    No cap, welcome everyone to the biggest, most ambitious video ever filmed here on PocketRockets!
    Over a year in the making, waiting to get my hands on the all-new Ford Mustang Mach-E; a car that has divided opinions worldwide not just because it is Ford's first attempt at a Full EV platform but mainly because of the use of the 'Mustang' name
    Now it's safe to say, I'm no EV fanboy; purely as their severe flawed concept (relying on batteries for range), the UK's forceful approach to getting people to invest their money into buying one against the state of the current infrastructure available and no real value for money compared to I.C.E apart from the claimed "environmental" benefits
    To completely take bias and personal criticism out of the question, I decided to take the plunge and invited my good friend ‪@CarObsession‬ on a road trip from Land's End to John O'Groats to put the Mach-E to the test!
    Can we make it? Watch to find out
    Thank you to Aaron for taking out his time to join me on this trip and of course a big shout out to the team at Ford UK for bravely loaning me the car to test for the week

    Excellent video providing a dose of reality re the lack of charging infrastructure. Same here in Ireland with many older 22kWh but far too few fast chargers about.

  • @DanAchatz1
    @DanAchatz1 2 года назад +3

    One comment here. The Ford charge times are based on 150Kw chargers. Most of the UK chargers are 50Kw. This is because the UK was putting in EV fast (semi fast) charging infrastructure very early in the game. It's very expensive to update DC fast chargers chargers.

    • @CarObsession
      @CarObsession 2 года назад +1

      Hi Dan, you are dead right there, but I'm sure (Chris will need to confirm this) that that chargers we were using were 120kW so whilst they're not AS fast, I don't believe it should take 1.5 hours. For example, I had the Mach E a few weeks back and it to 1 hour 45 when using a 50kW charger.

    • @PocketRockets
      @PocketRockets  2 года назад +1

      Yes you are correct; Ford's charge time is based on 150kWh chargers and we only had access to 'up to 120kWh' charging stations but the ones we used weren't giving us even 60kWh of charge.
      As to your comment also, off camera I frequently charged the car at Gridserve Braintree on a 'up to 350kW charger' and only averaged a charge rate of 40-50 kWh.
      As Aaron said it still shouldn't have taken us an average of an 1 hour and 45 mins.
      Thank you for watching Dan

    Just like everything else in this world, to each his own. There are plenty people that will enjoy the performance (power and torque), convenience (home charging), and technology in an EV. If you’re a road warrior then an EV certainly isn’t your best option. Those of us that regularly commute less than 100 miles and want a practical car with a sub 4 second 0-60 time for well under $100k an EV is a great choice. Not to mention the Mach-e has stunning good looks.
    EVs don’t need to be the future. Choice is great for consumers and having the option to go electric is a good thing. I have a gas powered truck and the Mach E. It’s a great combination and a couple years ago I would have laughed in your face if someone suggested I get an EV.

  • @Mathingon
    @Mathingon 2 года назад +1

    The main problem is that WLTP is used so much in Europe and the UK. This misinforms people on the actual real world range and it’s totally inaccurate for trips like this compared to the EPA rated range.
    This shorter range compounded with the apparent lack of chargers faster than 50kW make a huge problem for road trips like this.

    • @PocketRockets
      @PocketRockets  2 года назад

      Yes, I already had a rough understanding of the problems of WLTP being used on EV's and estimated a rough route plan by using a lesser range for each charge but the car at the time of filming decided to make life a misery; ultimately making the trip unpredictable (which is madness and completely unacceptable)
      The car wasn't even reaching the US EPA rated range so in the context of a long-distance trip (in the UK) the car couldn't do a simple trip that an I.C.E car could do with ease, as a result, it doesn't come close to working as demonstrated/proven.
      Charging stations were rated "up to 120kW" but in reality, we weren't getting those speeds/service, again I planned to use rapid chargers across the trip but again we had our pants pulled down.
      Saying that, I'd like to re-attempt a long-distance EV trip in Tesla to see the differences in the use of infrastructure, etc.
      Thanks for watching and commenting! All the best 👍

