  • This is a play-through using Rashojin Mizuki in the Arcade version of Samurai Shodown 5 Special. Read on below for information...
    Mizuki is the final boss in the game and can be selected from the start, which means that she is a regular playable character.
    ===== About Mizuki =====
    As a "mature woman" shrine maiden archetype, she makes a great evil boss for the Samurai Shodown series. In SS5S, it is her 2nd appearance in the series since SS2, so it is fitting that she would be made the final boss for this game, considering that the other 3 bosses have already appeared more than once in the series.
    Design-wise, Mizuki returns in SS5S with her sprites completely redrawn to match the "newer" SS3-and-post style characters, and it is excellently done. My only criticism is that she has no legs/feet unlike her original appearance in SS2... but then I guess it kinda suits her as a "semi-human with a beast sidekick" type character. The "evil Poppy" colour swap sidekick is not by her side anymore, instead Maju (the beast) now only appears in one of her special moves and one of her winning poses.
    ===== About SS5 Special =====
    The game is an upgrade/update to the original SS5. The most significant difference of this update is the addition of the boss characters Amakusa, Zankuro and Mizuki. However in return, the "sprite edit" mid-boss characters Sankuro and Yumeji, as well as hidden character Poppy of SS5, were removed to make way respectively.
    Other changes include gameplay balance readdressing, a few new backgrounds, overkill moves and generic fatalities.
    ===== Additional Information =====
    ---- Nakoruru and Rimururu, who were both "immune" to fatality defeats in SS3 and SS4, are now able to have these fatality defeats happen to them at the end of a match if they lose. You even get violent death screams from them during the fatalities as well.
    ---- The fatality defeats and Near Death Secrets caused a lot of controversy back then. So much that it led to SNK Playmore censoring the AES cartridge version shortly after the real-life Sasebo slashing incident in 2004. This censorship caused some faults to happen in the game.
    ---- When the AES version of the game was approaching its release date, it was mysteriously delayed for a week. Then when it came out, players discovered that the generic fatality defeats were removed, and the Near Death Secret moves were toned down.
    ---- The discovery of the censorship caused criticism from the fans, which resulted in SNK recalling the cartridges and fixing the flaws caused by the original censorship. Character-specific Near Death Secret moves were restored, but only partially - the ones which had body decapitations were still excluded.
    ---- In the Japanese version of the game, there is an exclusive stream of dialogue for characters that have successfully performed the Near Death Secret move.
    ---- Samurai Shodown 5 Special is the last official game to be released onto the NeoGeo system.
    ---- A further upgraded version of the game called Samurai Shodown V Special: Final Edition was reportedly location tested, but never officially released.
