    Juuni Taisen is a recreation of the old Zodiac Race Myth.
    Anyone who knows about the Zodiac Race would already know what would happen in the anime.
    The anime is more about knowing about the characters and letting yourself into the world.

    Just binged the show and really enjoyed it I can't believe how lowly rated it is. It's all about the characters yet everybody shat on it for having a predictable plot it's like holy crap how dumb can you be like even in America we learn about the Chinese Zodiac in Elementary School no duh they gave away the kill order that's not what the show was about. It's a shame, the show was far from perfect but it was still really enjoyable.

    Juuni taisen is good. at this point, episode 10, you get to understand that it's basically a character study. much like the monogatariv series (not as much, but you can see it), the dialogues are very meticulously crafted and as you pay more and more attention, you get to see how each line of dialogue really syncs up with the kind of character is speaking. For example, somone like boar on ep 1 is so overconfident, her thoughts are very detailed expectations on how her fight with rabbit would end, in almost a genius-like way, even though she got humiliated and died in a very pathetic way.
    Spoilers I guess
    on the other hand, on episode 10, we get to see that ox, the genius of slaughter,has a very rudimetal way of thinking, very childish like and it really sounds like a stupid kid talking, very one dimensional. Especially when talking about battle.
    What this is, imo is a character study in which all the characters present in the game are victim of situational irony aimed to send a really nihilistic message, especially considering the fact that the last man standing will be rat, the most millenial-like character and most nihilistic as far as we've seen.
    everyone dies in a way that either goes against all they stand for (boar-pride-died shamefully, for example) or that goes against all they have been doing until then (sheep-creating a plan to make a mess by killing a bunch of weak ones, trying to at least have his last moments mean something- got killed by tiger, one of the warriors he considered weakest, before he could accomplish anything).
    by already knowing how everyone is gonna die, it allows us to focus more on what the character is and how he dies, so that we pay more attention not to the fact that he is dead, but to the meaning behind all that happens.
    It reminds me in a way of shonen manga/anime. We all know that Luffy will find the One Piece or that Naruto will be hokage, they're the main characters, it's expected that they succeed. This way we can focus on the journey and on the how.

      Jonathan Giovannacci It's not a good character study tho
      Like showing a backstory to get the audience to at the last minute sympathize with a character is just lazy writing and is something I've criticized the Walking Dead for doing
      The story would've objectively been better if they had a set of characters to focus and develop throughout the course of the stories and seeing how characters play off of other characters and seeing relationships change and maybe some character growth
      But as it stands now it's fucking lazy writing that fails to make the audience care characters who only show their personality through their half assed self contained backstory

    • @JonathanGiovannacci
      @JonathanGiovannacci 7 лет назад +18

      MrKiron12 while what you say is true, it would have totally changed the structure of the story in which each episode is focusing on 1 single character. The story itself is victim of its own premise: the time limit implies that unless they want to pull off a planet namek, they had a limited amount of time to develop each of the 12 characters, therefore 1 per episode. This time limit also implies that you don't have enough time to see much character growth or character interactions happening during the current storyline, which means that flashbacks are the only way to show growth from what they were before, to what are now as grown people.
      It almost seems like you are describing fate/zero when you mention what could make it better, in fact Fate/zero is a better series and one of the most popular anime out there.
      I'm mot trying to say that juuni taisen is a masterpiece, but it's a good series if you try to look at it from a character growth perspective. Everyone is really interesting and with each backstory, they try to convey a message related to how each character grows up. This series is imo much better than most crap that comes out seasonally.

