The best football commentator ever. "He's gonna flick one" - "It's up for grabs now...!" - An outstanding career full of excitement, passion and dignity for the game he loved. RIP Brian Moore!
He was the best in the business. Head and shoulders above anyone else. I watch him every Saturday morning on itv4 Big Match revisited. Brian Moore, class act.
Brian Moore was the voice and face of English football for fans in Australia he hosted Big League Soccer back in the 1980s, For a lad growing up in Perth I couldn't wait each week to watch the latest highlights from England and listen to Brian's wonderful commentary. I miss the days of the old 1st Division we even saw 2nd division matches, football just doesn't seem the same these days. I was saddened to hear of his passing back in 2001
I will always remember Brian Moore's commentary such a distinct voice superbly describing the game, no endless stats and facts were needed. I also remember listening to his last ever commentary (World Cup Final 98) his sign off was something like "thats it from me but it's France's night" such an understated and dignified goodbye from an old school gent. Brian you were the best, RIP.
As a fan I feel that someone like Brian Moore was as important to me as any player. His commentary was so dramatic and enjoyable and full of class. Today's lot simply are not in the same league.
Brian Moore commentated on the FA Cup Finals, 69, 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78, 79, 80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87 and 88 which ITV’s last FA Cup Final he had commentated but he returned commentating on the FA Cup Final in 1998. Brian commentated on both Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal, Manchester United, Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa, Aberdeen and Everton triumphs in Europe. 72 and 84 Tottenham winning the UEFA Cup. 80, Nottingham Forest retaining the European Cup. 78 and 84 Liverpool winning the European Cups. 91, Manchester United winning CWC. 82, Aston Villa winning the European Cup. 83, Aberdeen winning the CWC. 95, Arsenal winning the CWC and 85, Everton winning the CWC. Brian has witness them all as well as England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in the Home Internationals too.
The most unique voice of football and a part of my childhood when he commentated on the Liverpool v Arsenal it's up for grabs now sends a shiver down my spine. RIP Brian Moore
Best commentator by a mile. Also an excellent presenter. His voice and discriptions were nearly always perfect in the moment. You could could tell he had great knowledge of the game, he could often tell when something was going to happen, you could hear it in his voice. Best by a mile, no question. Very much missed.
I am not a big football fan I have to say, but I remember watching England in world cups over the years. His commentating was such that he built the tension, once the ball went past the centre line his voice got louder and you could hear the excitement and disappointment in his voice. If you were listening with your eyes closed it was as if you were there. Respect.
I've just watched the BBC tribute to David Coleman and yet as good as he was I still thought Brian Moore was the best at Football commentary. Saturday morning's 'On the Ball', Sunday's 'The Big Match with the Fun Spots to music and most of all, FA Cup Finals at the old and still the best Wembley Stadium - Mr Moore, thanks for the memories as part of my growing up - god bless you and RIP :)
agree with you mostly[ coleman was a better commentator [ but i did prefer the n big match to match of the day[ seemed more entertaining, magic sunday afternoon memories, now adly gone forever r i p brian[ even though you did seem to not want england
Brian died on 1 September 2001, the same day that England won 5-1 in Germany. I would love him to have done the commentary for that match. RIP Brian. You were, and still are, the best commentator of all time.
We still miss this man. He was so honest and sincere. Luckily he commentated during the best years of football and avoided the greedy football we have now. I grew up listening to his wonderful commentary and will NEVER forget such a great professional broadcaster. I didnt know much more about Brian but I guess he had a great wife & family behind him because no one person could be that good without that background support. Thank you Brian Moore for making football so interesting and dramatic.
He was brilliant how I long for the days of Sunday Match live on ITV with Elton Welsby. Those days were great with the old First Division, short shorts and Saint & Greavsie.
RIP. By far my favourite commentator. And he died the same day that England beat Germany, in Germany, 5-1. I would love to have heard him commentate on that.
He is the greatest, without any doubt. My love of the sport as a young boy was largely shaped by his commentary. The two are synonymous with each other.
"... And Sunderland has done it!!!", great voice, great commentator and a very gentleman, simply the best Brian Moore (and I'm not an Englishman...) ❤️❤️❤️
Dsvid Coleman had nothing on this man, thinking back to when I used to watch the Big Match, loved Brians commentary on all the fiotball matches I have watched growing up, Gid bless you R.I.P Brian.
