DD XL Tarp Tent with Floor Cover Tutorial

- I’ve worked out a way to turn a DD XL Tarp into a tent that has a ground sheet floor. All you need is a DD XL Tarp, 7 tent pegs, 3 guy ropes and a walking pole/branch. The way that this is constructed allows for a dry entry into the tent and for addition wind protection by rolling your rucksack up with the extra material.

I like the idea of always having a small or standard tennis ball with one hole in it to cap the ends of your poles. This would prevent any damage to the tarp & spread the point load where it makes contact.
Great tip!
I’m anxious to try this with my 4m X 4m DD tarp! I see no reason why a square tarp shouldn’t work as well. Thanks for this video. I know how to make a floored tent from a tarp but the way I’ve seen everyone do it requires the door to be attached at the top to a high tree limb or to use tall pole at the doorway and it seems to me that your design is much more wind tolerant. I’m also thinking of using a small ground tarp to droop over the front opening so that it hangs like a flap on a doghouse where you could stake down the bottom of the hanging “door” once you get inside to keep wind and rain from blowing into the enclosure.
That was a good demo Paul.
I really like the look of the configuration. Very pleasing aesthetically.
I will try that with my XL DD.
Thanks for sharing.
Be well my friend.

Wow.... i was just about to purchase for a 4x4 tarp because the differents setups Ive seen werent bigger enought for 2... but with this.... and also with floor... amazing man...
Not the best way to set this tarp tent up because if there is any kind of strong wind it will greatly hinder the interior space. Setting this up with the ridge line down the middle before you fold it makes a huge amount of difference and frees up an extra loop that you can utilise at the rear to place an extra pole and tie out for more living space. Great video though and if it was a wet summers day with little to no wind this would be an excellent set up to enjoy the night. Thanks for the upload and share I really enjoyed it 👍
Thank s for the video. It´s great, I never thought it would be possible to create a tent so easily :)
You're very welcome, Mark, thank you for taking the time to comment :-)
Thanks for the video Paul, I was on the fence between a 3x3m and an XL tarp from DD Hammocks because I knew the 3x3 would do a tarptent configuration but the extra size of the XL was appealing. As you said your self theory is one thing but doing it is another - thanks to your video I now know you can create a similar tarptent configuration from an XL. I would suggest looking at a guy called chainlink courier who has done some nice mods for his 3x3 tarptent including a nifty idea for re-purposing an IPK sheet for the door. Keep up the videos and the bushcrafting :-)
Thanks for the kind words, glad that I could be of assistance and I will take a look at the chainlink courier :-)
Very nice. Probably can do the same thing with the pyramid setup and be more waterproofed for the inside.
Nice video. Is this setup advisable for windy conditions?
Paul I just watched this again. It's given me an idea, same.design as yours but I am thinking of a way I could add a mosquito net. Would you happen to know if you would get condensation on the roof of the tarp. TYVM. ATB.Reeco

Thank you Reeco, glad you enjoyed the configuration :-)
Thanks, that's very nice of you
You're very welcome :-)
Great work. Thanks for sharing
Very good. Love it. Thank you for sharing...mike T.
Hi Paul,
Great video. Just wondering, what height should the hiking pole be set at?
125 is a great place to start my friend 👍
I've got the 4×4 this would work just as well with that size yes?nice job btw
As this is a 3 x 4.5 rectangular tarp I'm not sure if it would work with a square tarp, it may do depending on the tie out points, you may end up with a lot of 'ground sheet' too.
Did using the 4x4 work?
it is very good. BUT why not just use a tent?
Because the majority of tents are "pre molded" sewn together, which by that design makes it bulkier to carry, and if not carried properly, succeptable to damage. In the end it comes down to personal needs, uses, and preference
Will there be enough room for three persons in this tarp tent?
BRILLIANT!!!!!
Thank you Marianna, really glad you like it so much. Do you have a DD XL Tarp?
No we haven't, BUT we are looking into purchasing something small/light weight/multy-functional for my husband when he goes on his solo wild camping trips. They have sales on camping products everywhere now, so any additional information or tutorials are much appretiated as we haven't go much experience with anything else than ordinary tents.
Marianna Havlitus I really like the XL DD Tarp, it gives a lot of versatility because of the attachment points. If I have time I'd be happy to make some more video tutorials, providing it's on things I can actually do ;-) Do you have anything in p[articular that you would like a tutorial on?
Paul Brook When we go wild camping as family we simply pack up the car and go. BUT when Pete goes by himself he only takes what he can carry as he walk long distances. Any advice/tutorials on space and weight saving products would be fantastic. Reliable but lightweight shelter is something we are looking into right now. If I think of something specific, will be in touch. ;-)
Very useful thanks
Good video, tks 😀👍
Hi what kind of height is the pole set to approximately
Put the pole in place then raise it until under tension. Height will probably change each time you set it up. once set up is complete you can adjust as necessary.
thanks for the info
+salrussano1 Very welcome, thank you for taking the time to comment :-)
+Paul Brook great video. is it possible for you to make a video showing the same configuration, but with the flaps (doors) closed in order to show possible ways to protect from wind or rain?
With this configuration there is not closing door unfortunately. However I do have another configuration with a door - www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwj--rOGg-jLAhXB1hQKHSxoBeIQtwIIHDAA&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3Dh7eQPa5bUhQ&usg=AFQjCNFwWNFmuBzRvjtvxn6rGrJZ76uGjQ&sig2=zk5JkH8L-WKnwxzjejbLpg&bvm=bv.117868183,d.ZWU
Skipped over pegging the back/middle of the tarp I think
10*
Cheers, John, it's a very efficient set-up especially int he winter when the floor is wet/muddy.
What are dimensions of the tarp?
+Djordje Mikic It's 3m x 4.5m - check it out here - amzn.to/1GrUM8p
I missed you pegging down the back____or did I?
I think that is a different video.
They're no grommets in the back unless he but one there. the two grommets at each side pulled tight in back of tent if you fallow the opening he said 7 tent stakes. 3 on the right & 3 on the left & 1 in front. I've seen a lot of one tarpaulin tents on RUclips. This one's the best of them all.
When the rear of the sheet is pulled over to the front, peg down the tapes located one at each side which is now the rear. Make sure that the rear is tensioned...
Rules out like 90% of people
Like yr tarp but u don't explain set up very well, so done and explain better if u want subscription
I thought I explained it well enough. Lots of subscribers seems to have made this set up, but if I can be clearer I would be happy to improve myself. What did you think I could be clearer on?
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
