Hi everybody and welcome to simply scuba, in this episode we’re going to take a deep dive into snorkels. Your snorkel is one of your diving tools that most divers start out with but gets left in their kit bag more and more because, well you have your regulators to breathe and a snorkel has a pretty limited depth compared to a regulator so why bother right?
Well, your snorkel is a very useful piece of kit in certain situations and they’re not as simple as many people think, there’s a lot that goes into designing and making a snorkel. So, let’s take a look at snorkels.

As an underwater rugby player I like to use the most basic snorkel with the biggests possible crosssection. I cut a section of the top of the snorkel off to shorten it for less breathing resistance and so that there is less material sticking above my head, so that other players don't hit the snorkel out of my mouth wenn they swimm close to me. The simple mouthpiece is also the best because of the small profile so it doesn't get hit out of my mouth that easyly. Sadly I, like many other players go to quiete a few mouthpieces cause we bite to hard on them.

Thanks for the content guys! Any chance you could do a video about what conditions will make for good dives; wind, tides, weather etc. thanks you for the top tier vids

I didnt know how you were going to make a 20 min video on snorkels but you pulled it off.... Is the simple things you break down i often find most interesting. things we tend to look past. There is a lot more here then most of us think about.

What are the pros and cons of having a custom dry suit vs shelf sized? Also I’m diving a scubapro seahawk the bcd is waaay too big for ,e it’s a large and I’m a very skinny 6ft male so it’s pretty loose in the chest and waist I wanna move to a steel backplate wing setup any decent budget suggestions? Around 800usd

We use Aqualung BCD’s with i3 inflation. I have a (pink) Lotus but there are many colours available. It’s a lot easier to work with then manual inflation. For example the Aqualung axiom i3 BCD.

I have the Dry snorkel, with a "purge valve" (one-way) & two-parter clip (also slides up & town the snorkel tube, & can angle), similar mouthpiece design to regulator, semi-flexible curve section to bounce away when not in use. Cannot go back to common basic retail snorkels after such convenience / usability, LOL

Not so much with snorkels but holding and pointing to your topics would be really helpful instead of describing what you're talking about. And thanks.

Physical examples or pictures would really help this type of gear video.

Who brings a snorkel diving after the owd course?

Can't say I've taken one with me for a long time. Having an extra thing dangling around your face during the dive is just an annoyance I can live without. If I do take a snorkel with me, it pretty much gets detached and put into a pocket before water entry or before descending.

I keep a collapsible one in my pocket. It rarely gets used, but it's nice to have when I need/want it for some reason, like a long surface swim with good snorkeling opportunities along the way or, as mentioned in the video, as a rescue breathing tool.
