You are a wonderful teacher..I have a long way to go..My bud gave me a fender that needed lots of love .I got her back together in good working order..I love it.She sounds great to me..Thanks for all your help..Scott
Been playing guitar for about 10 years now and just bought my first bass. This lesson was perfect for me. Thanks James! I hope this is just the beginning to being able to round out my playing abilities.
@@ebassguitar It's a joke. I myself am the biggest challenge. I just find memorizing the fretboard quite the challenge. Probably due to lack of experience. ;) That's probably why I love the Nashville number system so fantastic. On bass guitar it let's you 'feel' your way around the fretboard without knowing many notes. Love your channel, btw!
I was taught the neck by playing the circle of 4ths (C F Bb Eb Ab Db Gb B E A D G) on one string saying the notes out loud as i play then when I got that down I stated playing The major scale starting on each note of the circle of 4ths. Then moved down one string and repeated etc etc
Very good tutorial. Hardest for me are the beats to suit a song. shapes are easy for bass but how to play the beats related to songs need many practices. I suggest many more songs and bass rifts to master bass. TQ
I've just started playing bass after a couple of years of electric lead and rhythm playing, and didn't know the layout of the fretboard on a bass. I can see that it's the same in terms of root, 3rd, 5th and octave shapes. This has helped me get to grips with playing bass lines effortlessly, so thank you for the lesson, and making me realise how easy it is!
I have no idea how a fret board works in the first place. Like i understand g d a e snares , but when it comes to notes and such and where to place my fingers for certain notes and sounds im so lost

James: What's your biggest challenge learning the fretboard?
Me: Yes.
What is it about ‘me’ that is challenging!

Two prog classics that are (at least at the start) octave based are Careful with that Axe, Eugene by Pink Floyd and Starless by King Crimson
Awesome! Thanks for sharing that! Cheers!
The bass interlude in Metallica's Orion is another great example of root+5th+octave
And a lot of Nothing Else Matters.
Ah yes! Thanks for sharing that! Cheers!
@@ebassguitar and Die Krupps Tribute To Metallica did it even better, great lesson, thanks
You said Ska! Pick it up pick it up pick it up!

And for a box, albeit used in a slightly different way, Deep Purple's Black Night
Awesome! Thanks for sharing that!
Biggest fretboard challenge?
I can't find my frets, it's all sort of smooth, are my frets broken or something?
Possibly it's a fretless board.
Good lesson for beginners..
Glad you like it! Cheers!
