We had a version in the civil war, now we aren't as racist in the south, we still have a grudge against the Brits though even though the civil war was more recently, we for give and forget fairly easily... just not the Brits... or Japanese.
In 1857, during the Siege of Delhi the British Army heard various Sepoy mutineer units (ie Bengal Native Infantry) playing this song as they arrived to reinforce the rebel city, Some also played "God Save the Queen". Madness!!
Interesting to contrast the lyrics with the lyrics to "Over the Hills and Far Away," which dates from the turn of the 18th Century. There, the lyrics paint a rather unsentimental picture of life in the home country - good reason to take the "forty shillings on the drum" and head across the Channel.
Can someone riddle me this: Why am I obsessed with listening to old patriotic songs like this? These are the types of songs I listen: old British Army songs, old English civil war songs (Royalist songs), scottish songs (like "a Gordon For Me"), and for some odd reason I like listening to Prussian marches, every now and then I listen to patriotic american music like "the Liberty Song" (which is the same tune as the Royal Navy, Heart of Oak), and I also sometimes I listen to French music like that Onion Marching song, and there are other genres of songs that I listen to that I can't think off the top of my head. My favourite genre is probably the English civil war songs, yet I can't explain why.
@@patrioticarchive Thanks for the response mate, and you're right I am interested in history (mainly military/colonial/empirical/civilwar history). Pretty much any history to do with war. Your whole channel is the embodiment of my taste in historical music. Congratulations on reaching over 12k subscribers! I remember when you had 4k subs, back then I ran a channel called "The Peak Of Power", however due to copyright issues and de-monetisation of my channel, I stopped running it. You might remember me by that name. However, I've found a new (additional) interest. My new channel is about buying and investing into Gold (something the Central Banks can't print). I'm monetised now on my new channel. You have 2 patriotic music channel's don't you? I also listen to songs on the 2nd one, "Dark is the Night" is one I like on that channel along with others. Anyways, how are you doing nowadays? How have your interests evolved (with music)? also are you monetised? and have you had any issues with copyright?
@@thegoldstandard721 Oh yeah I remember your channel! Sad to hear you're not using it anymore. I haven't monitised my channel and I don't think I would be able to even if I wanted too. I've never looked into the gold stuff so I'll have to give your channel a watch. I generally only use my main channel and only use the second one when I want to upload foreign music. By and large I like the same type of music, marches, folk songs, patriotic music, bit of classical music too. But yeah I'm fine mate, same old really lol. How are you keeping? Oh yeah and I haven't got any strikes on my channel so far 🤞
Wow we have the exact same interests, It's like we're twins. I also listen to classical music. We must be old souls. I'm doing good, I'm doing better than I ever have before. I'm Glad you haven't got any strikes, keep up your work mate, it's much appreciated. I would be incomplete without some of the songs on your channel that I listen to on a regular basis. Oh and thanks for checking out my channel about gold. I invest into gold because it's a hedge against inflation. Gold is also an old fashioned interest. You might find the "Britannia" 1 ounce gold coins of particular interest. I own 3 of them 🪙. Anyway, enjoy the rest of your week, and never stop uploading forgotten gems, I'll listen to most of them.
I bloody love listening to this while wandering Edinburgh ngl
Loving all the British army songs
Glad you're enjoying them mate!

I am exactly the same.
Something that I Can recommend are German marching songs
There's wealth for honest labour.
Thanks! I keep seeing the lyrics in the books I'm reading and wanted to hear the tune
Me and the boys, Going to the pub in Leicester, after fought the wars:
I wouldn't mind this as our anthem
God this song has NO REASON to slap this hard! I love it~!
Cheer for the prince of Wales!
I ain't British but... This makes me feel like a Brtish Patriot
A cool song, but it's probably from 1850, not 1950.
Lol thanks, must of been a typo.
@@patrioticarchive Thank you for your uploads and especially for lyrics, sometimes it's hard to find them! Great work!
@@alexp5552 Thank you for the kind words! I'm glad you enjoy them mate.
It’s from the Crimean war
Now I'm ready to fight I might be American but my ancestry is from the UK English blood runs through my veins.
so the Confederates have a song with the same name, did they barrow the name from the English or is it just a coincidence
English migrants brought the song
I'm not even ethnically Anglo or Brittonic but I am thoroughly british and these songs give me pride that no longer exists in our nation.
This song was used by pro-confederation movements in British Columbia
Love my England but this song is terrible.
?
I understand, your mother was a dog.
Powerful song 💪🏼🏴
