    Diane, I don't often comment on RUclips, but I wanted to let you know I've been watching your videos off and on since last summer, and I decided to take the plunge and do the baby steps six days ago. I love how you are so calm and understanding. I tried implementing the whole Flylady system all at once last spring and completely failed; I thought I was too good for babysteps--haha! I really didn't understand until today that I need to take care of myself and regain my strength before I can tackle my house. Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos. I feel like you're a friend, even though you're so far away and we have never met!

    I had let my dishes go, delayed emptying the dishwasher, and it was a mess at bedtime last night. I was just going to forget it, like I did the night before. Then, I thought, oh I can probably do this in 15 minutes, then I will feel happier in the morning to see a clean counter and sink. So I did it! (While finishing up watching a cooking show.) This morning, I will put the hand washed dishes away and get on with my day. I have just felt so cheerfully encouraged by you! Not compelled, like YOU HAVE TO DO THIS! But. nudged into happiness.

    I think I’m going to like this baby step! Every flat surface in my home is a “Hot Spot” right now, so overwhelming. I didn’t quite know how to start working on them. Now I do! My sink is shining, I’m dressed to shoes and I’m going to start right now at my desk. Timer started! Go!

    The last minute or so really struck a chord with me. We don't want to start and we don't want to finish. That's why the timer is the key to just getting things done without the hyper focus- which is really a problem. Even though I've been with Flylady since 2002, I'm still learning. Thanks

    Thank you so much. The house makes me feel so overwhelmed that I can't even start. You are kind and straightforward. Encouraging me that perfection is not what we have to be. I am so grateful that for a week now my sink has been shined and it makes me smile each morning when I get up. I have hope that I can make a start on the rest. I have even managed to get dressed first thing. Thank you for breaking it down into small steps

I try and wash my dishes as soon as I've used them too. Now it's time to focus on all the hot spots! I love that there's no pressure to do it in a hurry. On day 7 today but I'm struggling with the hotspots a bit. So far I've cleaned the same hotspot 2 times today and it's down to the last few bits. I got super sidetracked for 20 minutes the second time because I got overconfident and thought I could do it without a timer. Will definitely be using the timer more. Thanks so much for the videos Diane! My first flybaby week is going great!

    Dearest Diane, I was actually terrified of the 2-min hot-spot! (I have a multitude of those), But 2 minutes flew by so fast! I was extremely pleased afterwards. I also did a 2-minute email clean up (yes, both done with a timer :) Thank you so much, I'm really enjoying your "cheerleading"

    I am so thankful for you! I started Fly Lady in 2006 or 7? All the emails overwhelmed me. I already had routines in place, so it resonated with me. However, I was starting to experience heavy brain fog and other symptoms, and I knew I needed something to get me through. The timer is a really good idea-I never used it because of being hyper-focused which led to quick burnout. I’m starting again now that I find myself facing an empty nest soon, and menopause. My diet has changed for the better, and no more brain fog or exhaustion! Yay me!😆 I love that I can see how you do things, and your perspective on life. You are such and encouragement. Thank you!🎉🎉🎉

I have always struggled with cleanliness an already I can feel a difference. I tried Spark Joy the Marie Kondo method and so many things about that didnt fit me.... Mainly the must do the whole house as fast as possible . I always ot burned out and didnt maintain it. Just realized as I ride my stationary bike I already set out my clothes and shoes and did nt even think about it!!! Love the timer it really helps me with pretty much everything. My budgies used to go nuts when I was speaking on the phone, or when applause came on the TV. This looks like a great plan to use. I'm on my own and retired so I was totally too good to myself in terms of taking it easy. It's not really my nature but I told myself I deserved to do nothing after years of nursing in a very stressful area. 👍. I'm looking forward to getting control back.

    LOL, my whole house is a Hot Spot! I wish I had a Dalek to exterminate it all! I have a problem with letting go of "stuff" because of what it cost, even if it's a little. For example, I found a pile of paper napkins I've had for years for holidays stuck back in a closet. I took them out and now they are sitting on my kitchen island. I know I should throw them away, but I keep thinking "you'll want those one day!" or "You are wasting money.!" I will have to work on that for sure.

