JIMIN also studied ballet & traditional Korean dance while attending Busan High School of the Arts. Jimin still went to Just Dance Academy to take hip hop classes whenever he could because his first love has always been hip hop, even though he was now majoring in contemporary! JIMIN even had an offer to dance overseas, but declined because he also wanted to become a singer since the 2nd grade, to the dismay of one of his dance instructors who said "The world of dance was going to lose a great artist"!! The exertion of the choreography. Especially in some of the fancams of live versions of Serendipity, it's clear how exhausting this dance is. At the end of their world tour in 2019, Jimin announced he would not be doing Serendipity live anymore. A chronic shoulder injury was worsened by including that choreo in almost every show on their last world tour. One help for people doing the dance compilations is that Jimin is so precise from performance to performance, both in timing and positioning. Camera angles are where the editors have the most work to do, to resolve visual conflicts.

Some of the songs have more layering than others, depending on how much choreo is being done and how many members are performing (can’t harmonize by yourself 😅 ) and the sound they are going for, some songs actually either don’t have much backing vocals at all or only on certain parts. In some performances they will mix up the timing of their delivery or not sing at all either for the audience to sing or just to flex to demonstrate they are singing and rapping live. It is usually readily evident what are backing vocals and what are live. I can say at the concert it was amazing how much live singing/rapping/harmonizing/adlib they did and how great it sounded even when dancing and jumping around like a bunch of crackheads on a bouncy house during Anpanman. 💜

BTS overall is well known for their quite intense choreographies and Jimin is a nothing but a perfectionist. The moment he steps on stage, for those few minutes he takes on the journey with him and will make you to forget about everything else. He always performs with such a precision and his technique is only unique to him, plus the singing on top of that. His vocals are always live. So even though there is a backing track, he still sings live, but has plenty of room to focus on his dancing too. Overall it’s an absolutely amazing performance. I saw one of the late night host in US say once that when BTS were on they asked them for the track thinking it would be music and vocals like every other artist but BTS's track was just the instrumental...no vocals. He was shocked but said they sang amazing while dancing. His respected them a lot for their live performance vs. lipsynincing.

That doesn't edit so much from clip yo clip, sort of ruining the slow of Jimin's breathtaking spectacular dance moves as well as the equally awesome choreography!! With someone like Jimin, who's such a stunning artist and performer, he doesn't need a stage mix to enhance his performance because seeing Jimin perform without this editing, though done quite well, is awesome enough to see!! You're correct in your assumption that they choose one audio and use multiple videos. The editor usually indicates in the description which performance they used for the audio but all of the videos and audio are from the dvd. As far as I know, the company/crew records for every concert in the tour though they only released the ones in most major cities. The transitions are so perfect because of how consistent their performances are, they retain the technicality and energy at the same level at almost every concert.
Jimin performed this song for Love Yourself tour, 42 times (14 countries) from 2018-2019. And additional 20 concerts for Love Yourself: Speak Yourself stadium tours in 2019. yes, they often sing to a backing track but it's also not like a full one-song type of thing usually they can go back and forth with it. they use it mostly when there's more intense choreography. and they didn't mimic the lyric during those few parts cause they're not trying to lipsync. i recommend you to watch not the live stage mix you can see it pretty clear.
Nobody in history can perform with this kind of choreo without a backing track. Not even MJ, who actually lip synced a lot. Yes, even the king of pop. It is for the entire performance. So when people get all up in arms saying BTS lip sync or sing to a backing track it whatever it’s just annoying. They are performers and they can all sing/rap