      @dakota4384 7 лет назад +1

    Anyone calling Juni Taisen a lazy and predictable show missed the point entirely. It's not about some clever planning of who's going to make it in the end. It's a story about people pursuing goals and wishes, struggling with hopelessness in a world where bad things are encouraged to happen because they're profitable. The zodiac, the tournament, that's all beside the point, that's just fluff to keep things interesting. And as for Nezumi, he was the perfect relation character bringing us to the real point of it all. He was the one asking about why we bother having aspirations and goals, as they only lead to disappointment and ending unfulfilled. He was the one who was just surviving (like he pointed out with Horse). All the things he might wish for in the end result in consequences he can't see the answer for and ultimately fail to satisfy the heart or himself. And that's why he chooses to forget the wish entirely. That's when he makes the first heartfelt decision in his life, and why he's so content in the end. Struggling with what to wish for was his very first encounter with adversity, and now he can go on as one of us. So don't dismiss Juni Taisen as lazy, it's an interesting commentary on aspiration versus survival.

    • @ShawnBlack-r9x
      @ShawnBlack-r9x 4 месяца назад +1

      I know this is 2 years old.. but it's just blatantly, objectively inaccurate... Going off memory, it's been awhile, but didn't Monkey want peace? She didn't get that. Dog/Wolf or w/e wanted his daughter taken care of. He didn't get that. Dragon and snake wanted money, they didn't get that. Goat or sheep or whatever wanted youth and he didn't get that, either.
      This is all just off the top of my head and I didn't give this more than a minute's worth of thought. To compare being devoured by birds to a harem is also kind of just ridiculous.. If it was somehow stated that it was only MALE birds that were being controlled, I could at least see the loose parallel, but it's not even that.. You're looking to make connections and patterns where there aren't any. The writers did not intend that, whatsoever.
      Even if I were to overlook Boar and give you that one, as ridiculous as that is, look at how many others don't align with your statement about satiating their desires.
      Again, it's been so long since I watched this, although I do consider it to be in maybe my top dozen or so anime I've ever watched.. Does Tiger even get the words out to Ox? I vaguely remember her death leaving a sour taste in my mouth and thought it was one of those "things left unsaid" type of scenes, which I'm personally not a fan of. I could be absolutely wrong, though. Or even if she didn't, or he didn't recognize her from what I recall, idk, he may've acknowledged her in some other kind of way. As I said, it's been a really long time. But that being said, i did dig the show.
      I personally didn't have the Chinese zodiac memorized nor did I watch the outros, so I had no idea the order was pre-ordained, and I personally think it made my viewing experience slightly better for it. I'd heard of the story about the race before but only vaguely remembered it, I was pretty sure Rat won but not absolutely certain, and in the back of my mind I always thought it was possible they may pull the rug and do something entirely different last second as an unexpected twist anyway. But that's just my unique, personal experience and subjective opinion. I'm glad I didn't have the order spoiled for me. Had I, I would've still enjoyed it, but just like 10-15% less maybe. It was exciting to invest in certain characters and see which picks of mine panned out, which ones didn't, or how long they lasted while fleshing out their backstory etc.
      I know I keep saying this, but it's been prob around 2.5-3yrs since I watched this, but I've prob thought about it once every other month at the least, ever since then. As I said, it's prob in my top dozen shows I've ever watched. Certain scenes stick out in my memory that I find myself just randomly daydreaming or thinking about every once in awhile, so it was cool/neat I got this video recommended to me.
      To anyone still reading, I hope you're having a rad day, cool random internet stranger dudes. I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.

      hawkeyemihawk getting money lord afro hokage You're still viewing this series as a battle royale. Even if you weren't, you would also be wrong to view this series through standard storytelling conventions. The author isn't attempting to hold his audience's suspense. Hell, he's not even trying to get the audience to empathize with or care about the characters by showing their respective back-stories. He's showing us there back-stories to give us insight into how these characters view themselves and the world around them, how that influences the way they each fight, and, in fact, why they fight in the first place. He's setting all this up so that we can understand, and have a greater appreciation for, the twist or metaphorical punchline at the end.
      I thought the fact that Juni Taisen was created by the same mangaka behind works like the Monogatari series should have made that somewhat apparent.

      hawkeyemihawk getting money lord afro hokage I already stated that the characters themselves are not the main focus of the show. Your inability to wrap your head around that isn't the series' fault, nor the fault of the mangaka. There are dozens of "unconventional" works with instances where characters aren't the primary or even secondary focus, yet the story is still highly regarded.
      Just because *you* dislike a series doesn't mean that it is objectively bad.

