  • It took me a while to make this video, I apologize for the video being shrunk. Hopefully this video helps you out, I tried to make the video detailed as possible with some tips that I wasn't aware of until I had experience doing valve adjustments. The pages at the end of the video will tell you what you need to do when your putting your cams back in, like putting oil on your shims before you put them back in.

    Please make sure your cam cover is still tightened to oem specification before taking your valve clearance.

    Good video mate. Just a tip. All Japanese bike are in metric. Your 5/16 is actually 8mm. Your 1/2 should be a 12. You seem to be mixing AF and metric. Most measurements will go up and down by 2mm. Example. 8,10,12,14 etc Im pretty sure they leave out all the odd numbers.
    Anyway good to see people working on their own bikes. Keep up the good work!

      Yeah, I had SAE and Metric sockets mixed in a sock. Still need to invest in a descent size tool box for all my tools.

      Brooo whoooo cares. A 5/16 works on 8mm so if that’s what you got use it! I do the same shit.

    Nicely done. Thank you. The only bit I would have added is the actual part where you are looking at the tolerance spec table and then going in with the feeler gauges to determine if you are in spec, but overall very clear and helpful!

      +Triggz , the diameter of the shim you need to order is 7.48mm O.D. I put two links in the description of the video to make your life easier. The first link is to a chaper valve shim kit because it comes with less shims. The second link cost more because it comes with more shims, I ordered the second one. Up to you on how much you'd like to spend but it's always good to have extras.

    Its the same as my KLR650, except, no bucket. The cam rides on the shim, which is ~1 3/8".
    I found, on the KLR650, one could lift the cams and hold them up with small rope. No need to remove them (less chance for mistakes.) With the buckets you may need more room to lift them out.
    We will see when I do my KLX250.
    Also I stuff rags in every opening stuff could fall down into the lower end. I am just flat tired of inventing new cuss words.

    Hi, I think it is a great video that I hope will help me to do a valve clearance by my self.
    I have three questions that I hope you can help me with.
    The first, once you have taken the valve cover of, is it important that the chain is very tightend so it does not relise from any kind of gearwheel at the bottom? (My english is not that great)
    Can the chain "turn" and mess every thing up as you take the cam shafts of?
    The second, when you screw out the 8 bolts, do you do in numerical order when you losen them or when you screw them back? Should it in that case be done back wards from 8-1 when you put them back?
    Thank you once again for the video

    • @MatthewAguero
      @MatthewAguero  7 месяцев назад

      You could use a zip tie on the cam chain and camshaft sprockets to hold them together. Or you can use a white paint marker and mark a line on the chain and sprocket so you know where the chain should be aligned when you put it back on the sprocket. You take loosen and tighten the camshaft covers in 1-8 numerical order. So take them off and put them back on in the 1-8 order.

      Also, the cam chain tensioner needs to removed in order to check your valve clearance. Once you replace your valve shims if needed then you will put reset your cam chain tensioner and put it back on.

    Your video was really helpful for me to adjust shim clearences. Valve clearences, spark plug change etc all done. I have a question for you. Did you have a buzzing while you keep your rpm constant between 5k-6k?

    • @MatthewAguero

      No, I had no buzzing sound.

      Hey, this could be from the tensioner. I've heard a manual one can tune it out.

    Thanks for the video! Just to be clear just to check the clearance you do not need to remove the 8 bolts or the chain tensioner. These steps are only required if you are changing the shim. Is this correct?

    • @MatthewAguero
      @MatthewAguero  4 года назад +2

      Remove the valve cover, then make sure your timing marks on the cams are lined up with the head while on the compression stroke. Then you can check your clearances with your feeler gauge. Your cam lobes should be facing out, there should be a picture on your repair manual. You don't need to lossen your chain tensioner or remove the cam caps unless you need to reshim.

      need to clean and maybe jet it. I have the manual but It would be good if I also watched someone else do it.

    • @MatthewAguero
      @MatthewAguero  7 лет назад

      +Gahl Yogu , you can leave your carburetor on while jetting and cleaning.

    • @MatthewAguero
      @MatthewAguero  7 лет назад

      +Gahl Yogu , just lossen the boots and twist your carburetor bowl toward you.

    • @gahlyogu4570
      @gahlyogu4570 7 лет назад

      ill look into doing it like that!
      another reason why I want to open up the cab just to see what kind of condition is... I bought it not too long ago (maybe 3 months) I want to get a better idea of the parts.
      If I did it like this, I guess id only be able to see up from the bottom

  • @oodles86
    @oodles86 3 года назад

    I did mine without marking the cam gears. Have any tips on getting the timing correct now? I'm assuming mine is off because I'm not able to rotate the crank very far by wrench.

      Refer to your service manual to get your cams back in time. You can Google it and go to images.
