  • In this video, the viewer will get a solid impression of what the US Third Army push early March 1945 looked like. This footage was shot further south and north from where the 94th Infantry Division pushed to the Rhine River. However, the 94th Infantry Division area of battle, the Saar-Moselle Triangle, can be seen in the map that is shown in this film. As the Triangle is shown as cleared, the map dates from about the end of Februari 1945.

Thank you very much for putting this online! My dad, born and raised in Saarbrücken, found this video. He was only two years old by the time of this video. This is really interesting and educational footage!

Thank you for your comment. Growing up in early-post WW2 Germany must have been hard on the family! I talked to many people in the Saar-Moselle Triangle who were kids in 1945, some even in their early teens. They remember a Germany that was still very much destroyed, and where fields and woods were still hazardous to go in because of the ordnance, personnel mines, and bodies. And family members never returing home after the war. Hard times, though many of them remembered perople helping each other, rebuilding businesses, homes and towns.

@@94thinfantrydivision Yeah, it sure was a tough and dangerous time to grow up back then. My father still shares really vivd memories and some pictures of the destruction!
I guess that's what people get, when you hail a fascist regime.
Back in the seventies, when I was a child, the woods around Saarbrücken where we used to play, were scarred all over with bomb craters so deep, a child could hide in them, there was a bunker too. I have recently been there again after decades...
the bunker's still there, but the craters are gone today... just little dents are left, if any!
It is good to see, that wounds can heal, but we have to pay attention, not to forget what caused them!

In March of 1945, my father dreamed of cheeseburgers at the PX. He served with the 94ID from January until VE day.

The "Nazi" guns are russian 85mm AA and 76mm Field guns... 79 years later and the Americans still have not figured it out😅