    I do agree with you. Juuni Taisen is based off the Chinese Zodiac Race and as a Chinese and Battle Royale fan myself, I was pretty hyped for this. But it was a letdown. Let me explain.
    1. Characters died without doing shit.
    2. Back stories are long and pointless. What's the point of showing us how strong the character is if he is going to die in one shot?
    3. Characters are generic. They lack motive.
    If you guys want a Chinese Zodiac anime better than Juuni Taisen, watch Etotama. Personally, I like that more.

    I dont mind its predicable and i dont mind the characters die in the order they do...i just hate how most of them die without doing ANYTHING! i mean cmon i dont mind rabbit killing dragon and snake but at least give them SOME chance to shine outside of backstory. if you are ONLY going to have 12 characters then why not give em some chance to shine in the fights they are in? at least with boar they did a clever thing where they showed how she thought the fight would go and as such we got to see some of her current capability's in a fight even if it was all just in her mind...that said i still like the show alot, just wish characters got to do more before dying off.

      True but some characters dont even get that much, take the dragon and snake...one of them died before we eve knew wtf was going on and all we saw of another was the backstory and him floating above the city.

    • @trebot9292266
      @trebot9292266 6 лет назад

      you only have 12 characters, some are not going to get to shine, it is just something that goes hand in hand with Last man standing types of fights. The only way to show what everybody can do would be to break the flow of the show and in general would have probably made the show too boring.

    Thank you very, very much. I binged the show in a day, loved the way they handled the characters, and felt really surprised when I went to see how other people felt about the show. It seems some people just can't enjoy art unless it's obscured with a veil of mystery.

    Most media is predictable, unless a show tries to be unpredictable I dont find it a fault that it is. Like you said it can be a strength or neutral aspect of the show and I agree with that. Atleast this show doesn't try to set itself apart and is just a mindless indulgent sort of show.

  • @ParanoiaHoliX
    @ParanoiaHoliX 7 лет назад +50

    Love this HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
    It was never about who is going to win--
    Episode 1 was already an indication. In fact, I have to commend the story writers because think about it. Twelve characters. Twelve episodes.
    They have to somehow expertly fit in backstory, a fight scene and then the very death of the character they highlighted. Certain episodes even had me worried because there were absolutely no deaths in it and I started thinking "Oh man, are they going to be able to squeeze everything in the schedule?" BUT THEY DID. AMAZING. This is some real Chekhov's Gun skill because given the time span, they can't afford to put anything unnecessary in it.
    Just recently episode 9 came out giving us our usual dose of backstory, although the scenes were slightly switched up from the usual order of how they tackle a character's story. Frankly, we all know who will be standing at the end (unless of course this is all some big PLOY TO LULL US INTO COMPLACENCY AND THEN WOW PLOT TWIST) but perhaps what is keeping us watching is the one question that the whole writing team seems to be wrapping in a blanket and hiding in a cooler of the basement--
    What's the deal with the war in general? Who made it? How far does the reach of the wish extend? In Episode 1 when Monkey attempted a peaceful resolution, what would her game plan have been? I also vaguely recall someone asking (perhaps sarcastically), if she would simply use the wish to bring them all back to life-- Well we've seen Rabbit and his merry band of (undead) friends, so we know that Juuni Taisen doesn't just stretch science, it down right snaps its spine in half.
    Let's see, let's see. So far it has made a lot of social commentary on the business of war, along with some philosophical probing regarding the festering nature of humanity (and its cheapness), so let's sit tight and wait for what the concluding 'statement' of this story is.

    • @Michahel
      @Michahel 7 лет назад +10

      Sara N. Yess, it seems not many others recognize this as the philosophical and psychological treatise [on war, the different takes on it, and which perspective comes out on top] that it is! I appreciate your comment.

      Sara N. True. Its kinda sad people don't actually think of these things, the possible deeper meaning behind everything. Seeing the backstories of each warrior, the brutal training they each face. Makes you wonder how much winning the Zodiac would mean not only to the clans they belong to. But the world.
      And also we don't know much about either the Rabbit or Rat. Where have they come from ? Or who drove them to join the war in the first place? So many questions, yet little answers....