    Thanks for your efforts in pulling this video together guys, made for really interesting viewing. You make some very commendable arguments for why EV's aren't suitable for now and I would agree with you - to a point.
    For the Mach-e and other EVs with say stated 200+ mileage range (yes I hear you, temperature impact and WLTP figures are usually way off the mark) they are great for everyday driving, work commute etc. However, they will not cut it if you regularly drive long distances. If you regularly boost up and down the motorway for 3 hours at a time, then an EV just isn't for you. I occasionally have a 300 mile round drip, maybe 2-3 times a year and happy to stop off and charge for an hour to do so and pay the privilege. It's still cheaper than ICE. 95% of my driving is easily within the capabilities of an EV and I would imagine my driving habits are similar to the majority of the population.
    I own a Mach-e, the standard RWD with a 'claimed' range of 273 miles and I don't have any issues with driving day to day. I have a home charger and I comfortably get 150 miles minimum (winter) to about 230 in Summer. The claimed range of 273 miles might be achievable in 80 degree heat going downhill!
    So, I think its a little unfair to knock EV's per se. Yes, there are issues with the charging infrastructure, in particular the reliance and maintenance of them (no point having thousands if 30% are constantly our of order) but I think and hope that will improve. Otherwise I'm a convert and would not go back to ICE.

    • @PocketRockets

      Hi Mark! Welcome to the channel, thank you for stopping by, being constructive & polite, oh and of course for watching!
      EV's maybe cheaper to run currently, but remember this year alone the UK government grants for EV buyers have halved (doesn't make much sense considering it was designed to help people switch)
      Also, they have already backtracked on investments to deliver a charging infrastructure to keep up with the rate of EVs being bought 🤷🏽‍♂️
      Not everyone has spare change in their pockets to offer the current offering of EVs available on the market and the ones that may allow people's wallet to stretch, don't cut the mustard when it comes to a decent range
      Also, EV of course benefit from tax free and other incentives but for how much longer alongside the environmental impacts they will cause in the long term (battery replacement/disposal)
      This also excludes the cost of home chargers to get save yourself getting fleeced at public stations and not even taking into account if you have the luxury of off-roading parking
      As I'll come back to, a car is a concept designed to improve and make your life easy/convenient; as we have proven in the most extreme case - you can't rely on it
      Ford have made a great first attempt at building an EV, don't get me wrong but at the same time there are too many flaws (as demonstrated)
      All the best 👍🏼

    • @PocketRockets

      Not sure the issues you have with my response Mark, completely up for a discussion with you
      They are all fair, reasonable and backed up by the video itself alongside concerning points I.e. battery replacement/environmental impacts that no one seems to think/talk about
      I've experienced a I.C.E MG ZS and it's cheap for a reason, still not really a solution
      Out of curiosity, apart from the short term cost savings; what made you switch to EV?

    • @markhouston6201
      @markhouston6201 2 года назад

      @@PocketRockets I switched because I actually wanted to play my part in, however small, improving the climate change disaster. It was made easier by the offer of an electric company car, so I'm very fortunate in that regard. The whole issue of battery manufacture and disposal is not as damaging as many people think, the has been done very damaging and frankly misleading articles published. Manufacturers have a duty and moral responsibility to minimise any environmental impact. Batteries will in most cars outlive the car itself. Degradation had more been proven to be insignificant over the life of a car and when that time does come, day 10 years on, the batteries can be repurposed. They won't be thrown onto landfill. The entire industry is relient on economies of scale. As EV ownership is adopted (if the UK government don't screw it up) then the challenges you highlight will be overcome. We all need to embrace this change, not create more barriers.

    Looked a rough trip. Just done 500 miles for £37 in a Tesla LR having topped up at home for 40p. I think it was more the Mach e and the speed of the rapid chargers rather than EV’s in general.

