    There was this guy I meet when I first started hunting public land (when I was 13years old) he always hunted long bow and recurve mostly, he was out there every day almost. He was such a good hunter the majority of other hunters nicknamed him “the mayor” always getting nice size bucks during rut or late season. And always ground hunted! Once my uncle passed away I was 20 years old I had no one else to take me hunting but myself. Needless to say this man took me under his wing taught me more about archery hunting, when I got my first mature buck he was there to help me drag it out showed me how to properly field dress, etc that was the first time he ever reached out and shook my hand to congratulate me on a nice buck. That meant a lot to me even till this day. Unfortunately he moved state just last year, I do still hunt the same grounds we hunted together the spots he showed me he use to hunt back in the day the stories he use to tell me. Oh and I’ll never forget the time I was 16 years old I was walking out of the woods and this big bush I walked past reaches out and grabs my leg i about had a heart attack lol yep it was him those memories I’ll always keep and I got my son now that hunts with me to pass down the stories and what I know now. We still keep in touch till this day by phone his name is Tom and is one of my best friends. I miss talking to him out in the parking lot before going in for the hunts and afterwards just to share our stories of how our hunt went.

    Lots of These Locator grip bows are also used on True flatbow type longbows and I prefer them due to my small hand size. They are currently on my lesser bow, a 8200 Actionbow by Actionrod made from 1961 to 1979 as the same model though it is less deep and the grip style one needs is that one can use the Flat grip on most locator models that are not made deep in the pocket. I do this with my lesser bow and It seems to work. I just need better arrows for that bow since it is a lightweight bow. I do this Hill style grip as the bow is all Fiberglass including a stiff fiberglass handle with fixed grip on it so the vibration is going to be higher. Then I do the with my one piece 54 inch recurve and a more modern handle, a grip like you used when shooting the locator grip bow since I hate using the Finger slings or using the all but thumb and finger grip.

    A good bit of the info to shoot a flat grip flatbow longbow is in the book Howard Hilld Method of Shooting a bow and arrow by Jerry Hill with bits from Howard Hills book Hunting the Hard Way.
    The reason this is in the book is that when Howard Hill started hunting with a bow in 1920's only the flatbow longbow styles and English longbows were really used by people of European decent with maybe a few of the B shaped flatbow longbow design being used as well with only the flat or in some cases a locator handle/hand notch handle for a better placement on the longbows. Maybe there was a bulge style as well where the front bulged like the back of the locator handles but was not very popular in the 1920's when Howard Hill first really got into archery with both target and hunting. So, this is what Howard Hill got used to shooting and he kept shooting these bows even when reflex deflex and early static tip recurves started to become popular in the late 1940's and into the 1950's, rather than learn a new bow style.
    The flat handle style can be used modified on recurve/reflex deflex and some contoured handle compounds, nearly the same as flat handle longbow for all bows that do not have a target/small contour grip too small for even an average kid 10 on up to grip with full hand or for some not too skinny on a straight compound grip. Good News is that one can fix the too skinny of compound grip as most brands have some grip you can get or there are for some, aftermarket grips to make the bow wider to grip to be wider the way one has to grip most straight style of bow handles like straight and locator handle/hand notch handle need to be gripped to avoid the hand shock.

    Mate this has been helpful for me. Just got my first ASL and was experimenting with different grips and this is exactly what works. If I shoot it like my r/d longbow on the thumb pad side of my lifeline, my shots are inconsistent and low. Soon as I grab it like you say I consistently put my arrows on the spot and the bow becomes super forgiving of other errors, and like you say it shoots nicer when held that way too. Keep doing what your doing mate, love your vids!

    Jason, just to let you know, this video is behaving weird in RUclips. It doesn't show up in my subscription feed, it doesn't appear to have many views, it doesn't show up in your channel, but I stumbled on it doing a random traditional bowhunting search on RUclips. If unlisted it is showing up in public searches.
    EDIT-I think I found it in one of your playlists, not in a random search.

    This is a great video! I don’t think I’ve seen anyone explain the difference in how to grip a Hill style bow versus a longbow with a recess in the handle. I shoot all my bows with a finger sling and will have to look at how I shoot my Farmington Black Horn, I don’t think I am changing my wrist angle, the finger sling allows all the shock to reverberate in the bow while not transferring any into your hand so it allows me to get away with gripping all my bows the same way. However I never thought about it nor looked closely at how I hold the bow. Thanks for this very informative vid!

    Hi Jason. Great video.
    I've found that I can shoot my Hill-style bow with a locator grip in the same way that you shoot your Hill-style bow with the straight grip. I use the top of the locator grip to make sure my hand is always in the same place when I grab the bow but I have even pressure all the way down my hand with a very low wrist. I can't shoot it like I shoot my recurves as my arm gets jolted and I usually whack my arm with the string.

    I find that a lot of people quit way too early when trying to shoot a Hill style bow, or just look at the grip and say 'no'. This is actually very similar to how a lot of asiatic bows are gripped i.e. full grip with slight pressure in the fingers. They don't give it a fair chance

    Lol I always love the people who think there is only one way to shoot a bow. I'm a historical archer and there always seems to be someone with a modern bow trying to "educate" me when I'm at the range. They're usually polite enough, but when I'm trying to shoot my asiatic bows with a thumb draw, or native american bow that only draws 18 inches, it does amuse me. I'd blow up my short bows trying to shoot how they're telling me to, and shooting Turkish without khatra is a waste of your time.

    I'm a hobbyist target archer who shoots a 47# @28 (my draw is about 30) Hill-style longbow. I've been shooting that style for about 3 years, with both the 47# and my last bow, which was rated 40# @28. I've found that if I hold the bow with a full "hammer style" grip I tend to get a lot of string slap - I've raised the brace height up to 6 3/4 inches, which has helped, but the only thing I've found that really keeps the string off my forearm is angling my hand like you would on a bow with a locator grip. This definitely isn't how the grip is meant to be used, and feels uncomfortable in the hand when I shoot like that. I think that either my brace height is still a little low or that I'm not angling my arm enough - I was wondering what brace height you usually set your longbows for?

    • @SamkoTradBow
      @SamkoTradBow  2 года назад

      Many hill bow shooters shoot with a bent elbow so that string slap doesn't happen. The bent elbow also means they are always pushing the bow forward to the target. I don't shoot with a bent elbow personally, but most do. I brace my bows at 7 inches. When brace drops to 6 3/4 I start hitting my arm slightly.