    The only problem with the series for me was rabbits powers were all over the place and contradicted itself over and over
    From my understanding, he could control the corpses of people he killed (not by other corpses already under his control ie, monkey holding down ox so rabbit could reform) but he was able to control chicken even though ox killed her
    He also shouldn’t have been able to control his own corpse because even though he bit his tongue he was still killed by ox and tiger

    I hate making the "it was too subtle" argument, but until seeing this video, I didn't know how hard the show was pushing the killing order. I think that could be playing out a bit better if there were more signs that are in the show than outside of the show. I don't and would think that most don't know the zodiak's order, and I didn't pay much attention to the ending. With the knowledge of how the killing order will go, Rat's actions and overall attitude make more sense, but maybe they could of thrown in a few lines that show he knows if he does. Last thing about the backstory sections, they almost kill the show for me. We spend more than half the show in the past when all I want to see is the interactions between the fighters. I don't hate giving characters a good backstory, but integrate them better into the current events, not stopping the story and smashing to a different plot every episode.

    • @MrMedu7

      I think they did a sometimes good, sometimes bad job at fitting the backstorys into the story. For example Monkeys Backflash makes total sense because she tells Rat about her past in this scene and so a backflash is appropiate. Otherwise Snakes backstory in the last episode seemed crammed in and boring, because it came out of nowhere and we have not really met both Snake or Dragon in the actual story that much

    If it's embracing inevitability it should do a better job of doing so. The way that show is structured makes you want to follow a specific character because you agree with their view points, sympathize for them or you like their personality; giving a backstory and providing insight into the each of the characters then immediately killing them off isn't the way to do present viewers with a feeling of inevitability it only makes providing an interesting backstory pointless. I'm fine with killing off people's favourite characters as it can create a sense of inevitability and despair but there is literally nothing else in Juuni Taisen when they do that. There is no strategy in the show or when there is a strategy they immediately waffle on it. Since Rat is probably gonna win they should try to involve him differently to make it seem like his winning isn't just an asspull, so that he doesn't win just because he's the final character in Zodiac but they aren't. What is there to enjoy about this show? There is next to no plot aside from the backstories which are made irrelevant by the episode's end and there is no tension in a fight when you no who is going to lose. There is also nobody to root for in this show since any character you find appealing will die and at the same time there is nobody to root against since there is no villain. I guess you're right I don't get this show, I'm fine with a show tries something new as long as it well executed or the concept was worth experimenting with that's not the case with Juuni Taisen.

Of course rat is the first to be alives because he never died, the ox gets revived, and so on. Dragon loses the revival race because he was the first to die.

    Do tell how spoiling itself and making the whole thing predictable isn't lazy. Maybe thats what they're idea is, but its definitely not a good one. Doing something lazy and admitting to do it, doesn't make it any less lazy.
    And if it's not supposed to be unpredictable, why would I watch it? Does it have something else to say? some other reason to exist? Oh right... you don't know. But for some nebulous reason you feel compelled to defend it because apparently being lazy is different.
    It sure is different, but different =/= good.

    It makes sense that the characters are killed off in this chronology, since this anime is essentially an in depth adaptation of the original story explaining why the Zodiac have a particular order. Only they aren't having a race, but a battle royal.

  • @PointThree
    @PointThree 7 лет назад +117

    Ok sure, the show was made with reverse zodiac in mind, it still sucks dick at doing exactly that. Giving every character exactly 10 minutes of generic backstory filler doesn't make them interesting nor likeable, it just draws out the show until their inevitable death scenes. So far the show just doesn't convey anything. You just see generic characters die in the matters of seconds, there's nothing beyond that, and any semi-interesting plotline (what is monkey's plan?) just gets thrown out and everyone forgets about it. You say that the ending might have a twist, but seriously, it's already been 9 episodes. If 9/12 episodes (assuming the next two are good before the supposed twist in the finale) are pretty bad, then honestly the show as a whole suffers greatly.

