18:52 Penelope Douglas also uses they/them pronouns
    36:13 "subject line"
50:20 Because they can exert their power over children however they want with no repurcuaions

re: the member shout outs, since your intros are always so long (love them) you could just have them scroll by while you're yappin (peace and love), and then you could verbally say the names of higher-tiered folks

32:48 you are correct, convention people are incredibly odd and emotionally immature and it’s actually the biggest issue with events like these 😭 peace and love but I’ve never been in a place with a higher concentration of wrong people than the conventions I’ve been at

12:50 Washington DC is on the east coast, and yes, the Washington Monument is phallic. 😝 Washington the state is in the upper left.

IF your friend bartends at events and doesn't get paid, I think the organizers might go "well you'll get tipped so that counts as payment right"

hi youre hilarious! something else about rebecca yarros saying octavia butler is that octavia butler's politic is vastly opposed to rebecca yarros', so it was also confusing on that front, like... why??

I've never attended a book convention. I've heard drama around events such as Readers Take Denver, apparently it was awful. I've only heard good things about apollycon so that fact that there's something negative about it caught my attention.
Been watching your videos for a while & this podcast is cool.
I'm a usually positive person but do love seeing a variety of perspectives and opinions on various topics. Especially book related.
Edit: I actually did hear this one briefly. I didn't realize that was at Apollycon. I thought it was another one of the billion events. Lol.

25:02 me shout out!! The money does NOT pay vendors, it pays con staff and for the venue and for the fixtures such as tables etc and anything else, vendors only make their own profit from their things and have to pay for their table spot! that convention sis exorbitantly priced 💀

1:05:07 she might know her personally, and I wouldn’t be shocked if in her experience she really believes this. THATS why situations like these are so hard because it’s all hearsay, they probably know each other through work

12:48 Washington DC is our US capitol is on the BORDER of Virginia and Maryland
George Washington was the first US president and lead us through the America revolution to free the US from imperial great Britain. As for the slave owning stuff, it’s something that’s hard to apply modern morality to given that different things were normalized at the time (for instance women couldn’t vote, in most places couldn’t divorce their husbands, plenty of other stuff) and it’s also a complex issue because it’s related to what things were normalized at the time or considered status symbols, so there’s a range of opinions and treatments throughout the founding fathers and other associated historical figures for this topic as well as many others. Regardless, things that were considered social norms in the past are considered humanitarian crises now, and it’s likely in the future something we consider normal will be considered inhumane, so I try to think about it that way. The lore and history of it also is such a rabbit hole and it’s heartbreaking at times so I haven’t gone as far into it as I could have. We have the American civil war for dunking on historical figures for this (war fought to end slavery)
edit: GIRL JUST CUZ AMERICA IS CRINGE NOW DOESNT MEAN IT ALWAYS WAS WE BECAME A WORLD SUPERPOWER AT MACH SPEED ON THE HISTORICAL WORLD STAGE 😭😭😭 my country embarrasses me right now 💀

wdym it's hard to apply modern morality to? as if slavery abolitionists didn't exist then lmao?? they knew it was wrong they just didn't gaf bc they felt justified.
as a black american it annoys me when europeans try talking smack abt america like they didn't invent racism and rape + pillage the rest of the world (many are bitter bc America is "top dog" now and they're left with fragments of their colonial empires) but no it's not "hard to apply modern morality" to the past. that morality isn't a modern invention it just wasn't the majority.

About this "european accent" - it was a joke! It was in one of your older rants, when you were joking about Europe as one big country with the same language, remember? I know you're German, you were mentioning it in every movie for five times at least 😜. TrisMoszfajka isn't my real name, it's my nickname from good old times (Tris like Triss Merigold from The Witcher and "Moszfajka" means "do you have a cigarette?" xD - because I've always had one in my collage days). My name is Ewa Getler and I'm sure that with this name I've coud have been German :D. I'm so so so sorry for my terrible English, I hope you understood some of my babbling. Your English is stunning and I really very envy you. Du bist brillant und ich liebe dich ❤

1:01:42 I’d lose my mind if this was because of the wealth disparity and how expensive it is to rent booths/ table spaces but it’s horrible and I really hope there aren’t hidden racists at the tops of these events cuz I’ve never seen shit like this ever 💀💀💀 Jesus Christ

From what I know the convention volunteer getting perks and not paid is normal. Anime detour volunteers got a special snack room and it was awesome.

Closing statement on someone who’s worked a con in the same area as apollycon:
there was likely a personal drama between these staff members and we will likely never know the real full truth of the matter. (To play devil’s advocate) I see it ALL the time, and I’ve WATCHED people act out of pocket and then play the discrimination card to get their way. It’s disturbing, and it causes victims of discrimination to lose credibility for their lived experiences. It’s a common tale at these places. Truly sad because obviously we all want to do the right thing and fight against any and all discrimination so that everyone has equal access, and I truly hope that if it was the case that she was being discriminated against that justice has been served in this instance. My personal experience is telling me that we’re missing something, but regardless I just hope everyone can move on and not be discouraged to participate in the media they enjoy and go on to do better things.
Also to be clear, con workers WILL LIE and con goers WILL ALSO LIE to get their way no matter who it hurts, I basically have PTSD (not really but it gives me anxiety) from it and NO LONGER work at conventions because of this sort of treatment. It’s sickening and disheartening, and my final message is to never give up pursuing what you enjoy. Not everyone is quite so morally corrupt.

50:00 I wonder if it’s related that she mentions her friends but never mentions them helping, it seems weird that no one would step in. It makes me think that something else might be the case as in maybe we are missing part of the story, given that I’ve worked at conventions before AND have worked a convention in Washington DC, I can’t imagine that racism was the ONLY issue, not to downplay her experience. It could absolutely be true, I’m just wondering if we are missing some information. (On top of the fact that events like these are hyper progressive, it’s very unlikely you’ll find someone being racist like it’s the 1950’s in the south) The shirt and bag thing is weird though because even if she was the villain I can’t imagine why they wouldn’t just let her have her things and go? I don’t know, I’m just speculating because I’ve BEEN to this place and WORKED there and this sounds like something a Karen would say and blow out of proportion and I’ve had experience with that. Glad that anti girly pop was fired too like let a girl pee wtf is this bullying

Adding on to what other comments have said Washington D.C is also the capital of the United States! So it’s where the Washington monument and White House is located and most of the big government buildings are located there