On the ball on Saturday afternoons and the big match on Sunday lunch times , Brian was a massive part of my childhood wonderful memories of a really nice guy,
During the Euros we've been watching clips of old England games commented on by Brian Moore and the bloke wipes the floor with everyone around today, great man
I was only 23 years old when he died but when I was a kid l absolutely loved his Commentary he will never be forgotten his Legacy lives my all time Favourite Football Commentator Brian Moore.
Great commentator up there with Motson and Davies as the best we've ever had unlike all the cheesy Mid Atlantic sound-alikes we have now, Drury, Champion, Tyldsley, Mowbray, etc. I can't stand any of them. RIP Mooro
He died the day England beat Germany 5-1 in September 2001, I would love to have heard him commentating on that game. By far my favourite commentator. A legend.
i miss him, i really do. his tone whenever a british team played, you could tell he was rooting for em. not a criticism, he was the definitive modern commentator
Still the greatest of all time for me. The Michael Thomas goal was such a painful moment for me but I will always watch it again and again because of the genius that was Brian Moore. RIP a legend and a gentleman.
I called a phone in once and spoke with him on Talk Talk radio. He had the chairman of Chester FC, Terry Smith, an American. Smith had destroyed the club and we were heading for the conference-and indeed did so. Brian tried to defend him (Smith) but I asked him how he would feel if his own club, Gillingham, was destroyed by a chairman. He had no answer. I wish I had a recording of it for posterity. Like many hear he was my Sunday pm must watch on The Big Match in the 70's. Legend
To this day I still find myself talking in the voice of Brian Moore when playing Fifa et al. Those half-growled Rs are critical: "ToRRRes...DRRogba....oh, gRReat goal!"
Brian Moore is definitely the voice of ITV football. Brian has witness so many football classics on ITV including Arsenal winning the league title for the first time twenty nine years ago at Liverpool. Before that when Arsenal completely the Doubles forty seven years ago and when Arsenal beat Manchester United in that dramatic FA Cup Final, thirty nine years ago. John Barnes scored that great goal in Rio for England against Brazil, thirty four years ago and when Sunderland beat Leeds in the 73 FA Cup Final. Brian hosted the Big Match on LWT, Midweek Sport Special and On the Ball both on ITV produced by Thames Television and LWT.
Without doubt the greatest commnentator - i only caught the tail end of his career 1994 -98 but he's still the voice of ITV Football all these years on. I think the closest to him in style is probably Mike Ingham on 5live.
Great man great commentator footballs elite commentator better than the history lessons you get these days from Tyldesley and Townsend on ITV. Mr Moore up there with Motty, JP, Barry Davies and Martin Tyler
I agree with a lot of the comments below. It would be nice if ITV produced an hour special or even a mini series which contains his best bits, especially as next year will be a decade since his untimely death. Yes, I would like to see some clips of OTB too. I can just about remember him doing it in the late seventies, before handing the reins to Ian St John!
The gentleman of sport on the telly, with a voice you instantly recognize. Miss his like. And the football was better, then, not this boring tactical kickabout I've been watching lately.
My commentary memory of Brian is Spurs v. Man Utd, one New Year's Day, and Paul Gascoigne said something to the ref, who called him over and sent him off - 'And for that ... ... Gascoigne WILL GET A RED CARD!' - weren't dished out as often as today, so the surprise totally overtook him!
I know that i was not the only one that used to stick 2 fingers up at establishment and watch major finals on itv rather than bbc so loved the rapport between Brian and off-the-wall Ron Atkinson (ok so it is not politically-correct to like our Ron these days but he was a big noise in my beloved ATV land of the 1970s). I am too young to remember Hugh Johns doing the 1966 world cup final but was there cheering him on in major tournaments in the 70s and 80s, aggrieved that Moore had the big games but man enough aged 12 to admit he was a safe pair of hands on the big occasion. Brian knew his stuff and let the game flow unlike the over-excited John Motson if both sides were live or the second-rate Tony Gubba if BBC only had highlights (this standard was raised a bit when Gerry Sinstadt left itv to do Gubba's job on the bbc because Gubba was off at the ice skating or Barry Davies was on court 1 at Wimbledon)
The best football commentator ever. "He's gonna flick one" - "It's up for grabs now...!" - An outstanding career full of excitement, passion and dignity for the game he loved. RIP Brian Moore!
Best is Peter drury
Brian Moore was the best, the most professional, the perfect gentleman.
I loved Brian Moore. It was like listening to a friend commentate on a game in your front room.
He was the best in the business. Head and shoulders above anyone else. I watch him every Saturday morning on itv4 Big Match revisited. Brian Moore, class act.

