    Absolutely correct! I've only been shooting an asl with straight grip less than a year. But it all came together when I went with that exact grip. Good definition!

    Thank you so much for this explanation! I have recently picked up a longbow and while it does have a slightly rounded grip, not as flat as the one you show, it is much flatter than the grips on the recurves. When holding it like my recurve it caused the string to hit my arm a lot. Altering my grip solved the problem instantaneously!

    Good video and explanation of something that seems so basic. I primarily shoot barebow recurve and when I shoot my stickbow I need some 'break-in' time to get the feel of the straight grip. I enjoy shooting both but there is a difference.

    Exactly the way I do it. Allow the resistance of the bow to set your handle in the hand. I hold it pretty loose till the handle finds its place then grip it

    did or do you grip the Baraga bow from Northern Mist the same way as you do the straight grip?

    • @SamkoTradBow
      @SamkoTradBow  Год назад +3

      No. The Baraga I shot with a loose almost recurve like grip. Where as the straight grip I hold tighter with more pressure thru the whole hand

    Jason, do you bare shaft tune your longbows? Also can you do a video how you you change the grips on your Northern Mists with rubber grips? Thanks

    • @SamkoTradBow
      @SamkoTradBow  2 года назад

      I do bare shaft tune my bows. I then verify them through paper as well.
      The rubber tube grip is quick and easy to put on. Slide it until it stops. Then roll it and it will roll over itself and go right up to the shelf. Then unroll it.

    Mate is it the same with the locator grip handle , you hold it the same ? You have a lot of great content cheers !

      With a locator you definitely want to grip into the locators the same way each time.

      I do grip them about the same with a full grip just griping into the pocket. Both my longbows I have well one is more an American Style Shortbow/ASS at 52 inches but both these bows have a locator grip, the grip type I like the best as I can with my smaller hands use the bow with a full grip style unlike most straight grip longbows with the other bonus I can get into the locator grip for an east to repeat style of grip.

      @@caseysmith544 thanks for your comment , i actually changed my locator grip over to straight using car panel filler and a file then a 3rivers rubber sleeve ! Being a 3 finger under shooter i have discovered shooting a howard hill style longbow i'm hopeless until i tried split finger, works great !

    Thank you for the video. I have been shooting a recurve for over 10 years, and I have just got a Baraga with a locator grip. Should I hold it in the same way as a straight grip?

    • @SamkoTradBow
      @SamkoTradBow  5 лет назад

      I shoot my baragas the same. With the locator grip of the baraga your hand will naturally fall into the locator and around the palm swell. Works great for me.

      @@SamkoTradBow Thank you for your kind answer. I have been exercising with it and could not prevent the bow from twisting in my hand when drawing it. Next time I will try your suggestions, fingers crossed!

    Hey Jason, What quiver is that? Do you always hunt with a bow quiver?

    • @SamkoTradBow
      @SamkoTradBow  3 года назад

      Great northern quiver. Love it. Been using these quivers for over 20 years. Yes I always have a quiver on my bows. I find it easier and fast for a 2nd shot if I miss etc.

    How do you keep the string from. Destroying your forearm and or wrist? With that kind of grip i can only do that if I face my target head on squared shoulders and my arm straight out as if I'm reaching g straight out in front of me with my shoulders parallel to the target. I can't figure that out. Anything short of that and within two or three arrows my forearm and wrist look like hamburger meat. Explain that , please it looks like your string follows straight through your forearm for most of its travel. Maybe the camera is deceiving me, like I said I don't see how that can work.
    PLEASE MAKE A VIDEO THAT SHOWS HOW THE ARM LINES UP, HOW THE GRIP LOOKS, AND HOW THE STRING TRAVELS, FROM MULTIPLE ANGLES SO WE CAN SEE HOW THINGS LINE UP. NOBODY has done that to my knowledge.

    • @SamkoTradBow
      @SamkoTradBow  3 года назад

      Usually when you are hitting your arm that bad its from torque in your wrist turning the bow string into your arm. Or you brace height is too low on you bow will cause it to. Also make sure you are rolling you fore arm out wards.

      I’m making the switch to Asl, I understand what you are saying, this man is right for this type of bow. This is why arm must be bent a little and waist bent a little it’s another animal. The straight limb bow will rattle your teeth unless you shoot like this guy. I am currently shooting a reflex deflex long bow and have a Clay Hays type style. I’m old school grip it and rip it, and just change from that. So to Shoot a ASL long bow I’m going to have to shoot the way the bow wants me to. Anyway, I understand your question.
