cousins when we were kids.
18:24 Your face is like "What the... What !?" 😂😂😂
Please keep this series going Dave!
Can you add this to Archives also He questions to jump into the star sphere like he’s gonna die or something lol
It's funny to see you having problems with the controls. It also saddens me to see this as a ds lover, this was my first experience with mario 64. And after playing 64 on the switch, I'd say that the ds was my favorite way to play it.
super mario 64DS's most beloved addition wasnt any of the main game content new or old. people love the mini games in this remake, they're the thing that made it memorable.
Super cool video dave! I love it!
There're pros and cons to both versions, though I think the DS version wins out in almost all categories. And I grew up on the N64 version! I'll agree that the controls get a little wonky on DS, but it's mostly just stopping or changing direction when at a slower speed. The amount of times the character moves in a circle instead of just snapping to the new direction costing me a life is too damn high.
Otherwise all the improvements are very welcome
it’s crazy how i just replayed this game the other day
This was the first stream I ever saw of yours even though I started watching you when you did the is it possible challenges in Mario Odyssey, I'm gonna try to see your next one aswell
The fact he doesn't know how to crouch Makes me scream
He obviously doesn't play games very much it he didn't even try to press the shoulder buttons
the Wario hat turned Mario in to Wario but it is still Mario
This game was next to Mario and Luigi Games my childhood, it's such awesome. I'll try to play it as fast as possible again soon.
Oh DGR uploaded a new video
*me turns down volume a notch
I would really enjoy seeing you play this some more, along with the original game.
I want to see more of DGR64 DS. that game was my discovery version of SM64.
150 stars instead of 120.
4 playable characters instead of just Mario.
Yoshi can use the other characters' cap to transform into them.
Each character have a unique power up (mario float + wing cap, Wario metal, Luigi invisible, Yoshi breathe fire.)
Funny story: back in the day, I got this game. I didn't realize it was a remake of a different game. So I was playing it and was just like "this is a fun game." I had no clue.
Years later, once I finally picked up on the fact that it was actually a remake, I was kind of intrigued. But after finding out all the differences, I realized that I kind of like this version of the game better, sadly. What is new content for the people who played the original just feels like missing content whenever I get a chance to play the original.
It's weird to think that the original SM64 feels like a worse version of this game to people like me who played this version first, while, to fans of the original, this version might seem like a worse (at least in some ways) version of the original game.
Anyway, that aside, I'm glad to see you enjoy a game so close to my heart!
LOL after the bobomb fight "yoshi's bald?"
This game was a major part of my childhood. Its still my favorite game of all time, nothing else really comes close for me, even the original
The ad when wario punched the boulder was like: Bathaniel, don't look!!!
I’m so happy you got to play this game
This is the content I subbed for *Sniff Sniff*
YES MY FAVORITE GAME AND THE FIRST ONE 100% BY ME!!! THANKS FIR PLAYING DGR
Cool! It's so neat to see people seeing this for the first time!
Weirdly for me, the most memorable part about this game is the minigames. Loved Luigi's Casino!
You were talking about how the controls felt dangerous and that is exactly how I feel about the OG 64. I can't get used to the controls with any controller no matter how long I play
19:25 "Is that Bowser Jr's laugh?"
You're dead to me.
I just started playing the DS version again years later. I grew up with the N64 version so it’s nice to play it again on the DS.
Also my childhood. Would love to see you play more!!
I hope you can do a part 2 of the game. Great video!
I think this game and the original are equal masterpieces. The DS trades the better controls with more content and the reverse applies to the original. I personally will always love the DS version more bc that's how I was introduced to the game as a child, but I also understand the massive impact and legacy the original has. Oh and if you are wondering about those keys, they unlock different minigames. You get the keys by catching the bunnies of the color of the character. Yoshi's is Yellow, Mario's is Red, Luigi's is Green, and Wario's is Orange. Each key from a colored bunny unlocks a minigame under the character's section. Luigi's is more casino based, like Poker and Russian Roulette, Wario's is more bob-ombs style, Mario is mainly just minigames involving Mario, and I forget what Yoshi's is. I know there is a pick the flower one where it's she loves me, she loves me not, etc.
DGR: Yoshi can't ground pound!
Everybody Else: Yoshi invented the ground pound, Dave.
Bowser did it in SMB3 before it was cool.
Yoshi did. In Super Super Mario World 2 Yoshi's Island
Please promise me you’ll do a full game play though!!! Please, this is the Mario 64 I started with!!
When I tried to play Mario 64 in the 35 collection I just could not control it at all, but when I went to Mario sunshine the changes to the basic controls and the fludd movement allowed me to actually move where I wanted to
“You can’t ground pound”
Me, internally screaming: TRIGGER OR BUMPER!!!!! JUST PRESS IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