*I am certain you realize this but I still would like to note (just in case) that with stage mix the VIDEO is edited from different performances, but the vocal track is only one performance recording. I would recognize this particular audio every time 😅* Also, as others have already said, there are a few reasons they have backtrack layering during performances: 1) Like here because of overly complicated choreography + originally song has many harmonies. So, they want to make the song sound fuller which is why all the layers and harmonies are saved (he's singing here alone, other members won't back him with that). But also Jimin's choreography for solo songs is always the most difficult one. Keep in mind, he's doing it ALONE (no breaks for someone else to sing the line). So, they'd like him to have a support in case he happens to be out of breath and decides to drop the line. Usually, BTS members still all sing each line over backtrack, but the backtrack would stay there just in case. 2) As a stylistic choice. To enunciate some words or phrases. To blend vocals and create harmonies. All those things. To make is sound like the recorded track as much as possible. 3) Combo of all previously said. Usually BTS has a few types of performances: all together with banger choreo, all together just jumping/walking around the stage, solo songs. First performance will need more backtrack to help during hard choreo and to create layering. Other members will be as busy as lead singer at the moment just doing the dance. The second type would have less backtrack or *very very* quiet one as members themselves would harmonize with each other and create cool ad-libs. Third was explained via first point :D
BTS does use a backtrack due to the fact that they are their own backup singers. And to fill in spots that are known to be heavily choreographed (so giving performer a specific count for breathing is necessary) then the artists continues. You see this with Jimin because he does many sequences where his body (rib cage) becomes twisted or contorted. This makes breathing/singing while dancing very difficult, yet he does. For when he is unable to the background track is there at about 20-30%, just in case. This also makes sure that in a building of 20-50,000 people everyone hears the artists the same , from the front to the back. At least that is how it was explained to me by an electronic specialist.
I love seeing all this love for Jimin here. I recently ran into a RUclips short where the person who posted it posted it because they thought it was funny and cute how they interact. Literally like brothers messing around . Then “fandom were hating on Jimin and calling him evil because V pushed Jimin during dance rehearsal and then Jimin apparently was “evil and disgusting” because he “kicked” V but it was literally all playful and everyone was laughing. He literally just pushed him with his foot and then pretend kicked him. Hobi was doing it too but people just hate Jimin and it makes me sad because he seems like such a genuinely nice person and him and V are so close. People just love to hate Jimin for no reason. Idk why but especially Jimin gets hate. The video was from when they were really young too. Boys act a fool and mess around like that. People need to stop just spreading hate that you have no way of actually knowing. All the other boys were laughing too like I’m pretty sure if he was seriously hurting him that they wouldn’t be laughing. Sorry total rant. Point is that it made me feel better coming here and reading these nice comments.

Jimin is the bts differentiator in my personal opinion- he makes bts stand out from the many other groups. His unique voice tone and dance style that combines hiphop, contemporary modern dance and martial arts ! No one can compare to this passionate captivating performer!

I have mixed feelings about the stage-mixes. I like how you can see the consistency of the artist's dancing across the different performances as well as all the amazing outfits they wear, but I feel like you're missing out on seeing the true "live" performance when it keeps jumping between stages. *shrugs* And you are correct; it's one vocal track from a live performance then different videos mixed. The layered vocals depend on the song. Some songs, especially on a solo performance, that have crazy choreo, will have the vocal track louder throughout or just during certain portions. The guys record most of their own backing and harmonies so often you are hearing those on the backing track and then the artist is singing the main vocal live. There are other adlibs or portions, such as growly parts, where it cold hurt their voice to do it over and over live, so those will be left in in the track... like I said, it depends on the song and the venue.
i guess the balance between complete live singing and with backing track mostly depends upon the choreography of the song. especially since they perform over 20+ songs each concert it would be hard to sing live for all of it. serendipity is heavily choreo based so im not surprised it has a lot of backing track
You are the only reactor so far who seems to be immune to the “Jimin Effect!” Not once did you mention his ethereal beauty. So many, straight, gay or anything at all, fall under Jimin’s spell, especially watching “Serendipity.” I respect your complete focus on the music!
To add to why they use a backing track for performances. One reason is because the vocalists usually do their own layered backing vocals during recording. So Jimin does his own layered harmonisations and stylised ad libs. Obviously, he can only sing the main melody during the live performance.
for the layered vocals: i'm not 100% sure, but from what i gather, they use playback during a few of their more dance-heavy performances. serendipity is definitely one of them, so that's most likely why it's there.
My hypothesis is that they use the backing track when they will be doing a lot of quick, jerky dancing in order to keep the audio quality higher when their voices would fluctuate.

You're correct in your assumption that they choose one audio and use multiple videos. The editor usually indicates in the description which performance they used for the audio but all of the videos and audio are from the dvd. As far as I know, the company/crew records for every concert in the tour though they only released the ones in most major cities. The transitions are so perfect because of how consistent their performances are, they retain the technicality and energy at the same level at almost every concert.
Jimin performed this song for Love Yourself tour, 42 times (14 countries) from 2018-2019. And additional 20 concerts for Love Yourself: Speak Yourself stadium tours in 2019. yes, they often sing to a backing track but it's also not like a full one-song type of thing usually they can go back and forth with it. they use it mostly when there's more intense choreography. and they didn't mimic the lyric during those few parts cause they're not trying to lipsync. i recommend you to watch not the live stage mix you can see it pretty clear.
Nobody in history can perform with this kind of choreo without a backing track. Not even MJ, who actually lip synced a lot. Yes, even the king of pop. It is for the entire performance. So when people get all up in arms saying BTS lip sync or sing to a backing track it whatever it’s just annoying. They are performers and they can all sing/rap

