Yankee Flipper vs Persistent Squirrel

  • Today, I sat down for breakfast and I noticed a squirrel getting ready to climb on our bird feeder. This is not ordinary bird feeder. It is a Yankee Flipper that is designed to be squirrel proof. The squirrel climbed down and was promptly thrown off. Then the squirrel tried it again and somehow the feeder stopped spinning briefly and the squirrel got some food and then it was thrown off again. When it was climbing down for its third time, I got my camera and started recording the following in progress. The feeder was spinning so violently, that it was throwing seed sunflower kernels on the ground where the other squirrel was getting a good meal. Most of the noise in the background is the British Open, some of it is me.

Didja notice? The squirrel figures out how to stop the spin at about 4:15, but only for as long as he can hold on. He lasts about a minute and a half, but right as the TV commercial says "Perseverance, never give up . . ." -- he loses it and starts spinning again.

So much for a "Squirrel Proof Feeder". First pest takes a ride on the carnival ride, offsetting the center of gravity so bad it slings food all over the ground for pest #2 to have a feast.Pest #1 then jams a foot into a feed hole, jamming the motor and stuffs himself with seed. Thanks for posting this video to help me make up my mind to wave off this feeder.

I always LOL watching squirrels on these feeders. Never had a feeder like this, but I heard the squirrel will spin forever until the batteries run out on feeder? Then squirrel gets easy meal. Lots of bite marks on feeder when that happens! A lot of seeds spill out. It's mostly fun to watch the squirrel spinning around. Great for laughs, so long as the battery stays alive. I wonder what's the record for "squirrel spinning" until the battery dies?

Smart bugger, the sooner the battery's wound down, the sooner he can get some feed. The motor needs to be a bit slower. The goal is to prevent the squirrel from grabbing any seed. Set it slow enough not to run down the battery quickly, and fast enough to keep the seed out of reach.