      I don't wanna sound like a hipster dick here, but you should try to look at the series outside of a conventional storytelling perspective. It's not about the plot, there wasn't any to begin with. It's not about who dies, we already know that. I think this series is more about the characters. If you watch those ''generic backstories'' properly, you'll see that they really flesh out the characters quite well. If you combine that with what they do in the current timeline, you can always map out characters well enough to understand their reason for becoming who they are, their objective, their strengths, weaknesses etc...
      Now the next think I like to ask myself after seeing their story is: How can all they built up until now in their life crumble to pieces? Will they die as shamefully as they can, or will they be able to feel accomplished after all? will they get a last word or will it be just slaughter?
      There is a very subdle nihilistic vibe to this series that will definitely become stronger and stronger as we approach the end and as we approach rat's moment, rat being the most nihilistic character in the series as far as we know (rabbit doesn't count, he's a psycho)

    4)Monkey (i really respect her)(somehow i feel like she should be 1 but... she doesnt XD )
    5)Ox si a really cool guy, like Rat. I will pair them here, since the rat always tricks the Ox into carry him mounted on its back

      I say it worked. Just because something is different from the norm doesn't mean it's inherently bad. Nisio Isin's works hinge on being deliberately left field and unusual to portray his ideas and ideologies on certain cliches and genres most effectively. It's not a traditional show with all the good merits of a regular battle royale show, but then again it shouldn't be judged upon those merits at all because it's not even trying to hit those marks. That's like judging Eva as a traditional mech show, or Madoka Magica as a regular slice of life magical girl show. Generic is safe, but not always good, and Nisio Isin knows this and strays away from it mindfully.

    There is no real story and no reason to care about these characers, since we don't know enough about them until they are about to die, at which point it's too late to get invested.
    Fights started strong, but are pretty meh now and also tensionless because of the predictability. The latest epsiodes had some really awful cuts to boot.

    It was obvious from the concept that rat will win. The meek inherit and all that. This show is dense with meaning and asks you to think. That's the kinda show it is. Not everyone likes that. It's not about rooting for hero characters at all. Not every show has to deliver the same thing. If you came here hoping for a rip off of a show you watched last season then you should maybe try new things more. The real world is dirty and unfair sometimes and there should be stories that reflect that too. Stories that don't just give you what you want all the time. Just like wars.

    This show was a failure. Some argue it's a "character study" and it could've been if it had bothered to study the characters in any way. The Dog is a violent killer and a pre-school teacher? Well cool I'd love to see how he balances those two lives - oh, guess we're not getting into that. Wow Rabbit is crazy! How did he become like that? I'm so fascinated by him! Too bad, we're not getting a drop of his backstory. Joke's on you.
    These shows are the worst because you can see how good it could've been. Instead we got half-baked plot pie.

    I haven’t looked at the Zodiac order to determine the inevitability because the conflict is somewhat exciting. Because you can determine who’s gonna die - and everyone seems to want to spread light on that because then there’s no expectations and now people are unwilling and doubtful about a story’s ending, nobody really truly understands that this is a Battle Royale in its own way. It may be using the same concept as so many other things, but this is still different. Go Bunny!

  • @kuroisora470
    @kuroisora470 7 лет назад +18

    No bro... Everybody gets it... .
    its just that the alternative is boring as hell.
    A battle royale where theres no twists and maybe some different character development here and there but instead we get a clusterfuck of nobody cares backstories for nobody cares characters because a backstory isn't what makes you attached to a character its growth. and In a backstory we get to see some growth but it feels fake when in the actual royale we don't see any shades of it.
    Sheep - smart and crafty... spends an entire episode talking about who he should align with... who to watch out for... he has an answer and opinion of EVERYONE.... except tiger. "Tiger is the weakest of the 12 families..." no reasoning... no nothing... which goes against his entire backstory of plans on top of plans on top of plans... The story gimped his backstory just so they could kill him.
    Then we get to tiger's story.... Literally demon on the battlefield that is well received with battle honors after battle honors including the fact that the tiger family literally owns a dojo to train warriors... SO WHY DID SHEEP SAY THAT SHE'S THE WEAKEST?!?!?!?!
    Horse literally endures all and almost every form of pain and endurance that is possible both physical and mental in order to "toughen up" but he gets cut by ox a couple of times and all of a sudden afraid of death?!?!?!...
    was he not "afraid" of death when he was undergoing training in lava and shit.
    This show is dumb and isn't nisio's best work. :V