    • @jmiller7918
      @jmiller7918 7 лет назад +20

      Sharon Doty - I had the same problem! I kept moving them around, thinking I'd remember them next holiday, but after years of that not happening, I said, "Heck with it, 'Everyday's a holiday!'" and we used them until they were gone and off my mind. What a relief!

    I cleared out two hot spots this weekend. One by my kitchen phone. This is where all paperwork, bills and my purse would sit. I cleared out the cabinet right above that and now the counter is clear. I put something in that space to remind me it is not where I should be putting things.
    Another spot was on one of the living room speakers. This would collect kids shoes, socks or anything that needed to go upstairs. I cleared it off and put a plant there.
    Many more hot spots to tackle (top of bedroom dressers!).

My husband cooked a boston butt in the oven, it overflowed the pan, he did his bets and got most of it, but its the dregs that cause the off flavors. • @DianeinDenmark
      @DianeinDenmark  5 лет назад +6

      Hi Glenda! You'll find that once you start cleaning the Flylady way, you are cleaning consistently (for short bursts of time) and so you no longer need toxic products. I only use environmentally friendly sprays, and find that I don't need much product at all. Much better for the environment and for you! 😃 I only wear an apron when I am cooking but you may want to wear one while cleaning, if that is a worry for you. You'll see that in all my "clean with me" videos, I am wearing my outfit for the day. Hope that helps! ruclips.net/p/PLxIYCyTLBED8Wax351mgTMw2dcA8XvrqQ

    I get a little confused...I can do a 15 minute declutter easily in a hot spot. Is there a good way to determine when I should turn it into a 15 minute declutter and when I should just give it 2 minutes?

    • @DianeinDenmark
      @DianeinDenmark  7 лет назад +3

      Whatever you have the time/energy to do is great, Melissa! Your hotspots are the places you dump things when you walk in the door (kitchen counter, hall table, coffee table). Keep attacking one every day and see if you can reduce the number of hotspots.

    Hi, I know this video was from a couple of years ago but I am just getting started and on day 8. My question is do you keep doing the hot spots of your home (2min every hr) every day or just this day?

    • @DianeinDenmark
      @DianeinDenmark  5 лет назад +7

      Hi Noelia! There is no reason to do a hotspot every hour. Just when you can. But the aim is to do it at least once every day, so that it becomes a routine to see where you are piling things/to take action.

  • @mmedujard
    @mmedujard 7 лет назад +8

    Thank you so much for you inspiring videos! I really love watching them and they already helped me so much :)
    I have a little question concerning the hot spots: do the 2 minutes include getting rid of all the stuff on the hot spot? I often have stuff on this places that need further action, for example I had two photoframes that had to be put on the wall... I did it in the meantime ;) but it included going on the attic and getting nails, getting my hammer out of the cupboard...
    Do you recommend to do such things directly after clearing the hotspot or would you collect them at a special place and do them another time?
    (Sorry, for my bad English ;) I hope you understand what I mean)

    • @DianeinDenmark
      @DianeinDenmark  7 лет назад +6

      +Cécile du Jard Hi Cécile! Yes, just go through the items on your hotspot and put them where they belong (invitations/bills to be paid go on your desk or in an 'action' folder, hairbrush goes in the bathroom, keys go with your handbag) and your picture frames could go in a little box for Anti-Procrastination day tasks. You can take action on those things later - right now we are sorting through our Hot Spot piles. Hope that helps?