*I am certain you realize this but I still would like to note (just in case) that with stage mix the VIDEO is edited from different performances, but the vocal track is only one performance recording. I would recognize this particular audio every time 😅*
Also, as others have already said, there are a few reasons they have backtrack layering during performances:
1) Like here because of overly complicated choreography + originally song has many harmonies. So, they want to make the song sound fuller which is why all the layers and harmonies are saved (he's singing here alone, other members won't back him with that). But also Jimin's choreography for solo songs is always the most difficult one. Keep in mind, he's doing it ALONE (no breaks for someone else to sing the line). So, they'd like him to have a support in case he happens to be out of breath and decides to drop the line. Usually, BTS members still all sing each line over backtrack, but the backtrack would stay there just in case.
2) As a stylistic choice. To enunciate some words or phrases. To blend vocals and create harmonies. All those things. To make is sound like the recorded track as much as possible.
3) Combo of all previously said. Usually BTS has a few types of performances: all together with banger choreo, all together just jumping/walking around the stage, solo songs. First performance will need more backtrack to help during hard choreo and to create layering. Other members will be as busy as lead singer at the moment just doing the dance. The second type would have less backtrack or *very very* quiet one as members themselves would harmonize with each other and create cool ad-libs. Third was explained via first point :D
He sang this in acapella and it's much better than the layered vocals.
BTS does use a backtrack due to the fact that they are their own backup singers. And to fill in spots that are known to be heavily choreographed (so giving performer a specific count for breathing is necessary) then the artists continues.
You see this with Jimin because he does many sequences where his body (rib cage) becomes twisted or contorted. This makes breathing/singing while dancing very difficult, yet he does. For when he is unable to the background track is there at about 20-30%, just in case.
This also makes sure that in a building of 20-50,000 people everyone hears the artists the same , from the front to the back. At least that is how it was explained to me by an electronic specialist.
I love seeing all this love for Jimin here. I recently ran into a RUclips short where the person who posted it posted it because they thought it was funny and cute how they interact. Literally like brothers messing around . Then “fandom were hating on Jimin and calling him evil because V pushed Jimin during dance rehearsal and then Jimin apparently was “evil and disgusting” because he “kicked” V but it was literally all playful and everyone was laughing. He literally just pushed him with his foot and then pretend kicked him. Hobi was doing it too but people just hate Jimin and it makes me sad because he seems like such a genuinely nice person and him and V are so close. People just love to hate Jimin for no reason. Idk why but especially Jimin gets hate.
The video was from when they were really young too. Boys act a fool and mess around like that. People need to stop just spreading hate that you have no way of actually knowing. All the other boys were laughing too like I’m pretty sure if he was seriously hurting him that they wouldn’t be laughing.
Sorry total rant. Point is that it made me feel better coming here and reading these nice comments.
Not a Jiminie bias but I was sooo mezmerized by this performance of Jiminie back in Love Yourself Tour, just too beautiful. That white clothes with crystals vest, I was able to see that live. :)
Jimin is the bts differentiator in my personal opinion- he makes bts stand out from the many other groups. His unique voice tone and dance style that combines hiphop, contemporary modern dance and martial arts ! No one can compare to this passionate captivating performer!

I have mixed feelings about the stage-mixes. I like how you can see the consistency of the artist's dancing across the different performances as well as all the amazing outfits they wear, but I feel like you're missing out on seeing the true "live" performance when it keeps jumping between stages. *shrugs*
And you are correct; it's one vocal track from a live performance then different videos mixed. The layered vocals depend on the song. Some songs, especially on a solo performance, that have crazy choreo, will have the vocal track louder throughout or just during certain portions. The guys record most of their own backing and harmonies so often you are hearing those on the backing track and then the artist is singing the main vocal live. There are other adlibs or portions, such as growly parts, where it cold hurt their voice to do it over and over live, so those will be left in in the track... like I said, it depends on the song and the venue.

i guess the balance between complete live singing and with backing track mostly depends upon the choreography of the song. especially since they perform over 20+ songs each concert it would be hard to sing live for all of it. serendipity is heavily choreo based so im not surprised it has a lot of backing track
You are the only reactor so far who seems to be immune to the “Jimin Effect!” Not once did you mention his ethereal beauty. So many, straight, gay or anything at all, fall under Jimin’s spell, especially watching “Serendipity.” I respect your complete focus on the music!
To add to why they use a backing track for performances. One reason is because the vocalists usually do their own layered backing vocals during recording. So Jimin does his own layered harmonisations and stylised ad libs. Obviously, he can only sing the main melody during the live performance.
Apanman live is super funny because of the interaction between the members and Jimin also pranks RM a few times
you should watch some of their performances on music shows. The quality and quantity of the performances in Korea are insane.

for the layered vocals: i'm not 100% sure, but from what i gather, they use playback during a few of their more dance-heavy performances. serendipity is definitely one of them, so that's most likely why it's there.
My hypothesis is that they use the backing track when they will be doing a lot of quick, jerky dancing in order to keep the audio quality higher when their voices would fluctuate.