    • @PocketRockets
      @PocketRockets  2 года назад +2

      Rough is one word for it 🙈 ... Even if the car performed faultlessly, we would still of had to charge 3 - 4 times for a minimum of 45 minutes each
      Alongside that, we would still have the risks of being stuck waiting for others using the pods, pods not working, the pods not performing or a mixture of all three
      It seems Tesla ownership is a lot different to a normal EV so can't rule EVs being heavily flawed, the points above highlights it on its own, a shame as the infrastructure should be one provider ... but like everything there is a motive of greed 👎🏼

    Saying the car didn’t perform really isn’t accurate. The issue is clearly with the charging infrastructure in the UK as it clearly is not ready for long trips. In the US with access to 150Kw chargers I’ve done 500 mile trips in about 10 hours with no issues with my Mustang Mach-E. From what I saw in your video any EV not just the Mach-E would have the issues you ran into because of the charging infrastructure.

    Hi Mr PocketRockets
    Sorry I didn't catch your name I must of missed it, so I'll just call you Mr P....
    I took up you invitation to watch your video on the Ford Mustang Mach E EV.
    Well at first I thought, Woww you lucky buggers getting to do a review drive to John O' Groats from Lands End.... But at the end of it I really felt for you guys. For EV's that journey was just Pants.😭
    I can't agree with you any less, you're right on the money as far as I'm concerned. The charging times added to your journey is just ridiculous. And as Aaron rightly stated the extra time waiting getting on a charging station? And this is before EV's take the majority of vehicles on the road.
    Having to rely on service stations to refuel/recharge, well Mr P I've been driving nearly 40yrs now, and I'm a guy that refuses to be taken advantage of. And I can probably count on one hand how many times I've use motorway services to refuel. I avoid them like the Plague. Robbing ********............😤
    The wife and I love to visit Scotland as much as we can. And like any holiday we go on in this country, we always leave with a full tank and try our best to refill once off the motorways/Services. So I can't see us owning a full EV at present, if ever?
    I can remember back in the 70's my father had his car converted to Calor gas, as he worked for the company and he must of had some kind of incentive offered to do so. The car could still run on petrol though, he just had the advantage to run on either.
    The point is though, finding a place to refill the gas cylinder when it ran out. At home it wasn't a problem as he refilled at the depot where he worked. But if we travelled away he would have to find places which had filling points. He was given a directory which listed all these locations, and sometimes you could drive a good hour to get there.
    Gas was a slow option to arrive at fuel forecourts, perhaps it didn't really take off, so I do wonder whether the EV will?
    I don't know if electric is the answer, I also wonder whether there will be some new kind a green energy which will be invented in the future. Who knows?
    Referring back to your Kuga PHEV drive is the reason I came across your reviews, as we are changing our present vehicle over to this model.
    I understood that you were proofing out the spec mileage on "EV only" But people need to understand that the PHEV is designed to operate mainly as a combined Combustible engine/electric motor, when the driving conditions allow, hence "Hybrid" This is a interim vehicle really from probably getting us from combustible engines to electric.
    The small electric range on the PHEV is what I understand is for more urban driving where speeds of 30mph or lower, congestion or Low/Ultra Emission Zones come into play.
    Although you can put the vehicle into "EV Only", I feel it's better to use this mode in more appropriate conditions, where as in Hybrid Mode you are getting more regeneration to the battery if you are not too heavily footed.
    Thank you for your research regarding the batteries. That doesn't look good future prospects either. I did hear that one about the Nissan Leaf. I friend of mine tried one out on a few days test drive before he went on and purchased a Tesla.

      Thanks for dropping by on the video, very thankful and glad it gave you an insight into our long distance EV test
      Crazy to think service station fuel are still allowed to rob everyone 🤯
      Extremely disappointed in the outcome, I looked forward to travelling further into Scotland for some driving roads and scenery
      I do get your statement on PHEVs but as I will explain in the full review (yet to come) it seems criminal and kind of backwards making a SUV even more heavier especially if you want to use in towns, the range you get from it and then the bill to replace the battery for the little you get back
      Despite that, the Kuga is a lovely car, I'm no SUV fan but I did enjoy my time with it (aside the PHEV part haha)
      I hope you're not waiting too long for yours to arrive
      As always, thanks for watching and hope you'd be kind to subscribe so you don't miss out on the Kuga Review coming soon 👍🏼
