Shellfishing: Let’s dig clams at Barnstable Harbor

- It’s 10/25/23 and a gorgeous day so I decided to go dig some clams. I’m digging at the point at Calves Pasture at Barnstable Harbor. The harbor is definitely one of my happy places. To go shellfishing requires a permit, the only days you can go are Sunday, Wednesday, Saturday and Holidays. I’m digging quahogs or hard shell clams, which have to be bigger than 1” at the hinge, I measure them with my gauge. I’m allowed up to a peck per week, today I got a 1/2 of a peck .

Oh thanks so much. Welcome to shellfishing! Preparing clams for the freezer is easy. I just steam them until they just pop open shuck them and freeze them with some of the clam juice. My friend likes to shuck them raw and freezes them with the clam liquor (raw juice). Freezing them in juice/liquor helps protect them from getting freezer burn. I hope that helps. I’m not sure if it’s official yet, but oyster season opens on 11/1/23. If you see me on the beach day hi!