      (first off spoilers if anyone cares but you shouldn't)
      I 100% agree with this comment. I literally just gave up watching. The first episode had so much potential but it's all just wasted. Like I can even get on board with a show that embraces it's predicability, when you read/watch Superman or Batman or any super hero, you know how it's gonna end. When you watch any shonen (especially one punch man) you know how it's going to end. Heck, even hunger games is a good example of this, it's a battle Royale where sure you may not know the order but you know the end point. I can accept that to an extent. What I can't accept is a freaking boring story!!!
      And the flashbacks are ridiculous, they barely tie in or have any baring on the show whatsoever besides making you "feel" for the characters you know are about to die, which is so much better executed when you do it within the setting that we actually came to see!
      Like tiger and sheep for example. When we get to sheep's episode we get to see him strategize and get excited to see what he's going to do (then there's tons of boring backstory stuff, whatever). Seeing his thought process taught me much more about him as a character, as well as his history than seeing his backstory. And granted, I actually think he has one of the more compelling backstories. Then we get to tiger, who's falling over drunk and sheep is uncharacteristically stupid and misjudges her and gets destroyed. That little sequence of seeing her sober up (sober's probably not the right word lol) was really interesting and showed us that she's more than the show let on. Granted the show was being super cliché and that reveal was super obvious but at least it was interesting. You know what's not interesting...? ALL OF THE BACKSTORIES! THEY'RE LITERALLY SO BORING THAT I CAN'T REMEMBER A SINGLE ONE OF THEM AND I LITERALLY JUST WATCHED ALL OF THEM RIGHT BEFORE I CAME TO THIS RUclips VIDEO!!!
      And like the fact that the fight scenes are almost all boring and anti-climactic (not due to my knowledge of the results, just due to the choreography) ruins the show for me. Because if I have to sit through the melodrama of a character that I barely care about, at least make their death's captivating.
      I just think this show is a prime example of wasted potential. It doesn't even do much with the character's zodiac signs besides give them costumes that scream "HEY I'M A CHICKEN!' and make them announce "HEY DID YOU KNOW I'M THE CHICKEN?!" every time they fight like we didn't get it through out thick skulls.
      Also last note (just because I actually remembered a backstory), even of the backstories that interested me, like chicken lol, or like sheep I guess... the show doesn't deliver with the follow through. Chicken was actually a one of the few that did follow through where as sheep's totally didn't. Chicken is an assassin that will betray anyone and everyone to get whatever she wants and her death (which I don't need to describe since you've already seen it) pays off or at least connects to its theme. A character who didn't care about anyone changes their nature and dies, cementing out distain for Ox, awesome! What did Sheep's death have to do with his backstory? What did Monkey's? I understand not tying it in for Boar as that's supposed to shock the viewer into thinking that she's the main character but after that you have no excuse. I don't care about twists and shock value (even though that's basically what you come to see in a battle Royale with no main character) all I care about is good execution of a story, and that's why I hated and couldn't finish Juuni Taisen.

    After episode 1, I could already tell what direction the anime was going but by episode 4, I realized there was a pattern and it was the zodiac backwards. Despite knowing this and being able to predict the most likely outcome, I still wouldn’t criticize this anime because I was intrigued how different this anime was and I really want it to be more we’ll known. The anime is basically a recreation of the zodiac story told with different types of themes but they make it interesting because it does give depth on most of the characters and that’s probably what pulled me in so much. I’m shocked that people don’t like it just because it’s predictable but I’m glad there is still some who like it.
