    Small correction: UFO 50 wasn't *just* made by Derek "Spelunky" Yu but by a bunch of other people as well. Including the Downwell dev.
    Also, one thing that completely blew my mind when I found out - UFO 50 is made in Game Maker. Considering how messy a single project made by a single dev gets, it's genuinely impressive such a large team managed to make such a large project! (Internally it's a single project, the only thing that's loaded dynamically is the soundtrack - suddenly the cases where graphics are reused makes a lot more sense because every game's just gonna be able to access the graphics for any other game)

    As someone who likes pinball, and wants more things like this, here is my review of Pinball Spire. It is good at pinball, in the physics and mechanics, and it is for people who are good at pinball, which is a mixed blessing. Progression always hinges on being able to make one specific shot. The appeal of normal pinball is that there are a lot of other things that can happen if you don't do this one thing, but here you're just stuck on attempting this one thing over and over until you get through it. These challenges often hinge on holding the button for a certain power at the exact moment of success, as a way of making you sort of call your shot (as if you could possibly do it by accident). This interferes with the one-button-per-hand mindset conducive to playing pinball. The game is a lot more linear than something calling itself a "pinballvania" would like to admit, and it is short. I see that Yahtzee finished most of the game in a "Tries", because all that's left after the point where it sends you to the cellar is a quick climb up through everything you've already unlocked and one final boss. It is worthwhile, but after finishing it there's basically no reason to play again.

      Thanks for your review. I’m also always looking for something like this and was curious about this.
      Yatz mentioned Yoku’s Island Express, and there’s also Rollers of the Realm (which is getting a sequel at some point) and The Creature in the Well (which isn’t pure pinball and maybe closer to pachinko, but still fun). Any other games you’d recommend?

      @@websterbillingham8873 The best pioneers of exploration pinball gameplay were browser games that are hard to find or run anymore. I've been searching for one I remember from Kongregate and finally found it in its final form for free on itch: "I Am Level", a game in ultra-retro Monty-on-the-Run style (or VVVVVV style for the kids listening), primitive and ponderous but a true metroidvania map and all the more intriguing.

  • @Heavenlyhounds96
    @Heavenlyhounds96 2 месяца назад +15

    As someone who enjoys pinball, you are correct.
    Sometimes the machine is just plainly designed to at certain points or angles shove that ball straight down the center, and you don't have a chance in hell at even tapping it. :P
    Also, the balls can vary from light and floaty, to dense, to bouncy and swift af. Not to mention the angle of the table can affect so much, and sometimes you honestly wonder if the designers actually thought over the layout of the rails or the space of the flippers.
    Funny enough earlier tables at one point gave you FIVE BALLS instead of 3. (for like 50 cents USD)
    That being said I do still have a stronger fondness for modern tables, but that's mostly cause of all the music-heavy ones like the Iron Maiden, ACDC, and Metallica tables. (I'm surprised Stern has yet to even make a table for The Who ffs; it's right flippin there! No pun intended)

    I do have to question which Second Wind staffer suggested UFO 50 for Yahtzee Tries (playing along, odds are it was Nick). I mean, it takes at least a good TWENTY HOURS or so to really experience everything (granted, your mileage may vary, but I'd say it's somewhere in the double-digits), to the point where, as I write this, no one has even beaten all 50 games yet, if the Steam achievements are any indication. Glad Yahtzee really liked it, but it's inclusion here feels like if someone suggested that Metaphor: ReFantazio should be here as well.
    Well, hopefully it gets a Fully Ramblomatic episode later if possible as well, especially since Yahtzee, being a story hound, didn't even get to experience the bits & pieces of UFO 50's story yet. And oh yes, there is a story! If not told through each game's history, genre shifts, and credits, then told through...well, I won't spoil anything, but this still being October, maybe you should check out Night Manor & its history...

    • @SlyDante
      @SlyDante 2 месяца назад +2

      @@wertjoe Wait, the Steam achievements say 0% of players earned the "Cherry Pie" achievement, though (unless they're rounding down instead of up)...Also, Yahtzee still seems to be enthusiastic about the game here. Again, I think it was just an issue of having to work with one hour, & it was just Yahtzee playfully switching to another game (though obviously, not every game will be for him, or anyone).

    I used to also think that Pinball is impossible to get good at, simply because "ball through middle" is always run-ending.
    Then I played a good one (winXP Space Cadet, iirc), and while I only started because I enjoyed the infinity of "one more level" things one could reach, I eventually got the muscle memory for "when to hit in order to make it go in a direction", but then you also learn which directions lead to middle-end and which don't.
    Really surprising how good can you become at that game.

    When i Yahtzee gonna try that Silent Hill 2 game? Given his love of Resident Evil 4, i think he'd probably like it. Hell, it'd probably feel familar... like playing a forgotten dream.