Can't believe it's been nigh on 20 yrs since this LEGEND passed away! Awe, he was in my Top 3 (@least) ever anyway.. Never forgotten ❤ :-(
As a fan I feel that someone like Brian Moore was as important to me as any player. His commentary was so dramatic and enjoyable and full of class. Today's lot simply are not in the same league.

Brian Moore and The Big Match were part of my childhood through to my teens. Happy memories!
A wonderful man and a wonderful commentator, his voice was always full of emotion. You will never be forgotten brian.

I remember Barry Davies paying tribute to him on the BBC and his voice wavered has held couldn't hold back the emotion.

"... And Sunderland has done it!!!", great voice, great commentator and a very gentleman, simply the best Brian Moore (and I'm not an Englishman...) ❤️❤️❤️
Great voice and intelligent commentary, a great man, sadly missed.
Dsvid Coleman had nothing on this man, thinking back to when I used to watch the Big Match, loved Brians commentary on all the fiotball matches I have watched growing up, Gid bless you R.I.P Brian.
David Coleman was the best athletics commentator, Brian Moore was the best football commentator, up there with Motson and Davies.
" Its in thaaayer!"

Greatest football commentator of all time - and only second to Murray Walker as THE greatest commentator of all sports.

I loved the banter he would have with Brian Clough!

I was only 23 years old when he died but when I was a kid l absolutely loved his Commentary he will never be forgotten his Legacy lives my all time Favourite Football Commentator Brian Moore.

Brian Moore has passed away...Another icon of my youth

I think it's bollocks that this was the only tribute there was - to my knowledge anyway. He was worthy of at least a special documentary.
THE VOICE OF FOOTBALL.
To this day I still find myself talking in the voice of Brian Moore when playing Fifa et al. Those half-growled Rs are critical:
"ToRRRes...DRRogba....oh, gRReat goal!"
Runs Martin Tyler close as the best ever for me. Loved his voice growing up, especially commentating on the Champions League in the 90s.
Sunday lunch then the Big Match..great memories
As the song goes......Simply the best.
My Dad was telling about Brian Moore saying he was the best commentator of all time. After watching this tribute. I can see why my Dad was right.
Yep I’d agree he was brilliant, that voice made those games better!
The best of all time

For me the best commentator the game has ever seen. And i dont say that lightly!
A CLASS APART.
Surprised Brian never went with the buzz cut? Great commentator and great man.
He was the man.
The best. No one came close then and no-one does now.

Excellent commentator and a great guy.
he once gave me and my mate his chesse sandwich for helping him at Charlton.... top man

God rest his soul...
Hugh Johns was my favourite :)
I could've sworn he said the "Brolin, Dahlin, Brolin" line too.
@djjoff Totally agree.....I don't remember any tribute programme or anything such being done afterwards either.
Brian you keep calling him a clown! hahaha
the best
