While I’m talking about zionism I’d like to mention the book “the ethnic cleansing of palestine” by Ilan Pappe. Amazing book.

My girlfriend never went to a Jewish school, but she seriously considered moving to Israel while she was on birthright. She eventually decided against it when she got back to the US and realized how manipulative it was to offer young adults a free vacation in the hope that they: 1. Separate themselves from their families by moving to Israel/convince their families to relocate 2. Get married and make Jewish babies who will be legally required to serve in the military. 3. Adopt a pro Israel stance by associating the state with a positive experience.
I mean as someone who has been on birthright myself, they never outright pushed me to move there. The most of a push I ever got from anyone on that trip was an old cashier in a little store in the markets of Tel Aviv, when I told her I was just visiting and she said "you should bring your family here, come home". The idea of a Jewish homeland for such a historically marginalized group of a people is very powerful, and I caution against dismissing these very human feelings when assuming the motiviations of the people who run birthright. It's easy to see it through a jaded lens, but to me birthright was more about connecting to my heritage than being indoctrinated into some political stance. That said, the Jewish high school i attended literally taught a class on how to defend Israel in public debates lmfaooooo. Indoctrination is certainly real, I agree, but Birthright is such a large program that delivers an experience too intimately shaped by volunteer chaparones and third party tour guides for me to confidently agree that it is absolutely done with the intention of turning people into zionists.
@megantron5331 I had a very different, almost opposite, experience. I went to Israel in ‘82 - before the intifadas or the long war in Lebanon. It was part of a work/study program. I lived there for ‘free’ but I studied and did field or factory work on a kibbutz (communal farm) for nearly 6 months. It was a positive experience and I did not feel pressured to think or do anything. At the end of my stay I felt ready to move there permanently. The program manager, whose job in part was to recruit new immigrants, said "you’re a good kid, just 20 years old, with good opportunities back in the US. Why don’t you return home for a few years, get a university education, then come back here and see if it’s what you really want to do, so there’ll be no regrets." I changed dramatically in the following years, as did the country and the region. But I truly appreciate the program manager’s wise advice and have positive memories of my time there.

As an anarchist, Jewish-Israeli journalist who served as a medic in the 2014 war, I gotta say your takes are some of the most accurate I've seen on this platform. I do think you might have some gaps in your knowledge regarding more recent internal Israeli politics (its weird to talk about Israel's reputation change or about Israel's far right without bringing up figures like netanyahu, his insane son, itamar Ben gvir, yigal amir and meir kahane at least), and you may need a bit more perspective on the 2014 war as well. Seth wasn't necessarily as wrong as you'd believe back then. There's tons of proof of human shields in gaza both before and during the 2014 war.