I know, it is late actually it is the 7th now. but just, when I thought, yes you came late, but didn't even manage the 2 min hospot, I did it. early this evening, I did some cleaning in the bath room. but the actual tast of today - hotspots - I didn't. just as I was about the prepare my cloth for tomorrow, I realized, I could go through the cloth on my chair, where I put one time worn cloth and let them pile up (just realized, that I had 4 bras in there. more than tops. just one trousers. weired) . so, for now I should really go to bed. thanks for your encouragement

    Hi! New FlyBaby here! I found the FlyLady website on 12/12/2019 and got the Sink Reflections book out of my library on 12/14. Shined my sink for the first time on 12/15, and been doing my best ever since. I’ve been dressing to shoes and doing the AM/PM routines regularly every day since that mid-December. I’ve also slowly started to Declutter, 15 minutes at a time. I decided to start watching this 31 baby steps playlist, and at the end of this video you ask how it’s going, so I’m letting you know! Is it best to sort for two minutes then when timer goes off put away sorted items or do you suggest putting things away as you go? In other words, if you were not taping would you have run the Christmas decoration downstairs come back up then run your necklace upstairs, etc... or have done it just as you did on tape and put all away after sorted? Maybe a silly question...just get it done!🗣

      Hi Inge! Just deal with as many things as you can from your hotspot in the two minutes. Put away stray items in the room where they belong, recycle the junk mail, toss trash. You'll be amazed at what you can do in 2 minutes and it also helps us to *see* the places where we tend to dump things, and stops us from dumping things there the next time. Hope that helps!

      Dear Diane, yes, this does help :-) I understand what you mean now. Thank you for your answer. I like your videos so much: I feel your honesty and warmth behind the way you 'coach' and I am very fond of your lovely accent. Thank you for being YOU! Warmly appreciated! Take good care, love from dreary Flanders (Belgium)

    H Diane, thank you so much for these babysteps. I can do anything in two minutes just have to remember to set my timer. Have been doing all the others steps and seeing such a change in my house. Cleared my kitchen worktops yesterday and only left the things I love and want to clean. My husband came home commenting, so much space to put things. He usually just dumps all his work things papers glasses and contacts with cleaner and cloths right on my counters. Still not sure yet what I can do about that as that becomes my hot spot when he comes home. Any advice! Thanks again for taking us through these steps. Been more helpful than just going on the Web and seeing what to do for that day. Love from a wet and rainy UK. xx

      @DianeinDenmark  7 лет назад +4

      +Maritsa Denman My husband does that too so I put a big wooden bowl on top of the chest of drawers and he dumps stuff into that (keys, coins, gum, pens, etc). Keeps it contained and he knows where to find it. Good luck, Maritsa!

    Thanks for the great videos! What do you do if you find something in your hot spot (something you want to keep) but you don't have a place for it? In the video, you find 4-5 things but you already know where it belongs. I know this is a slow process but it is slightly frustrating when you are cleaning a hot spot or trying to declutter and you just don't have a place yet. Just curious as to what other do - thanks again!!'

    • @DianeinDenmark
      @DianeinDenmark  7 лет назад +6

      +Seajay035 I would pop them in a basket and work on the contents once a day, or on Anti-procrastination day. Perhaps the items don't have a 'home' because you don't really need them/love them/use them? Set your timer for 5 minutes and decide what to do with them, one at a time...

    Thank you Diane. I am 71 years old and I have been following your Babysteps since 1 of May,
    but I do have a Problem with the Hot Spots, I just kind a move the stuff from one Hot Spot to another. I do not know where to put them. I cannot find a place in my mess. Do you have a solution?

    • @DianeinDenmark
      @DianeinDenmark  5 лет назад +4

      Hi there! Set your timer for 5 minutes and deal with each item (don't worry if you dont get all the way through the pile). Ask yourself do I need this item, do I want to keep it, can it be given away or thrown away. Give the things you want to keep a proper home, and put them away.

    I listened and I learned but there is one big thing for me, if it is a work day at home, I wear smart casual, a cleaning day, cleaning clothes which are basically old clothes that I don't mind getting dirty or bleach on, if it's a day out I wear nice clothes and if it's a day at home sewing or studying, it's leisure wear. I don't by wear shoes in the house as a rule, just slippers, sandals or slipper boots. I take your point about getting up and dressing for the day but that can consist of many changes of clothes for me. My washer is always on. Xxx
